ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

oh come on is this a joke?
Yeah this was a great idea. I am so tired of all these networks canceling great shows and coming out with more reality tv. They blame the viewers, I blame the networks. I am tired of the networks and of the media. This show was was so good, just as was eli stone and the multitude of others that have been canceled. But let’s make more shows like “I’m a celebrity, get me outta here.” Really great stuff, stupid reality crap. Cable needs to pick up The Unusuals since network seems to have their heads up their you know where’s.
I wonder if the major networks care or realize that more people are watching cable shows. It should not be a surprise, because they keep canceling great shows before they get a chance to take off. I hope someone picks up this show. I have no idea what is wrong with ABC. They canceled Eli Stone also……..IDIOTS!!!!!
ABC… you are STUPID. This is a great show!!! I hope the producers take it to USA.
Everytime there is a good show on it gets cancelled but yet there is the dumbest shows that are still on, I don’t get it. This show was really good. You should give it another season and maybe try a different night and time.
Please don’t cancel The Unusuals…I love this show.
If you have to cancel, can you at least tell us if Delahoy dies from his tumor and if Banks makes it to his 43 birthday.
This was actually the only show that I watched on this station. I guess I won’t be watching ABC or the CW anymore
All I can say is this is probably one of the worst decisions made in a while. This show deserved a better chance…a mid season replacement and up against American Idiot, I mean American Idol…it deserved better. And ABC made the decision to pull this series in too big of a hurry. Patience is a virtue or hadn’t they heard…This show needed a little more time and perhaps a little more advertising and it would have been a total hit!!!! It already was to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s just the stupid 1000 nielson rating boxes they have… They make all their decisions off what 1000 family’s watch and those people seem to only like reality tv. Or it seems they do watch the same old crap cop shows am hospital shows.. Move the boxes to normal peoples houses or stop using them altogether! 1000 boxes in houses doesn’t mean crap when tv is in 200,000,000 homes alone in the US!
I am so sick and tired of watching new shows only to have them cancelled midseason or not back for a season 2. This was a good show, beat the hell out of those reality shows and now it’s bit the dust. Maybe it’s time to start boycotting the networks!!!!
Yet another good show axed. I’m getting really fed up with getting into a show to only have it canceled… while networks leave the uncreative, annoying shows behind.
No reason to really watch anymore because why get involved in a show that will be canceled shortly?
Thanks ABC you’d done it ‘again’.
I too am sick of the reality shows. I don’t watch them and don’t plan to. The Unusuals was a “cop” MASH. Great show! I also liked Life, but unfortunately there are too many people in the US who like to live their lives through others, with ridiculous reality shows. ABC, and for that matter other networks, might get more viewers if they’d provide decent entertainment. I’m sorry to see the Unusuals leave, was hoping for another try next season. I’ll miss them.
I’m fed up. Another in a series of quality dramas axed by ABC. I wish they would provide a little time for word to get around and for decent shows to build a following. Pushing Daisies was an American Amélie; Life on Mars fascinating and addictive; (until the travesty of a conclusion); and now The Unusuals bites the dust? Unnuanced, simplistic, formulaic garbage like Grey’s Anatomy remains on the air and meanwhile real artistry and writing languishes. Enough.
They say they are looking for another “cop show”. What about Castle? That’s coming back right?
This is disappointing. I really liked this show! I agree with other posters who have commented about the reality TV crud…I’m seriously thinking about cancelling our cable. Another show on NBC that I really enjoyed was Life…great show too that was cancelled. What’s up?!
