It’s been suspected for awhile that 24 could be in its final season but the word is now official. The FOX series is ending after eight seasons on the air.
A high-action show, 24 follows a day in the life of Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), a sometime government agent who gives his all to stop terrorists and uncover conspiracies and corruption. This season, the cast includes Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Anil Kapoor, Annie Wersching, Chris Diamantopoulos, Cherry Jones, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Westfeldt, John Boyd, Katee Sackhoff, and Mykelti Williamson.
The ratings have been in decline for awhile but, like most shows that have been on the air for a long time, the production costs have been rising.
Word of the show’s cancellation started to seep out earlier this afternoon. Director and Executive Produer John Cassar tweeted, “News from the 24 set, the crew has been told that 24 has come to an end. There will b no season 9. Its been a great run, thanx all 4 watching”
The official word came down that the TV series is ending by mutual decision of executive producer Sutherland, executive producer and showrunner Howard Gordon, Twentieth Century Fox Television, Imagine Entertainment and Fox Broadcasting Company. The current season will continue to air on schedule and finish off with a two-hour finale on Monday, May 24th.
Of the series’ end, Sutherland tells the LA Times, “We’ve done eight years we’re very proud of, and we’re very excited about going into the film world with this… It’s very sad, the only thing tempering this from being all-out heartbreak is the fact that we have this sense of accomplishment. That’s the only thing holding people up. Because, for me, and all these people who’ve been with us since the beginning, it’s a very special thing and it’s very sad to see it end.”

There was talk of another network possibly taking the show on, most likely NBC, but that seemed unlikely considering the show’s age and costs. Sutherland tells TV Guide “that was never a real possibility for me.”
Instead of another season, Jack Bauer and company (depending on whoever survives the final episodes) will move directly into feature film mode. Sutherland says, “The hour-by-hour, episode-by-episode dynamic that made for such a thrill ride on television tied us down creatively. In real time, our characters can’t move around. But in a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day, all of a sudden, Jack can get on a plane and fly from South America to Russia to England, and still have time to save the day in Washington.”
A script that would take Jack to Europe has been in the works for awhile and shooting could begin as early as this summer.
For now, fans are left to wonder how the final hours of the 24 TV series will wind down. It’s safe to say that Jack will live to see another day. Sutherland says, “What I do like about the ending and what I can say about it is that it’s very definitive about where Jack is going to end up. It can be perceived as a cliffhanger on some level, but there’s no questioning his options. That’s something we’ve never been able to do in the context of this series.”
Gordon says he toyed with how to end the show for years and didn’t count on the emotional impact that writing it would have on him. He says that the script was two days late and he just didn’t want to let it go.
That finale script includes a role for Eriq La Salle. The actor, best known for his role on ER, will play a “regal and charming UN Secretary General” in the final pair of episodes. You may recall that this was the role that was being cast recently with an alert from casting that these would be the final episodes.
What do you think? Are you sorry that the show’s ending or do you think it’s time for it to end? Will you see the movie?

