Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
This is the ONLY show that my husband and watched together!
If it was meant to fill the void of Desperate Housewives, why not give it that timeslot? It seems that the networks are throwing more unscripted,i.e. cheaper trash at us. If I hear of one more title withe the word “celebrity” in it I will gag.
This was a bad, bad decision.
Is there a petition to bring it back? Where do I sign?
I LOVEDDD this show. Very sad to see it end.
What the heck? One of the best new shows on TV and you yank it for a poor ratings score when clearly some of your other shows deserve to be cancelled well before this one. I hope someone at ABC has enough sense to re-think this.
I used to be a religious Protestant. Some of the hypocrisy showed on GCB was spot on and is one reason I am a flaming atheist.
I cant believe GCB was cancelled and Body of Proof, which I actually watch and whose ratings were worse, wasnt.
I hope ABC didnt cave in to Christians on this.
This is the same network that kept “According to Jim” on the air for 8 years, despite poor ratings the last 6n years it was on. Belushi must have had some dirty pictures of at least one ABC executive
This show was so funny. Anybody can see it was in good fun. I think it was satirical and not ridiculing. The actors had chemistry between them. It was a shame to cancel it. I think it was catching on. ABC should rethink this one.
I loved this show!!!! I can’t believe it was cancelled! That’s why I don’t watch this network, every time they have a good show going they cancell it!
I am a Christian, and I love this show!!! Perhaps it hit to close to home for those who objected to it. It was humorous, entertaining, and could make you think!!! Such talented actors and good script writting. ABC got this wrong, I think that I will not watch anything on ABC again. They let the narrow minded people win, what a shame.
I can’t believe this show is cancelled!! I love, love, love this show! I was so excited to see how it continued. It was my new favorite show and I got other people hooked on it. ABC please bring it back!!
is there any possibility another network will pick it up??? i will definitely miss this show! looked forward to it every week! it was witty and fun and did not offend this Christian whatsoever!
To paraphrase Jerry Seinfeld, I wasn’t offended by the show as a Christian so much as by the sheer awfulness of the show.
Both me and my Husband loved GCB, and looked forward to the new season…figures…all the good shows get cancelled…soon I won’t have to pay for cable because there won’t be anything to watch!
That show should have DEFINITELY been renewed. I read it was on the edge but was cancelled because of Christian organizations.
Can’t understand why the good ones alway get cancelled???!!! GCB, Missing and the River??? Unbelievable – whoever is in charge of programing should be cancelled!
I’m sad at you ABC! GCB rocks and I’m gonna miss it.
This is really too bad! Loved the show! It was nice to laugh like that each week! Booooo ABC!
