There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Please bring it back….there is to much reality tv and not enough good shows. The Unit was always what we waited all week for.
Just thought i’d come back & let cbs know, i have just locked out the channel for the local cbs station on my tv’s 7.
so viewers over 55 don’t count ? you better check the average age of the country & find out where most of the money is. This show was a great alternitive to the mineless supercop & medical shows
Please bring it back. I grew up on military bases while my dad put in 20 years in the Marines. I love watching, it actualy touches on some of the issues we faced as a military family. Plus it’s one show my husband I watch together.
The Unit was smart, tight and politically incorrect…in short, a GREAT show. Please bring it back. My whole family loves The Unit.
Again, the networks move a show around, scatter the episodes so we never know when or if it will be on and you wonder why the networks are in decline. I wish I had the money to start a network with all the shows these fools cancel. I’d run The Unit, Firefly, Jericho, Journeyman, Crusoe, Amsterdam and the rest up against Survivor Hoboken, Dancing with the Prune Danish and CSI: Topeka. I’m going to quit watching network TV altogether. About the time I find a good show, the network inevitably cancels it. And so what if the average viewer is… Read more »
the unit was the show that brought me to CBS and now you are telling me it’s over, but in all your wisdom you found it necessary to put out yet another CSI…..I pray that some other network will have more common sense and pickup this mad ass show
I think one reason for the decline in viewership of The Unit is the increased involvment of the wives. Last season was not true to the original concept of The Unit. Untrained family members would not be involved in such dangerous tasks. I am going to miss this show.
How could you? Of all the nit-witted decisions to make. I look forward to watching the Unit. If the producers are smart, they should pander the show to the Fox network or the cable networks; hey, they’ve got some good-action, well-developed characters worth watching. Yes, these charactes would be welcomed on TBS, et. al. I truly have enjoyed this show and now, the dumpkopf have done it again. The Unit has an loyal following. What were you thinking, CBS? Just when I was starting to watch more of you shows, minus your silly sit-coms. I hope that Mamet takes the… Read more »
Another brilliant move by yet another band of nitwits.
rediculous,
i guess now the only thing left to do is put CSI in another city…The Unit is the best show on national television. I’ll boycot CBS
OH NO!!!!!! my husband is in the military and got me hooked on this when he got back home!! I bought all first three seasons and watched them all over an entire weekend!! i was hooked and after last seasons confusing/mix signaled ending i prayed they wouldn’t can it!! my husband and i love this show and how it so accurately portrays the military life and how we endure it day in and day out!!