Best show ever. Every hour every Monday just flew by. Never bored (even with commercials interrupting). Will definitely see the movie. Farewell Jack Bauer for now anyway.
No doubt they are taking this great show off the air to make room for more nonsensical ‘reality’ crap! “24” is suffering the same fate as other great series like “Sopranos” and soon to be “Entourage”, because networks are all about the bottom line in this economy, and crap like “Idol” and “Bachelor” simply make more $$$… Too bad really, but looking forward to the big screen version, should kick ass over the “Mission:Impossible” and the “Bourne” series, as long as Kiefer can keep himself out of the bottle?
I have no idea what my friends and i are going to do on Monday nights……i guess Dancing with the Stars got there big break………I will miss Jack and the team……but if you really take a look back….how much longer will Jack save the day…..The show is at its greatest and its the best time to go…I wish American Idol did the same….Good luck to them and we will miss them and look forward to see the movie…….(As always 24 Junkie)
I think it’s run it’s course with the 24 hour format. It still holds my interest this year but scenarios are being repeated. There’s only so many times Jack can save us from nuclear devices. Yes, I’ll see the movie.
I am very sad to ssee the mgo..I am really upset with myself however for cathcing on so late with such a facinating show. So now insted of watching a season 9, I have to watch a movie and live in older seasons. :'(
This was horrible news. Don’t understand why Fox would want to cancel. I hope this is Keith’s decision and not because of the ratings. Everyone I know watches it, and can’t wait for Mondays. I will miss you Jack Bauer!!! What will I ever do on Mondays now : (
Great show, great run…sure to be a great movie
Love the show! Don’t understand what FOX is doing here, unless Keifer is getting tired.
But I think that’s it. K. Sutherland and Howard Gordon are getting really tired.
During some interview, Gordon stated that he didn’t even pitch an idea for a ninth season because he couldn’t come up with anything.
I’ve watched 24 since its’ inception. Other than the news, this is the only show that commands my attention. If movies are in line, may there be a minimum (2) a year and at least (3) hours long. Monday nights will never be the same!
I am devastated! It seems that I look forward to the show every January when it airs, and now that will not happen. If Kiefer Sutherland is tired and needs a break, why can’t they put him in a coma for a season or 2, keep the show going with a tightly wound and suspenseful plot and bring him back! If they can do an entire season where Bobby Ewing died, and have it turn out that it was a dream because viewers were not happy, this is certainly a possibility. I guess the cost of the shows finally got… Read more »

I with you! As poor as I am, if asked to contribute to continued production of 24, I’d have to go hungry a few days a month.
I kinda saw it coming but I was really hoping that they would finish up the trilogy and do a season 9 and then make season 10 the movie. But oh well… There were too many stupid storylines this season and they focused too much on characters that were really annoying such as Dana Walsh. Her storyline is really ANNOYING and I wished that they focues more on the older characters that people like, such as Chloe and Kim, who I think that Marylynn Rajskub and Elisha Cuthbert are really good at playing. It would be nice to see Kiefer… Read more »
What will we do on Monday nights at our house? We live on Mondays for what we call
J. B. and B. W.
Jack Bauer and Buffalo Wings
It has been a great run Jack!
As Sutherland said it himself, the intriguing format, though innovative and exciting, “ties them down creatively.” So it’s the perfect time to end the adventure while it’s still drawing millions of viewers every week. I’m glad that I will be able to miss it without lamenting its pitiful end. Farewell!
’24’ was almost magically placed to take advantage of the Sept 11, 2001 tragedy. So call this a coincidence, if you like. FOX Infotainment/News dispenser certainly made the most of this show and for 8 seasons. Now viewers are looking for more light-hearted novelty shows, like Glee (I love it) and “Dancing with the Stars.” (ecch) Crime dramas never seem to go out of fashion, but ’24’ just made too many demands on its viewers, with multiple plot-lines. Also, ’24”s season 8 has taken place almost entirely at night. Too many under-cover-of-darkness scenes. And they took a beloved character, Agent… Read more »
Have you been watching the show run its course at ALL…Chloe definitely had a major role in the last episode (I LOVE when they give her something to work with, really gives the show that interesting dynamic). Renee has not been written out of the season, just a few episodes. They always give major characters (the only exception being Jack). They get a break during the season. They have been doing that since the beginning. And the undercover of darkness stuff….HOLY CRAP…they started the day late this year. BIG DEAL!!!! The rest of the season starting during that two hour… Read more »
[…] Right on “24″ In Uncategorized on March 27, 2010 at 10:38 am Well that exciting Fox show “24″ is finally winding down. Am I right that we have had nine seasons of the show? This will be even worse than my Trekkie […]
Actually, I’m relieved — I don’t think I could take another season of the suspense. In the best season (5) the suspense was nearly unbearable. 24 can’t top itself anymore so it’s time for a great run to end.
