ABC won’t be making its official announcement until tomorrow but the axe has already fallen for midseason’s The Unusuals.
The dramady revolves around a dysfunctional but effective group of New York City cops. The series features the talents of Amber Tamblyn, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Joshua Close, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Kai Lennox, Terry Kinney, Adam Goldberg, Ryan O’Nan, Ian Kahn, Kat Foster, Heather Burns, Robert Funaro, and George Aloi.
The ABC show debuted on April 8th to a disappointing 6.83 million viewers and a 2.1/6 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers fell to 6.01 million and a 1.8/5. The network tried a different timeslot but the numbers were worse and subsequently fell to a terrible 4.74 million and a 1.4/4.
Though ABC really wanted to find a new cop drama, it became pretty clear that this one wasn’t going to be it. The network has opted to cancel The Unusuals rather than order a second year.
Their official schedule will be announced tomorrow but show creator Noah Hawley has already been informed that the show is dead.
He twittered, “Friends, just heard The Unusuals will not be back for a second season. Thanks for all your amazing support.” He later wrote, “It’s a tough loss.”
There are four episodes left in season one and ABC will begin airing them next week, on May 27th.

MAN! That stinks! I absolutely loved that show! It was quirky and interesting. Everytime I really get into a new show ,BAM cancelled. Makes you shy to try to get into any new series. I’m disappointed.
Love this show with it’s characters, good story lines. They all come from different backgrounds and mesh.
PLEASE keep this show, give it a chance.
This was a great show. Its not realistic for the networks to expect people to catch onto a show in 6 episodes. The networks should allow some time for people to catch on. Switching airing dates for a brief week or two isnt goign to make the difference. Why do they bother producing something and cancelling it before it even gets a chance. It was an excellent show. Just as I started to tell people to start watching it, they issued the announcement that it would be cancelled! They should let shows run for 2 seasons before they make any… Read more »
This show is so well done–writing, acting, directing, editing–that I would be willing to watch it in real time (as opposed to viewing off a dvr), and suffer through commercials, if ABC would keep it alive.
In protest to Life on Mars being cancelled I refused to watch whatever replaced it.
love this show. i don’t know why abc can’t give shows a chance. this was different from other cop shows. i hope someone else picks the show up. we will watch it wherever it goes.
I am really bummed. I enjoyed the combination of the cop drama with the lighthearted comedy. I enjoy this show MUCH more than Southland, which I found boring and same-old, same-old, and that got renewed. FIGURES! They always drop the good ones!
It’s a shame. Haven’t been able to watch the show on Wednesdays but just watched episode 6 online. It’s a show I could have really gotten into because it was, ‘Unusual.’ Already I liked the writing and really enjoyed the characters. Its too bad.
to hell w/abc u r stoopid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Loved the show. The more you watched it the better it got. VERY over the reality shows. Can”t watch ABC anymore.
There are just way too many reality shows out there. Thanks ABC, let’s have another season of “The Bachelor” and not a well written show. Its such a shame what is going on. “The Unusuals” was quirky, smart, and I really got hooked after the first episode. Now they are going to end the first season and leave nothing for the fans that actually like the show. Thanks ABC for taking away a great show.
I have to agree with most of the comments here: ABC execs are acting stupidly, like NBC. The Unusuals was uncommonly well written and acted. It was interesting and entertaining and I quickly grew to look forward to it every week. Now, without giving it a chance, they cancel it. Stupid. Just stupid. For this kind of decision-making, ABC deserves to go the way of NBC: down the tubes. In a previous post, John said: TO HELL WITH ABC. I AM DONE WITH THEM. I feel the same way. I suspect this rating system they use is defective because it… Read more »
They need to allow viewers to buy these shows back. Personally I’d have no problem paying a dollar a season for this show and I’m sure millions others might as well. Ideally I wish I could pay for only the channels/shows I watch but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
The Unusuals is a quirky show. Something that was different not just the same humdrum stuff we see on t.v. all the time.
I enjoyed it very much and I am dissapointed it didn’t catch on.
seriously? that sucks. this was a great show, good writing, witty lines and quirky characters. maybe abc should run a disclaimer, no GED or formal education necessary to watch our shows. back to discovery, travel and bbc. that really is too bad, this was a great show.
