ABC has decided not to order any more episodes of Back in the Game, their Wednesday night sitcom. The network initially ordered 13 episodes and filming was completed yesterday.
Co-creator Robb Cullen broke the news about the cancellation on Twitter. He wrote, “So, ABC has decided NOT 2 move forward w @BackInTheGameTV 2 all of u fangles and friends, I can’t begin 2 thank u for all of ur support.” He later indicated that the remaining seven unaired installments are expected to be broadcast.
Airing out of The Middle, Back in the Game follows a single mother (Maggie Lawson) and her son (Griffin Gluck) who move in with her gruff father (James Caan). Despite having no experience, the boy desperately wants to play baseball so his mom, a former All Star, gets roped into coaching a new team of misfits. Others in the cast are Lenora Crichlow, Ben Koldyke, Kennedy Waite, J.J. Totah, Cooper Roth, and Brandon Salgado.
The sitcom debuted in late September to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.01 million viewers. Unfortunately, the numbers have been dwindling downward since then.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Back in the Game has been cancelled? Did you enjoy the show? Will you watch the remaining episodes?
I can’t believe it is canceled they need to bring it back it was a great family show funny it is better then some of the other garbage they are airing bring back in the game back
The Goldbergs, Trophy Wife and the fat girls show stink. They should be canceled. I enjoy the Millers on CBS better then the Goldbergs. The Goldbergs would appeal to morons better. Thats the mentality of the show. Back in the game was original and funny at the same time.
once networks kill a good show and hold onto overbearing reality shows, cooking shows or another talent search show. entertainment on regular networks stink thats why i hate getting into tv sitcoms because if it is good it will be cut short into its prime maybe we can use another csi show
I really liked the show and will truly miss it on wed. nites on abc.
What a shame! This is an indication of the real direction that Disney has chosen, as it abandons true family entertainment for a variety of salacious dramas, poorly conceived news policy, and a bevy of low-cost reality plays. To even mention ABC’s and Disney’s inability to choose young actors who don’t end up in jail, is to reveal their weakened programming capacity. “Back In the Game” was a player without marketing or even standard promotional support. Shame on you, Stephen McPherson. “Modern Family” may fill your parks on Pride Day, but it is far from the glory days of your… Read more »
Very well said Bill M.!!
I’m so upset. My husband and I loved the show. It was a great family show! Why do the networks always take off great quality family shows? Don’t understand! Having three boys and my husband being a baseball coach I could really relate to show. Bring back show!
Back in the game is a wonderful show, I feel it is far better than the crazy ones. I don’t usually like sit coms. I will miss it, maybe a benevolent channel can pick it up. I would watch it where ever it turned up on.
I totally agree. This was an awesome family show. I do not watch or even get “Modern Family” or “Brooklyn 99.” TV series is getting to be more about “less common” families than the majority. It has to stop. No quality viewing for families or 40+ age group.
As Parents that coach youth sports , it is really sad to see the show leave. It was a great laugh for the whole family . The humor really hit home unlike most of the shows that have nothing in common with real families .
I agree, this was a great show. There are so few good shows on and way too many of the really stupid reality and storage war etc. Seems every time we find a show we like, it gets taken off after a brief time!
It is a cute show, the kids are good, not that big on James Cann as the father and Maggie Lawson may be the most beautiful woman on TV. It is a nuch better TV show than half the other sit-coms on the air like Dads, Shawn Saves the World, New Girl * Michael J. Fox’s show.
boo hoo for abc to cancel back in the game it was funny. You don’t see that kind of humor anywhere else. Get rid of some of the stupid reality shows some of them don’t make sense and aren’t even funny.
YES YES YES
Wow…How am I supposed to break this news to my husband. He rarely watches TV and this was one show we would watch together. Thanks a lot ABC
ABC,i t is no wonder I watch very little of your programing, Back in the game was a fun sitcom…you young yahoos need to put it back on.
So sorry to hear Back in the Game is canceled. Guess there just wasn’t enough immorality on it. So tired of not having any family friendly shows to watch that don’t have violence, sex, or just plain stupidity as their main topic. Loved this show and would laugh every week. Hopefully cable or some other network will pick it up.
Well said Sally!!!
