After a four week run, FOX says the honeymoon is over for David E. Kelly’s The Wedding Bells series.
The Wedding Bells follows the Bell sisters, Annie (KaDee Strickland), Jane (Teri Polo) and Sammy Bell (Sarah Jones), who inherited “The Wedding Palace” following their parents’ divorce. The staff also includes Jane’s husband and company COO Russell Hawkins (Benjamin King), photographer David Conlon (Michael Landes), and wedding singer Ralph Snow (Chris Williams).
The series debuted on March 7th on FOX following American Idol. Over 12.4 million watched the initial episode. That sounds impressive until you realize that the comedy lost almost 16 million from Idol. Once Bells started in its new Friday night timeslot, viewership quickly fell even further. The most recent episode attracted only 4.5 million.
Production was shut down yesterday following the completion of the seventh episode. Four episodes have aired thus far and FOX maintains that the remaining three will see the light of day. The Wedding Bells remains on the schedule this week but was already scheduled to be pre-empted next week (for an airing of the movie White Chicks). It’s unlikely that the series will return.
A spokesperson for FOX said, “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, (Bells) just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for.” Stay tuned!
I loved this show–finally a comedy drama that was entertaining and what happens? Sadly it appears that only laugh-tracked sitcoms get ratings — unfortunate for those of us who want to laugh for ourselves. Some of us actually do have brains and appreciate sarcasm at its best — hard to find on TV these days.
Cancelling this show was a big mistake — my fiance even liked it, and getting him to watch anything except “Deal or No Deal” is a miracle.
Please re-think this!! (Obviously the time slot wasn’t quite right, but that is why this family has TIVO.)
ME TOO! I actually watched it on Friday night — the only thing WORTH watching on Friday night. I am SO disappointed (besides House). Bring it back!! At least show the ones already produced!!
I am so sad it ended… it was so great.. i looked fwd so much to seeing it each week…
I love this show!!They got this so wrong!!! I had my tivo set to record every show!! Me and my husband loved it!! I could not wait to see how far it went…It made me laugh so hard!!! Please BRING it back geez
I really enjoyed this show. I think that the network should find a differnt time slot for this show. Maybe something during the week. Maybe a Wednesday night? For me it’s not a problem what day the show is on b/c I tape it on my dvr. I know that there are people out there that do not have a dvr or a tivo and that is why the network should change the time slot from a weekend slot to during the week slot.
Finally a show that had humor, a good developing plot with great characters and clever writing. A feel good show that left you happy. Please give it another chance. Let the audience see more.
I guess I have to forgive my father for not getting the show on TiVo. I thought he messed it up. There are some shows which you know are garbage. Like Drive. I never would’ve dreamed a show so well written, well acted and so funny would be canceled. Upset is an understatement.
FOX decided to put it on Friday nights. It’s more than good enough to be on Sunday night, or better yet, let it take over the garbage Prison Break/Drive time on Monday night.
Stupidity FOX, stupidity.
Well..it figures. A few weeks ago, when some other network changed/cancelled something I’d regularly watched, I surfed and found Wedding Bells. At first my husband and I thought it would be another frothy, dumb show, but watched it anyway. Surprise! It was well-written and well-acted and delightfully wacky. Now it’s been dumped??!! Fox’s pimply-faced pubescent programmers obviously have no idea what works with their viewers. If a show doesn’t pull billions of people within three episodes, they dump it. Most worthwhile shows take a little time (and a lot of advertising) to develop a following. Why American Idiot is so… Read more »
Are you people crazy? My husband and I never watched TV together on Friday nights. There was nothing on that either of us both enjoyed. Wedding Bells was the only show that got my husband out of the garage and into the house to watch a show together. I am extremely saddened that you have taken this show off the air. Shame on you Fox.

I can not believe this show was canceled. It was a joy for Friday night TV. The characters and writing was refreshing. I content the TV exec’s should reconsider.
