Executive producer Jan Nash says she, the cast, and crew found out Rizzoli & Isles would be cancelled after its seventh season, when TNT‘s Kevin Reilly announced it during the TCA winter press tour. That said, the creative team was braced for the cancellation.
Nash tells TV Guide when the network only ordered 13 episodes of the seventh season, they started to catch on. This gave the writers time to plan for a Rizzoli & Isles seventh season finale that could serve as a TV series finale.
“We certainly had an inkling when they ordered 13 [episodes] rather than the usual 16 or 18,” Nash tells TVGuide.com. “We figured that might be the way this would play out. We designed Season 7 so that it could act as a series finale or just B story lines that we pull back on at the end to have them continue on. But I think with where we left off and what we already had planned work in our favor [going into the final season].”
The current season six arc will wrap up in the second episode of season seven. After that, Nash and crew will set their sights on the Rizzoli & Isles TV series finale. Here’s more from TV Guide:
We do have an idea of what we’re aimed at,” she says of the series finale. “The best idea wins, so if somebody has a better idea, then that’s what we’ll do. We have our 100th episode in the middle of the season, so we want to do a big, flashy 100th episode. There are a lot of opportunities to do fun things this year.”
“Fun” is the operative word for Season 7, as the cast and crew hope to end the show on a high note for their loyal fans. “I haven’t been here as long as some other people,” Nash, who joined in Season 5, says. “This is a very close-knit group. I think there’s a lot of gratitude for having been on such a long-running, successful show. I think we really just want to go out having a wonderful experience doing the work we love so much but also trying to make something the large and loyal audience of this show will enjoy. That has been our mantra. It’s hard to say goodbye. I’ve been on shows that have had long runs and it’s hard to come to [the] end of something, but it is certainly much more satisfying to be able to do it in a way where you can plan and feel like you got to service the characters properly.”
Are you a fan of TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles TV show? Do you think that seven seasons is sufficient, or should TNT have renewed it for an eighth season. Sound off, in the comments.
Please, please, please don’t cancel Rizzoli & Isles.
It is disappointing to hear the executives have decided to cancel a quality show. There are fewer and fewer good shows on TV. It seems if it doesn’t have supernatural, demonic or other current fads it is tossed out. Soon there won’t be anything worth watching. If the execs read these I hope they reconsider their decision for their viewers sake. Thanks to the entire cast and crew for the years of enjoyable viewing
Are you CRAZY?? I love this show!! it’s just the right combination of action & humor!! I may just be done with TNT!!
All I have to say is someone at TNT has lost their mind. This is a wonderful series. I will not watch this network again after the series ends. I no longer watch A&E after they cancelled Longmire.
I think you need to renew at& I I am older and enjoy the show along w MajorCrimes. You have a good thing please reconsider and don’t take it off the air
Why do the good shows get cancelled for no reason and the bad ones stick around forever??
Why do the food shoes get cancelled for no reason and the bad ones seems to stick around??
I loved this show so so much. I have been waiting for it to come back on. I am so so upset. What is wrong with you people. It’s nice having a show that is just normal and 2 best friends just being friends without the whole gay thing in there. I LOVED IT. Please reconsider….
I am so upset! It is a great show! My favorite! Not many shows with 2 women stars who have great chemistry! I hope they change their mind and bring it back or maybe another channel will pick it up! Get rid of some reality shows and keep the good shows!
I’m horrified that Rizzoli & Isles is slated to end. I am so sick of reality shows and that is just about all that is on TV. This show is so great. Great interaction between all the actors, great story line, great acting! I love this show and can’t believe it’s going to be canceled. If there is anyone out there that has some “pull” to keep Rizzoli & Isles from cancelling, please make it happen (keep it going). I don’t get enough of this show. Keep it alive!
After last nights return and how still distant Jane and Maura are, in that they didn’t even hug after Maura’s safe return, think about that for a second, best friends, your best friend gets kidnapped because of you and there isn’t even a hug once found, and Jane doesn’t even go tho the hospital with her in the ambulance. Very poor writing, I don’t think the executive producer who took over in season 5 knows how to make this show work and so I guess it is better that TNT pull the plug as they are, it barely resembles what… Read more »
I cannot believe that they are canceling this show, i’s a great show…Very different from all the cops show…I’m sad
Great show, not sure why they would want to cancel it
I will miss this show one of my favorites so bummed it got canceled I can name a bunch more shows that need to be canceled
I agree with Julie…. there are a lot of shows that REALLY deserve to be canceled, but not RIZZOLI & ISLES. Somehow the producers of shows these days don’t want to listen to the audiences, they just pick the best to cancel & leave some of the worst (2 Broke Girls for one) on tv for us to flip past.
Get a clue.
Greatly enjoy the show and will miss it, especially Angie Harmon, who keeps me coming back to watch show each episode.
