Parenthood: Mixed Reviews, Cancel or Keep It?

ParenthoodAfter endless commercials during the Olympics and lots of print ads, NBC’s Parenthood has debuted. The show has experienced several bumps on its journey to primetime but now it’s finally here and NBC has high hopes for the series. Will it be a hit?

Parenthood revolves around the extended and very colorful Braverman family of Northern California. The large cast includes Lauren Graham, Peter Krause, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia, Mae Whitman, Miles Heizer, Erika Christensen, Sam Jaeger, Dax Shepard, Joy Bryant, Monica Potter, Sarah Ramos, and Max Burkholder.

Last night’s premiere debuted to an average of 8.1 million viewers with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic. That put Parenthood in second place in total viewers (behind The Good Wife) but in first place in the demo. There was also very little erosion of the audience during the course of the episode.

While it’s positive that Parenthood won its timeslot in the demo, the numbers are surely not as good as NBC was hoping for, especially considering all of the promotion. Still, considering the state of the rest on NBC’s schedule, this should be considered a victory for the ailing peacock network.

As per usual, we’ll have to see how many viewers return week after week to know if Parenthood has a real chance at survival. For now, things look positive.

What do you think? Is Parenthood worth watching or are you changing the channel? Cancel or keep it?

I love this show. It is one of a very few shows that isn’t about sex or violence. I’m sick of all the crap on TV and then a quality show comes on and the network wants to cancel it. Please don’t cancel!!!!

I for one am getting tired of the show. I wish the writers would come up with some better story lines. The season started out promisingly enough with Christina’s mayoral campaign, but in subsequent weeks the show seems to have floundered and is not moving in any direction. The marital problems between Julia and Joel aren’t enough to sustain my interest and I wish Drew’s needy girlfriend would just go away. Didn’t we already go through this when Christina and Adam had similar troubles with their marriage? Maybe the writers are planning something, like writing some of the characters out, and I should be more patient and wait for the outcome. I have watched the show regularly since it first went on the air. I really like some of the characters on Parenthood and have mixed feelings about whether it should stay or go. I would rather see a show be cancelled while it is still decent than have it remain on the air and get boring. Maybe they need some new characters? I don’t like to criticize without offering some possible solutions. There certainly are enough people on the show to allow for some originality. I guess that’s a problem for shows that have been on the air for 5 years or more. Either the actors don’t want to stay after their original contracts are up, or they don’t want to go although their characters basically are just filler with no interesting story lines to keep viewers interested. Guess that’s why even good shows go off the air sooner or later.

PARENTHOOD is one of the absolute few that deserves a slot somewhere. True fans will find it and support it. Some shows, such as this one, should not be lost in the ratings game. Quality deserves a different standard. I truly hope others see this as well. Friday would be an ideal day for this great program to air and thrive. I’ll be sad if it’s cancelled already, I haven’t heard that yet, so let it be and bring it back.
