Fans of AMC’s The Son series have been waiting since the first season’s finale (which aired in June 2017) for the return of the Western drama. We’ve now learned that season two will begin airing on Saturday, April 27th, at 9 PM. There will be 10 episodes once again and, it turns out, those will also be the end of the show. There won’t be a third season.
Here’s the relevant portion of AMC’s press announcement about The Son:
The Son
Saturday, April 27 at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT
Based on Philipp Meyer’s New York Times best-selling and Pulitzer Prize finalist novel of the same name, season two of The Son concludes the journey of the iconic “First Son of Texas.” Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) will stop at nothing to secure his legacy against the backdrop of the nascent oil industry of 1917. His tools are deceit, fraud and murder — weapons he wields with the effortless skill of the Comanche warrior he once was.But the biggest challenge he faces will be quelling a civil war under his own roof, triggered by his idealistic son Pete (Henry Garrett). Eli knows the ultimate prize of American dynasty is nearly in his grasp, and time is running out. Meanwhile, in 1851, young Eli (Jacob Lofland) is now married and a respected warrior among the Comanches, but tragedy forces him into a leadership position as the vast Comanche empire crumbles around him. Broadening the scope, a 1988 timeline is introduced, bringing the McCullough saga into the more immediate past. Here, at age 85, Eli’s granddaughter Jeanne Anne McCullough (Lois Smith) is confronted with a long-buried family secret.
The Son is produced by AMC Studios and Sonar Entertainment. Showrunner and writer Kevin Murphy, director Kevin Dowling, author Philipp Meyer, and Sonar Entertainment’s Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni are Executive Producers. In addition to Brosnan, Smith, Garrett and Lofland, the series also stars Paola Núñez, Zahn McClarnon, Jess Weixler, David Wilson Barnes, Sydney Lucas, James Parks, Elizabeth Frances, Shane Graham and Kathryn Prescott.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to watching the second season of The Son TV show on AMC? Are you sorry that there won’t be a third season?
I had trouble warming up to the series but stuck around due to a lifelong crush on Pierce Brosnan, I seem to remember that I started to like it better toward the end but it’s been twenty months. Even the worst drama can be worth watching if it’s well-designed and this one was. I just hope it doesn’t spend more than a minimal amount of time in the future. As talented as Lois Smith is, I don’t care about the oil boom in Texas in the ’80’s. Oil people don’t give a hoot about anything except money. I’d rather see… Read more »
I loved this show. I am so looking forward to season 2. Sad to hear there isn’t any more seasons. Hopefully there is a season 3. I read there wasn’t.
Another great TV show canceled. Why?
The Son was an excellent series. It should not have been canceled. I hope Netflixs picks it up like happened with Longmire.
The Son is a captivating series we love to watch! Thrilled to see 2nd season and would love to see it continue after. Please don’t cancel!
Of course they cancel it. I guess there is no whiz bang cgi, or car chases.
Love this show. AMC has a great show here. Now wants it cancelled. Does not make sense.
Finally comes the second season after such a long delay. Now they say it will be the last. Their statement that season 2 will be the last doesn’t tell us if it’s a CONCLUSION to the series, or just ANOTHER unfinished series! They’re not giving us enough information here to make an intelligent choice about getting involved with this story again. Does it mean it will come to a CONCLUSION, or does that mean the second season will suddenly just stop and leave us hanging and wondering forever what season 3 had in store. If the conclusion is in a… Read more »
They got a good show finally something an older generation likes and they pull it ..WHY
This is a good show – most AMC series are, so why is it on the chopping block?? I really wish good shows would stop getting cancelled while sooooo many garbage shows are still airing and taking up airtime….
Pick up a Season 3. This is a good show, with story lines that make you more and more curious on how the actors think and react to situations. It makes me think about my decisions and moral fiber.
I am still waiting to see the second season. When is that going to air? AMC you keep on crap and cancell good showa.
Yet another good show killed off by the geniuses @ AMC along with Into The Badlands. WTH, AMC? Not everyone is a fan of The Walking Dead which you keep renewing!
My family has been looking forward to the return of this show. I’m excited to tell my father that it will indeed return. However, it’s sad that it will not be around for a third season. It’s just excellent entertainment. Great characters, writing and scenery. I hope there will be a reprieve on this decision!
We too have been waiting for this to come back on. I really hate it that it is canceled.
Have been waiting so long for the story to continue and am really sorry that this will be the last season. It seems the only good shows that stay on for a while are on PBS.
I agree with Georgianne why didn’t they wait to see how season two did.
My favorite show. No garbage, good entertainment.
