ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

It’s a shame the Unusuals has already been cancelled. How can you decide after only 3 shows to cancel a character driven dramady? The characters and audience are just finding each other.
It’s obvious that the actors, writers, directors and people on the set were committed to a quality show. It’s too bad a network channel didn’t give them the chance they deserved. But then again, network television is becoming notorious for tossing out the good shows before they have a chance to solidify and keeping all the ridiculous, melodramatic garbage that falls under realitiy t.v.
Leave it to an old fogie network like ABC to cancel a great show like The Unusuals. No wonder the major networks are dying. Too bad this wasn’t on HBO.
I have never been a fan of the ABC lineup … mainly because where I grew up you couldn’t get their signal. But I finally started watching it with Eli Stone, Pushing Dasies, and The Unusuals (Also Cupid but I knew that was going to die a quick death). Unfortunately they cancelled all these shows because it is cheaper to make a “reality show” than spend the money for a quality show that can last many years and actually be entertaining. I guess that they are spending so much on Desperate Housewifes, Lost, and Grey’s Anatomy that they can’t afford… Read more »
shame on you for cancelling “The Unusuals” … the more we watched, the more we wanted to watch and get involved with the characters’ lives and what makes them tick … please reconsider … put it back on next season …
Bummer! I had dvr’d the series and just watched them – only to find out the series was cancelled. Maybe a cable channel can pick it up?
This was an awesome show. It is very disappointing that it was canceled. I never missed a show and also watched a couple twice on hulu. I was really hoping they weren’t going to cancel this in favor of some lame reality show or the likes. This was one of the very few shows I actually watched on ABC.
I can’t believe this show has been cancelled. What a shame. All these stupid reality shows and finally a show I look forward to watching, DVR it if I am busy and miss it, and sometimes watch episodes I’ve already seen online. Get a grip ABC, I guess I’ll be watching a channel that doesn’t cater to politicans and scripted reality shows. Maybe you’ll get a bailout package for this, huh?
I’m bummed too. I was really looking forward to this show. I was away a couple of weeks and missed the last episodes. This sucks. Is it too late for them to reconsider?
Why would they do this? I love this show. It was the perfect blend of comedy and drama and it had great characters.
Are we really never going to find out what happens to Delahoy? Does Banks’ death phobia ever go away? Do Walsh and Shraeger ever hook up? O_o
These are questions I want answered!
What a shame.
ABC has proven that a well written show with such creativity power like The Unusuals and the network’s inability to understand their audience don’t mix.
And the fact that reality shows are the norm now days is only showing what a network like ABC thinks about their audience.
They are in fact reflecting a lack of wit that takes to show that they care about good quality shows.
Oh come on, they cant be serious about that. This was the first new Show in a long time i was looking forward to to watch. Thats messed up. There is so much BS showing, I totally agree with Jackie
This was one of my favorite shows. I’ve been trying not to miss any episode of this show. Too bad it didn’t have enough viewer share. It was very entertaining. The story are really good. It has very nice characters and has combination of comedy, drama, and action. I wish they will give it another shot for a second season. I was really looking forward for the 2nd season and what will happen to each of the characters. I don’t know why reality (some of them are scripted really) shows are being watched more than the good acting shows like… Read more »
So pissed. I cannot believe the unusuals has been canceled. Guess what…..I will be tuning to another network, that was the only show I liked on ABC so GOODBYE.
I guess they need to do another Obama health care special…Oh thats right that was a bigger bust…….
The ABC staff needs to pull their heads out of Obamas butt and focus on good TV.
Bringing back the Unusual will be a good start.
What a shame. This was a terrific show. I always looked forward to it. We have “I Survived A Japanese Game Show” but cancel a quality program like The Unusuals.
I don’t know who makes these decisions but whoever canceled this show, has his/her head up their behind !!!
I TOTALLY agree with you Carol. The Unusuals was the only show I made a point of always watching. Now when I surf through the channels I find that it is no longer on. What a sad, sad thing to cancel a show that had humour, drama etc……..
But we still get to watch Big Brother, I’m a Celebrity……Get me out of Here and MC Hammer, only to name a few. Give me a bowl……I need to hurl.
