Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
HUGE mistake by Fox. This was a great show. It has it all, mystery, diversity, comedy. I truly hope some other station pounces on this show.
FU Fox, the finder is an amazing show that you d bags cannot see like oh I don’t know, firefly…. You even cancelled family guy…. I hate your station because you bring great shows in then drop them like trash….
So again I say FU Fox
It’s probably too much to hope that it might get picked up by a smaller cable network or something. The Finder, House and Bones are the only things I watch on Fox. I guess it’ll be down to 2 now.
Actually they cancelled house as well.
I can always count of Fox to cancel the good shows. I hope another channel picks up The Finder because really the show is well worth it.
Finder good show really need to reconsider your desicion did you ever watch it? REALLY try it on TNT or USA this summer it would work
Huge Mistake… A great unique show with action, comedy and drama. I never missed an episode. The quirky chemistry between Duncan and Stults is fantastic.. All the characters meshed very well. The problem was show promotion. No one I knew, was aware the show even existed. Once they saw an episode they were hooked to On-demand for the rest of the back episodes. More reality crap to take it’s place? American Idol, Humm more mindless garbage. And Bones… Really Bones is a terrible show, poor characters and bad comedy timing. Well I’m heading back to the USA Network as a… Read more »
Right you are. I never even heard of the show on TV I stumbled upon on Hulu one night and watched every episode in one night.
Really a shame it is cancelled. The fam found it enjoyable and quirky. Loved the topics banter between Walter and Leo. With so many new shows on so many stations it sometimes takes awhile for a show to find its audience. (We didn’t watch Glee until its second season! Didn’t even know it was on.) Fox should at least give it another season.
Bad Decision Fox!
This was an original, quirky show with a wonderful cast and you destroyed it by moving it to Fridays. Not only that, but you close the series with a great show that left so much up in the air … and now that will never be resolved. How about one last episode to tie up loose ends, or as another commenter has suggested, let it be picked up by USA network.
seriously ridiculous planning. Fox need to address their scheduling NOT cancel perfectly good viewing. Cancel the contracts of your incompetent staff!!!
Wow actual proof FOX Executives are all around idiots! Not only are they incompetent on a grand scale but they have zero understanding of how to work and re-jig schedules to maximise viewers. Let’s hope their lives reflect their incompetence and all their private lives are judged the same way they have judged our viewing by being discontinued as fast as possible.
We are so ticked that this show is cancelled. We love it. Shame shame on fox for dropping a good show but keeping stupid sit coms and silly cartoons.
My family really enjoyed this show. I think it was a bad decision to cancel it. One reason it may not have done well is NO advisement. It was simply luck when I realized it had been moved to Friday nights. Fox, PLEASE bring it back and whatever you do DON’T insult your viewers by putting another reality show in its place!!!:(
Cancelling this series was a huge mistake. It was a very clever, well written show with a great cast. Despite the fact that the 8:00 Friday is a horrible time for me to watch a TV show, my family went out of its way to make sure we were togehter to watch it. I was tremendously disappointed by the decision and I felt that the show would have been a fantastic part of your line-up. You should have been more patient and given it time to build a fan base before moving it into the early Friday evening time slot.
This is not a good idea. The Finder was a great show. It was a great spin off from Bones. You take away Bones and than what do you have. Nothing. This is the only other show that was like bones. You should have gone at least one more season to see if it would pick up. I know that I will not be watching any other shows on your channel. What other shows do you have to offer. I can not stand to watch all of these reality shows. If you want to see drama than talk to your… Read more »
Seriously? You’re willing to keep cartoons, reality tv, and other shows that have run out of new material, but you cancel one of the only unique concepts I’ve seen in a long time! Think it over FOX. Stop trying to save buck by throwing a bunch of “reality” low budget shows and give us something we can grow with. Moving any show to Friday night is like a walk down death row. Maybe the FOX decision makers should take a page from their own book and cancel their poor decisions! I have watched the reality shows for some time now,… Read more »
