Fans of ABC’s summer drama, Scoundrels, may have noticed that the series isn’t on the schedule any longer. Has the show been cancelled?
Scoundrels revolves around the West family, a clan that’s had many run-ins with the law. Dad (David James Elliott) has been sent to prison and his wife (Virginia Madsen) is determined that she and their kids not follow him. The TV show’s cast also includes Leven Rambin, Vanessa Marano, Carlos Bernard, and Patrick Flueger (in a dual role).
The series debuted on June 20th to a disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.23 million viewers. In week two, viewership dropped to a 1.0 in the demo and 3.66 million viewers. The numbers got even worse in subsequent weeks. It hit a demo low 0.6 and, the finale attracted the fewest number of total viewers, just 2.73 million. Those are some terrible numbers for a major network, even for the summer months.
Only eight episodes of Scoundrels were produced and, to ABC’s credit, they aired them all — despite the low ratings. Unfortunately, the network has little reason to want any more. So, no, ABC has not officially cancelled Scoundrels but, it is highly unlikely that they’ll order a second season.
What do you think? Why do you think Scoundrels didn’t fare better? Is it a better show than the ratings reflect?

I loved it! I know it wasn’t a masterpiece but I still found it entertaining.
Virginia Madsen has been working in movies since she was a kid (Ck out “Class”, 1983, with Rob Lowe, Andy McCarthy and John Cusack) and Carlos Bernard the detective played “Tony” for few seasons in “24.”
I loved it and was hooked right away and was telling everyone about it. Summer killed the ratings but know it would do better during the fall winter.
Yes, there is plenty of the unbelievable in both Scoundrels & The Gates…..but very entertaining and kept us coming back for more – they will be missed…..come on – give us a break – pahleze renew!
The time frame was a disaster but the concept was great. I am sorry it didn’t get a better opportunity to blossom. I loved it and think Tthe Gates is a sorry excuse for anything! What’s with this vampire junk anyway??? Too phony!!
I want scoundrels back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i watch it every SundaY ON aBC
ABSOLUTELY love the Scoudrels and hope ABC renews. Miss it already!!!!
And, don’t be dissing The Gates – best new series on T.V.
The Scoundrels show is canceled and The Gates is next ~~ Love Mom
My husband and I love this show!!! Started getting really into the plot lines and then it was gone. I hope they order a second season!
Love, love, love The Scoundrels. Took an episode or two to really fall in love with the characters and storyline but it happened. BRING IT BACK, PLEASE! I loved watching on a Sunday night but would be willing to watch it any other night also. Great storyline, great show.
I loved the show and I’m very disappointed to hear it is not coming back!
Don`t understand where you get those ratings. You must be asking the wrong people. My Husband and I watched it every week and loved it. Upset that network let us watch and did not give us a proper ending. Will think twice before getting hooked on another series on ABC.
There’s a reason for the low ratings which got worse in subsequent episodes: the plot was boring and the acting was mediocre at best. David Elliott and Virginia Madsen had no chemistry. The premise was implausible – small-time crooks living in Palm Springs and when they “go straight” they get jobs working in the supermarket at minimum wage? Like that will pay the bills. Wolf spent more time on the phone in jail, and he got a pass, with a police escort no less, to a funeral and his daughter used her wiles to distract the officer FOR A WHOLE… Read more »
I loved the show…a good escape semi-drama, mixed in with lots of comedy.
Hallelujah!!! Someone with a BRAIN on this comment board…I was beginning to feel lonely…awful writing, awful storylines, awful show. Thank you! 🙂
I would have to agree with you. Although I did watch it every week, but hey, what else was on Sunday night? Some of the actions in the series where just beyond far-fetched… Bringing a laptop to a prison visitation room? Hopefully something good will fill the slot, but who knows with ABC.
We really didn’t have a chance to get to know the actors/characters personalities. The only actor I had heard of before was Virginia Madsen and I don’t even know from where. You should give the “unknowns” a little more chance to flesh out their parts. I think they all show much potential. Never realized that one actor played two parts. He’s good if it’s who I think it is. One more season??
I love the show. I think it would have faired better if it wasn’t on at the same time as True Blood on HBO. I watched it on-line since I am a True Blood fan.
I watch tv al the time andI loved Scoundrels which is how I happened upon this blog. Let’s hope it helps1
