Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
The Finder is wonderful. I adore it. Pls, renew it.
Yet again FOX pulls the plug on another really good show and leaves us with nothing!! How in the world is anyone suppose to get into a show if we getting them yanked from tv and times re-arranged?!? This show wasn’t even given a chance. I work second shift so it’s hard for me to watch any kind of tv, I mostly dvr my episodes and watch them when I have time. But now this leaves me to find yet another show that will most likely get canceled. Guess it’s time to watch some movies instead!!!!
FOX, I dont know who is running things…but from what ive seen….as an avid “the finder” fan…I am deeply disappointed in this news. prolly the best series you have come up with since Bones…. if you dare add another “cheaper reality series” I will discontinue purchasing and watching any and all fox networks and series as a whole. I blame your promotions and marketing departments for this series failure. I do sincerely believe the tie in with bones was a mistake, this series could have done fine on its own without introduction from Bones. perhaps a later appearance on the… Read more »
I think it’s a terrible idea to cancel this show, it’s one of the only shows I looked forward to all week, why would you cancel a show so well made and you let fringe be on the air for season after season… The finder was a great idea, and very great show … Please give it a chance
loved The Finder – – really sad it’s not been renewed…..
Personally, I think the show was fantastic, with lovable characters who were both funny and engaging. It is sad that people don’t see the great shows for what they are, but instead want to watch dry and boring. Being a huge fan of BONES, I thought that THE FINDER had that same quirkiness we all love in the Hart Hanson shows. But, oh well.
what will it take to keep this show? how do they get their facts? what a fun and refreshing show! if this is seen by the people who makes the decsions, then please know this is a big mistake, its a great show. and so is touched! awasome show, do not let it go eather, what amazing writing and concept.
Good job fox. Canceled one of your good shows and kept the ****** ones. I think from now on I will no longer trust you for good show judgement. The finder was my favorite show on fox. You just lost another viewer.
The Finder was refreshing with interesting characters that haven’t been seen before. Reality show are ridiculous because they are not “reality” and are a waste of time. I’m disappointed that Fox is cancelling a worthy show particularly since it’s going to be difficult to replace “House”.
I am severely irritated! First “Firefly” now “The Finder”? I really hate it when you get so excited and amped up about a series, you think everything is going great – and wham, they cancel it! So frustrating! I was really looking forward to this show continuing on for at least another couple seasons. The potential was there! I agree with those whom have said this was a mistake and hope that FOX reconsiders this – if not looks like once “Bones” is done I am giving up on FOX all together!
Best new show that’s come along in a long while and they cancel it? Another reason why I’m canceling cable. Why pay for cable for a butt load of reality tv that isn’t even worth turning the tv on for?
I think the show was on a night when there were already good programs. This is an interesting program but it needs to be on a different night.
FOX! Why !!? Like so many people above are saying, FOX did it again and cancelled a really good show. I liked “The Finder” from the get go, but FOX has to give shows a chance.Stop messing with really good shows because of American Idol, not everybody watches that show! Why? FOX Why? When “House” & “Bones” are gone I won’t even watch FOX any more.
My husband and I love this show! We DVR all the shows we like and watch them when we get the time. The rating system has to be faulty to let a great show like this go by the wayside.
I also have no idea what days most shows are on because I watch them on Hulu. I am very disappointed to see the Finder, along with several other new shows, cancelled.
