Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.
Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?

Sad. This show was fun; there are very very few fun shows. The characters were odd but decent and … fun. I didn’t expect it to get renewed; it isn’t trashy enough for ‘modern’ prime time.
AND ANOTHER THING!!!!
FOX, you people put this show on Hiatus for 7 weeks. When stuff like that happens, we alll assume it was cancelled. 67 of my Facebook follwers SWARMED me with question going “Where diod the Finder go? Did they cancel it?”
Then shoving it off to the S.S Friday time slot? Everyone really thought it was off the map then!
This is so wrong! I was totally in love with this show, and the only reason this show didn’t attract enough attention was probably because of the day it aired! Friday was obviously a wrong choice, try Tuesday or Monday, and give Bones back the thursday slot! After the season (Siiigh or series) They left the cast downhearted and miserable, and you want that to be how the show goes out? NO, god no. Please please please continue it!
Fox are ******* idiot. Give a better slot to The Finder if u want ur ******* rating up. Lets rally againts the Fox to save The Finder.
Just another example of broadcast tv exec’s being out of touch when some worthless wonder decided to not promote this show more, give season one at least 15 episodes & the unimaginable, the cancelation of the show. There’s getting to be fewer & fewer good shows to watch & this was one of them. Hell, I might as well just cancel cable if this trend continues.
the way the show was left, it really sucks not to see how it will continue!! THANKS FOX!!! it was just getting more interesting and then you pulled the plug.. and as for moving to Fridays making viewers drop? well first, if you want viewers to be happy, don’t change it’s time or day. People forget what time or what day it moved to. second, when you put a show on hold, people lose interest or find something else to watch. I HATED! waiting for the new BONES to come back on!! don’t do that again!! and you’d better not… Read more »
I cant believe they canceled this show It was very good and I hope some other network picks it up
Wow! Again really? This was yet another show with interesting dialog, great characters, unique story lines. It was funny, thoughtful, and intelligently written. With better advertising, a better lineup, and just leaving it on the same night at the same time WITHOUT interuptions, it would have done very well. Apparently you don’t think your demographic can handle anything more than dumbed-down, inane, mean spirited “reality TV”.
Finally something different than the other ‘all-the-same’ series. I love The Finder. The characters are fun. The stories are good. Please continue The Finder, somebody…
i really liked this show but found myself unable to watch it at the set time slots maybe if they had had it air at a different time it would have done better but all i can say for sure is i am going to miss this show
Finally something different than all those other ‘all-the-same’ series. I loved The Finder. The characters are good, the stories are original. This is something special. Please continue this serie, somebody…
Oh my god i cannot believe they canceled this show. hands down best show fox had. watched it all the time enjoyed every second of it and Fox goes and cancels it. makes me so angry. PUT THE FINDER BACK ON!!!!
Good job Fox…shoot yourself in the other foot while you are at it. Bring back “The Finder” NOW, you idiots, IT WILL A GOOD SHOW.
Of course. FUX and its propensity for not promoting decent shows strikes again. There should be SOME kind of mandate that when a series has been allowed to run through a season, that the writers are allowed another episode or two to tie up the ends. That, of course, won’t happen because the corporate execs are too busy trying to figure out ways to make more money by exploiting viewers “relaxation” time. I bet they would even sue someone for supplying a cancelled show on torrents, because they hope one day to sell the DVD. You know, because we viewers… Read more »
Poor Finder…all the viewers are completely left wondering what will happen in the end, since nothing really got resolved. Was this Fox just spitting on The Finder one last time with the terrible, terrible ending? If the series is to end, at least sum up the major plot points. Instead, really, one character gets a decent ending. That’s it. Can’t see FX picking it up, though it fits perfect on TNT or USA. People, if u had a choice, who should pick it up?
USA for sure!!!!! The characters would fit right in on a network that hosts shows with similar eccentrics like shawn on psych
