Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
I am so thoroughly dissappointed that the ONLY show we watch on ABC has been canceled. No wonder it was picking up attendance slowly (just not fast enough to keep, apparently) because most of the viewers that had started tuning were those, like me, that had stopped watching ABC. So, it was taking too much time to come back — too bad, poor choice to cancel as far as I’m concerned. Just lost another ABC viewer. Hopefully another network will pick it up!!!
I enjoyed thd show and was getting into thd character development. There are alotore offensive prigrc on TV. Bring it back
Very disappointed in GCW being cancelled. Please reconsider as the show gave strong interesting female characters. Hopefully ABC is not being swayed by religious groups but instead will listen to viewers who found the show over the top and FUNNY! And, if truth be told, the show was not that far off from the shenanigans going on in a large numbers of churches – the main reason that I do not attend any church – people looking all perfect and pious a few hours one day a week. Even have a daughter who goes to church, has adopted children from… Read more »
I think I am done watching network television. The disappointment that I am constantly subjected to is too much to bear. I adored this show. I looked forward to it very week and now it is gone. Why do tv networks cancel good, well written shows while they renew crappy, stupid ones? I used to watch several TV shows regularly, however, this year three of the six shows I regularly watch are cancelled (the finder, pan am and GCB). I think I am done watching new tv shows. Tv networks SUCK!
Love this show. Im a christian – a Baptist, too – and I still love it. people are always saying you need to learn to laugh at yourself. I agree. Same for religion sometimes. I dont think this show was making fun of all Christians…just the ones that we all know exist in churches. And that ‘going back to high school’ is so true in small communities. Some folks never make it past those years. just a funny show. And i love annie potts in anything.
Initially I found the title a bit abrasive(not offensive) , however the substance of the show proved to be witty, entertaining and story lines were quite clever . Hopefully ABC will get a clue I’m disappointed with them back to Detroit 187. SOOO Over them jerking good shows off the air every other day(or so it seems). I certainly hope that they didn’t pull it because of pressure from the judgmental (and sorry to say… up tight) Christians. I can speak only for myself as a Christian, that some of them are B….s! Clean up your own back yard and… Read more »
Do not cancel this shows. It is a wonderfully witty show that realy gives good advice for handling situations in a fun quirky way. It will be a huge loss to your already declining lineups. If you need to shuffle it to another day.
MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!!! BRING IT BACK!!!
Im really disappointed that gcb is cancelled what are we going to watch since desperate housewives is off.? I really enjoyed the show and I did not find the tittle defensive
I have absolutely disappointed to hear that GCB is not being renewed, my whole family loves this show, and feels that it gives us something good to watch other than “Once Upon A Time” on Sunday nights! In fact, we record it so that our daughter can watch the show. This is very upsetting that ABC is cancelling the show, even though I am really interested in Scandal, I would rather see GCB renewed over Scandal if it came down to it. We were faithful followers of “Brothers & Sisters” & were very sad to see that show cancelled, &… Read more »
Very Disappointed in ABC’s decision. This was a great show and so different than the same old cop show or reality show. I think it was on an upswing too people were really starting to talk about it.
ABC is slowly but surely becoming my least favorite network. First Pan Am and now GCB. I am sick to death of them cancelling really good, fun and innovative shows. Finally they were putting on shows that were different from the norm and not more silly and lame “reality shows”. GCB was seriously funny and I looked forward to it on Sunday evenings. So now there’s no Desperate Housewives or GCB…you better have something really, really spectacular up your sleeves ABC.
Honestly disappointed. Desperate housewives was one of the best shows that me and my girls watched we loved watching once upon a time
Desperate housewives and then to top it off we had gcb to wrap up the night. It was a great Sunday for a while please bring it back on just one more season.
LOVED GCB very different and funny, I enjoyed it and looked forward to each and every episode. Please say it aint so. bring it back for the fans! I didnt even block out the advertising 🙂
I done with ABC. Blocked off of our TV. My wife blew a gasket about Dancing with the Stars, but she’ll get over it.
