There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Wow… I was just looking for what day and time that The Unit would be on this Fall… sadly, I see it has been CANCELLED. That did not make my day. Certainly the avg age of 55, which covers the Baby Boomers era, must have somehow gotten over looked as one of the generation with money and more apt to respond positively to the ads that support TV programming. Needless to say, as in the movie “Pretty Woman” in my opinion .. BIG MISTAKE!
Even though this show came on Sunday night at a time later than I like to stay up, I looked forward all weekend to being able to watch it. I found the show spellbinding and the parallel with current world situations gave it a certain reality. I hope that there will be enough positive viewer opinion to convince the people at CBS to bring this show back.
totally gutted that this is the end of the unit my favourite show over here in the uk
This was mine and my husband’s favorite show. I can’t believe that is has been cancelled. I’m sorry to say, but you’ve just gone down a notch in my book. that show is one of the best shows on tv. It had something for the men and the women. I can’t believe you’d cancel it over some of the other retarded shows you have on TV. Good luck to CBS. You’re gonna need it if you keep making those decisions.
I can not believe that cbs cancelled The Unit this is by far one of the best shows on tv . I usually watch cbs when i watch tv but not anymore i will miss watching ncis but i’m tired of the reality shows and all of the junk. I guess i will watch fx and usa good luck to you cbs. And thanks for taking a great show off the air and oh by the way you have lost a viewer,
Wow! The Unit was a talented and entertaining show…big mistake to cancel…
You have got to be kidding me…..I guess to make way for ANOTHER STUPID REALITY show that just keeps getting more ridiculous . I do not think I can stomach another one
Please bring back “the Unit”
The only thing on tv that I watched. I hoped it was a hoax that this show was cancelled. Absolutely stupid. The network need to start listening to their audience. I’m from UK and really p’d about this.
THsi is crazy… a show that pays tribute to out miltary in an realistic manner. I am a fan I hope thay bring it back…. or a show that is like it. Again these people who decide on showes I think do not know their audiance.
Thats a bunch of bull, about the average age is or should I say was 55. Im 27 and absolutely loved the show. I dont know what the heck is the matter with this people.
Yea this do suck that had to be by far one of my favorite shows along with NCIS. Wat? Is that next? Damn!
This Sucks the only show on tv that I really watch is taken off the air. I blame the loss of viewers on CBS they moved it to Sundays and it seemed like every week it was removed from the time slot for something stupid. It’s a great weekly show, like I said weekly cbs, not once a month on a Sunday afternoon. I loved this show and think I will just quit watching the cbs network all together. Along with the rest of my friends and family members. I can get my local news through NBC. I have all… Read more »
This is or was only four regular tv shows I would watch! The rest of network tv is not worth my time. The only ones I will still watch is NCIS , LOST SURVIVOR. I am turning my TV time to cable shows….The UNIT had good storys and good writers. It lost it way when CBS did something stupid. The moved it from Tuesday to Sunday night. It fit perfect right behind NCIS . What a shame it woun’t be on anymore……
This was the ONLY show I watched faithfully. I stopped watching television regularly years ago. There is nothing but junk on these days. The Unit had substance and the writing kept me wanting more from week to week. It’s a shame that television has changed to programs that lack substance. I am so disappointed that they didn’t even consider wrapping up the story with a final season. I guess the fans don’t mean much to CBS. Oh well, there REALLY is no reason to turn back to CBS now.
