ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

Darn! I just got hooked, only to find it canceled. Nice ensemble cast — maybe too expensive to keep? It would be nice if a cable station picked it up, and I could buy the eps on iTunes (I don’t have cable). Yes, I get a guffa from Wipeout, but I would really like a show that makes me both laugh and care about the people on the show. This was that rare one.
Funny, it was axed before I even got to hear about it. Timeslots or no, but that was a premature decision if I ever saw one. Flash us five eps with the start in the middle of nowhere, season-wise, and then they are surprised when the ratings arent good enough?
I loved this show. I tivo it every week. It sucks that it is off the air. I looked forward to watching it. There are not many good cop shows left. This one was unique and I loved it. Please reconsider.
Hate to see it go. This happens so often we find something that’s not just the usual pap and poof it’s gone. I still mourn “EZ Streets.”
First you cancel Life On Mars, and now THE UNUSUALS!!!! We are so sad to see it go! This was a quirky, intelligent, entertaining, interesting show. One of the best I’ve seen. I truly enjoyed it and looked forward to it every week. Reconsider!
Nothing left on ABC. First Life on Mars, now the Unusuals. I watch very little tv, and ABC keeps killing all their good shows. I get hooked on one, and they pull it after a half a season??! Wow! Brilliant decision making from the execs at ABC. I doubt I’ll watch another show they put out for fear that it too will get pulled.
I absolutely love the “Unusuals”. The plots, the characters and the chemistry among them. It wish you would change your mind and put the show back on. I think alot of other viewing would agree.
The Unusuals, Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone… All amazing shows that actually make America’s brains not go to mush after watching them. What else is ABC going to cancel? I’m sick of television shows that are simply mindless. God forbid we have any creativity pumped into our primetime schedules. So, ABC, are you going to have your own and equally as lame and ridiculous version of “I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!”? Probably. ABC finally has some quality television and immediately cancels the shows before giving them a chance or enough promotions.
love the show please don’t cancel it also appeals to my granddaughter 21 and her friends
Loved this show…so sad to see it go!
sorry to see this show go. .loved that i could watch it online!
I am really disappointed! My husband and I have very few shows we watch together. He loves this show as much as I do. I don’t even watch cop shows and I started watching just because of Amber Tamblyn (fan of the sisterhood of the travelling pants) and the show was so good. . I had to keep watching.
I’m really disappointed. My family and I really enjoyed this show. I’m so tired of the networks not giving these shows a real chance to make it. They always want to force the really horrible shows on us. By leaving them on and giving them all the publicity. I think they should give them all a fair shot. I hope they really consider bringing this show back as well as lipstick jungle.
I wonder if the statistics account for people who watch the show solely online, since I stopped subscribing to my cable service many months ago and stopped watching television long before that. I can’t believe there are still people out there who will actually watch ‘live’ television, since now everything is available online or through DVD rental services, and everyone can enjoy wonderful programming nearly commercial free and through much less expensive routes.
Hey, I saw that someone mentioned USA would be a great network to pick up The Unusuals. On the USA website there is a Feedback page where you can send an e-mail. One of the categories is “Suggest a Program”. I sent them an e-mail and I think everyone else should do the same! It would be a shame if this show did not see the light of day again. It’s one of the few shows on TV that does not treat the audience like a bunch of idiots.
