The CW sitcom Reba, starring country-singing star Reba McEntire, is currently in its sixth season — though barely. The show was reportedly going to be cancelled last Spring but was saved at the 11th hour because the network didn’t want to pay a “kill fee” for not following through on a previous agreement.
Because of this, the popular sitcom was picked up for its sixth season but for just 13 episodes. Basically, the network feels that the show doesn’t fit their “desired demographic.” As a result, the new episodes of Reba didn’t debut until other CW shows had failed. When Reba finally did start it’s sixth season on November 19, 2006, it gave the network some great numbers. The sitcom even helped to boost the viewership of Seventh Heaven.
Ever since then, fans of Reba have been hopeful that the CW would realize the value of the show and order nine additional episodes (to complete the season) and to renew the series for a seventh year. It now looks like that’s not going to happen.
At last week’s Television Critics Association tour in Pasadena, CW President Dawn Ostroff reportedly declined to comment on Reba’s future. Later, it was quietly stated that the sitcom was done. Today, sources at TV Guide and MediaWeek are confirming that Reba has indeed been cancelled. There are four episodes left to air and word is that the CW will air the final two together on Sunday, February 18th.
Will there be some acknowledgment of the series ending? Hard to say. These episodes were shot in December when the cast and crew were unsure of the show’s future. Still, based on the experiences of 2006, I’m sure they may have considered they weren’t coming back.
There are lots of Reba fans out there so understandably there are tons of rumors floating around. One source at the CW reportedly said that the CW will indeed order the nine additional episodes soon (very doubtful now). There has also been talk that Lifetime (the cable channel that airs Reba reruns) has expressed interest in airing a Reba spin-off series. The spin-off would supposedly feature young married couple Van & Cheyenne moving into their own house and raising their new baby together. The rest of the Reba cast would appear as guest stars from time to time (and as a presumably smaller show budget would allow).
Is there still a possibility that Reba could be saved? Very doubtful but, like title character Reba Hart, this show is a fighter so you never know. Whatever happens, you can be rest assured, we’ll keep you posted. Stay tuned!
UPDATE: If there were any doubts, on January 26th, CW officially announced that Reba would end on February 18th.
I think maybe ABC Family or the Hallmark channel should pick of the show if the CW is going to be stupid and cancel the best show that it or the WB has EVER had (excluding Dawson’s Creek and Charmed). I think all lovers of this show should start an online petition and send it to the EXECS at CW. See what happens!
Why in the world are you cancelling. It is the only show I really love to watch because it’s the best, funniest show on. Please keep it on…
CANCELLING REBA???? WHAT?? That was one of the best shows on tv.. the rating had to be off the chart…funny every week…great family show…NO VIOLENCE..NO SEX….NO KILLING…and hillarious for all ages..PLEASE DON’T CANCEL IT…i looked forward to friday nights for reba to come on…SOMEBODY HELP!!(

Please don’t cancel Reba. It is my favorite show. It is one of the few comedys that is left and there is no violence or swearing, which mades it a good family show. I enjoy sitting down and watching Reba because it makes me laugh and helps me to relax after a long day at work. Please don’t cancel Reba.
Reba is one of the best shows
on the air.
It brings laughter & joy to our lives. It’s truly a joy to watch & let’s us enjoy a little bit of happiness for a magical 1/2 hour. Bring back Reba.
my whole family set down together to watch this funny, show. we would hate to see it cancelled.its the best show ever.
please save reba
I loved Reba when it was on the WB, and I never would watch CW’s network programming until they did bring back Reba. I hate the fact that CW abused the show, and refused to extend its run for nine more episodes. Miss Ostroff, I really don’t think you’d know what type of a gem in Reba that you were giving up, and it’d serve you right if your network crumbles after a stupid decision like this!
I just found out today that the show was cancelled…this breaks my heart. Reba is such a great show! If there is any way to revive it, please do!!
My wife and I just started watching the show and we can’t stop.We love this show. Thanks Connie and Keith in Eureka Ca.
7th Heaven and Reba are the only two shows worth watching on the CW network. 7th Heaven is getting old and needs to wrap it up but there is a lot more Reba can do. I guess it won’t be long before I don’t even need to tune to the CW network to see whats on because I will know that there would not be anything worth watching. Whoever is in ccharge of the CW network is a moron!
Please dont cancel Reba, its the one show that doesnt have violence sex and bad words, for my children. It is a good family show that we dont have much of anymore. We watch reruns as well as all the new ones and look forward each week to see them. DONT CANCEL REBA PLEASE!!!!
CW Network has cancelled Reba, the best tv series I have watched in ages. I love every actor on the show and I will never watch anything on CW Network again and I highly suggest that you keep this in mind!!!
Please don’t cancel Reba. This is the only show my entire family can enjoy. We love this show. We love Reba!
