Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
*Sigh* Another potential great show taken away so soon! I guess there is nothing left but reality shows and would be talent competitions.
Why is it that the people in charge of scheduling don’t realize when they have what could be one of the funniest shows on television. This series was so funny and entertaining that my wife and I could hardly wait from 1 week to the next. These idiots cancel a really great show and leave pure trash on. The reality shows are an absolute insult to a normal educated viewer. Apparently ABC does not care what appeals to most people. They should at least give this show a little more time to build up an audience.
This was the funniest show on TV. The hour went too fast and my husband and I could not wait for the next episode to air. I can’t believe it is being cancelled. It should be brought back just like Designing Women. GCB is a great show with great writers, great actresses and actors. The stations will keep these dumb reality shows where people yell at each other and show no respect for one another and cancel a show like GCB that really entertains and makes people LAUGH OUT LOUD!!!
My husband and I LOVE this show and as an actor he can’t believe they canceled a show with such stellar acting. Annie Potts deserves an Emmy for the 10 episodes and we hope another network sees the potential with this amazing tv show!! Let’s save GCB!!!
I love this show! So well written, great characters! Best show in a Long time! Can’t believe it’s canceled! ABC please reconsider!
SAVE THE GCB!!

Really sad to see the show go! It’s been A LONG time since I’ve heard SO MANY people talk about a show! At work, social settings, etc…..If you mentioned GCB…peoples faces just lit up and a lively fun conversation ensued! I truly hope that the Whackadoodle Religious Zealots didn’t have anything to do with the decision….but I guess if I were ABC and had to decide between two equal shows and one had whackadoodles bothering me……I might choose the other just because it was easier. AGAIN….I’m really sad to see the show go….it would be nice if another network or… Read more »
I am so bummed about this! I loved this show more and more each week. The characters were all so random and hilarious. It really shined a comedic light on a part of society that people seem to be afraid to confront on TV– hypocritical Christians in America! I’m a Christian and I was born and raised in the South and I was never offended by the show! It was just poking a little fun. I love crime drama as much as the next girl, but this show was actually a little glimmer of light in all the depressing shows… Read more »
BOO ABC! Shame on you. This show was great I hope another network picks these girls up and runs with them. A network that is not afraid of rubbing a few people the wrong way! No lady ever got any where by sitting by quietly, while backing down scared of the opposition.
Hard to believe that we finally had a funny, enjoyable show and you want to take it away and leave us with what, more crap? We finally had a show that simply allowed us to enjoy an hour of laughs and getting to see how funny GCB could be. I guess I would be considered one and I can laugh and enjoy seeing the humor in how the characters played together and just have one hour of enjoyment. Take this away and we can always turn to another channel and learn how to boil water…
Love the show. This sucks!!!!
REALLY they canceled GCB and kept scandal that piece of **** show with horrible acting!!! This is ridiculous GCB was my new favorite show and all my friends had just started to get into it, it would have taken off if they gave it more time and renewed it!,….very dissapointed.
GCB was surprisingly refreshing to the same old programming on TV. I’m a christian and I wasn’t offended, I actually found it interesting the character’s belief in god and how it was a strong part of the show. It’s entertainment. ABC should really reconsider this cancellation! Whatever happened to allowing a show to mature and flourish? GCB was a great show, I found myself enjoying the show more with each new episode. We were just beginning to know the characters too…
I totally agree.
This show was good clean fun & it really burns me that it’s been cancelled – Personally I feel that some people just couldn’t handle what what seemed to be a (slightly overdone) dose of reality as I truly believe that most fanatical church goers are just as screwed up & hypocritical as these characters seemed to be. Gotta love those crazy Republicans don’t you? Got many laughs from their antics as the show was truly addictive and think that it’s cancellation had more to do with making the church LOOK BAD than it’s ratings. ABC, quit trying to be… Read more »
