After tonight, Jack Bauer is finally going to get a day off — for a little while anyway. Though 24 is going off the air, there are plans to make a movie based on the TV show. It’s supposedly going to involve Jack battling some form of evil in Europe. But, where does it stand?
Executive producer Howard Gordon recently told Movieweb, “The current status of the movie is that Billy Ray has written a draft which Kiefer Sutherland has read, and we’re all working together on the second draft.”
He cautioned, “Now, it’s not been shared with Fox or anybody so there is no official status right now. It’s very much a work in progress. Honestly, the movie division is on the other side of the lot and I don’t know and can’t measure their intentions or their timing, and certainly can’t measure their reaction to the script because they haven’t read it yet. ”
Gordon concluded, “So I think it’s all very much speculative at this point. I think our preference would be to do it sooner than later, of course, and get Jack back out in front of people within a year or two, but I don’t know. That would be just me speaking.”
The executive producer believes that there’s a tricky balance in crafting the movie script. He shared, “There are two sets of requirements, which is honoring the series and the creative integrity of the character, and also potentially bringing in a whole new group of people into the franchise who can then go back and watch, and believe it’s been consistent. So I think we recognize that we’re serving two masters or two audiences here, not that they are mutually exclusive but there are two requirements.”
One thing’s for sure, the conceit of events happening in real time will likely have to be abandoned. Gordon has shared in the past that the format, though interesting, often limited what kinds of stories they could tell. He believes that the movie can still work without it though. He said, “I think Jack Bauer the character has got sufficiently broad and strong shoulders to carry a movie in this genre.”
What do you think? Is the real-time format essential? What has to be in a 24 movie?

I cant wait for the movie to be shot. I dont usually go to the theatres much more inclined to watch the movie when it comes out on DVD… But with 24 I believe I will be there the moment that it is released in theatre…. Has been one of my favorite shows in the history of tv… Wish they had kept it going for a few more seasons. There is still so much they could have done, but its understandable to go out on top…. It has been one of the best shows in history…. Thanks to the 24… Read more »
I just want more “24” episodes with Jack Bauer by Kiefer Sutherland. So I don’t just want one movie, but lots of them! Like we have lots of James Bond movies!!! I don’t think the “real time” is the necessary feature. Just more of the Jack character staying true to his style and values. It would be even better to have appearances by other TV 24 characters to keep the connection to the series and even some reference to the last season would be good for the first follow-up movie.
I don’t think the real-time format is absolutely essential, especially since a movie is a lot different than a TV series, but it would be nice if they did incorporate it. I would love to see a rated R 24 movie, complete with interrogations, Jack beating up CTU security guards, and the constant plot twists we have come to expect.
DOO THE MOVIE JACKK PLEASEEEE !! <3
I look forward to the “24” movie, and I hope to see Jack Bauer back in action soon. The real-time format is what the show uses, and it works great, but I don’t think it’s essential for a movie. I think the producers can work around the time, and come up with something that will work. For the movie, I want there to be lots of combat, explosions, diabolical villains, and Jack Bauer doing what he does best: saving the day.
The real time set up of the show is not important to making a 24 movie. I just finished watching the finale episode and am/was a day oner. Its was a great ending IF they was another season but there’s not. With that being said a 150 minute movie would be perfect with Jack Bouer dieing at the end. Either way I and I’m sure most fans want to see a good ending to it all.
Real time is not essential, espescially when speaking in terms of travel. The only thing Jack has left though is his family, and I think a good story good revolve around that.
Just bring the show back. Real time doesn’t matter.
At this point, I just really want to see what happens to Jack. If the 24 hour model needs to be abandoned, then so be it.
But whatever you guys at Fox do, make it good.
I am in love with this show. I watch it every week. You definitely should make a movie
Just finished watching the series finale.
I really hope they do bring out a movie, and no I don’t think the real-time is vital. In fact that aspect of the show was pretty ridiculous IMO.
How abut not taking it off the air
What has to be in 24 the movie? Chloe O’Brien. Can’t imagine them not working together again.
24 should definately come out as a movie.
i love jack and i love the show!
My only question is why cancel 24? I mean really. I didnt watch it honestly but i guess I just wasn’t interested when it debutted. But from everything I heard, nothing bad. It seemed like top grade action but I didn’t wanna start it when it already been on for a few seasons esspecially when it always picks up where it left off. I seriously thought it would be on for not a episode less than 2 more seasons. Honestly yes. It seemed it was unstoppable. I always thought the 2 top Fox shows were 24 and that stupid singing… Read more »
