ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

One of the ONLY prime time shows I watched! Sad to see it go. What happens to Leo and Eric? Loved the show. Reminded me of Hill Street Blues.
I was very disappointed to read this show will not be returning. It’s funny, clever, while
also being serious and sad. It’s a shame that they did not really even give this show a chance to acquire more of an audience. I will miss this show.
Damn – I think this is one of those shows that would grow on you if given a chance. It definately had some twist to it! Would love to see USA pick it up with their Characters Welcome!
I am so disappointed to hear this. I never miss an episode (DVR). Do the Neilson ratings take into account people who have to record prime time shows because of work schedules? The cast is funny and they fit one another very well. Hopefully another network will get smart and pick these guys up.
When compiling the data for the show, did that take into account that nobody watches ABC?
Having almost 5 million people watch the show is amazing. I assumed that on any given day only a few hundred people actually watched ABC (on purpose that is).
I love the Unusuals. Finally, a show that’s funny, smart and intelligent – very few of these on TV nowadays. Networks just don’t give shows an opportunity to collect and nuture an audience. I’ve been very disappointed the past few years, something worth watching on TV will be yanked after a few short weeks to be replaced by some mind-numbing, cheaply made reality program aimed at the lowest common denominator.
Like other posters, I too may return to reading.
love the show; perhaps Fox can pick it up.
To be honest, it’s not meant for ABC.
I am so upset that the show was cancelled. It was interesting, funny, sad and had real NY stories associated with typical NY cops. It should have been given a better shot and more hype. In my house we wouldn’t miss it at all and many of my friends felt the same. Great writing and wonderful actors associated with this show!! If another network picked it up they would make it a success!!
I hate to even start watching new shows these days. Every time I find a show that I really like and can really get in to, it gets cancelled. The Unusuals was such an entertaining show. It combines the cop drama that I love so much with comedy. I’m really disappointed.
I am so very disappointed. I very rarely watch tv these day’s but this show was funny, and dramatic, and really well written. Thanks a lot ABC. I think I’ll go back to reading.
I feel ABC is making a big mistake. My husband and I really enjoy this show. It is funny and dramatic at the same time. I don’t think it was given a fair chance. ABC please reconsider!
Once again a network develops a well written, acted and produced show just to do almost no advertising for it and wonder why its not doing well. Than mess with its time slot so some of the people who are watching it and up missing it. Than the immediate answer is well lets just cancel it. ABC will probably just replace it with a cheap and mindless reality show.
Love the show! Love the humor! Love the sarcasm! Absolutely love the soundtrack…. I can’t believe they would cancel such a great show!!!!
I’ll admit – I didn’t know what to make of the 1st episode, but there was something there that made me tune in again the following week. Oddly the second show didn’t do much for me either…., but there was still something. It took until week four or five for me to realize that for all the quirkiness written into the characters I was seeing something else come through – humanity. These actors were taking some rather well written prose and expressing it through a reality checker – we saw more than just glimpses of how we, sitting at home,… Read more »
PLEASE don’t cancel it. This is the best cop show on right now. And I WATCH THEM ALL. Everything from all of the Law & Order’s, right down to Britain’s MI5. This is a FRESH NEW format, and cast. Please try again!
