Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
LOVED GCB! It was HILARIOUS! I will be sad to see it go. Just as so many other awesome shows that do not get the credit they deserve. 🙁
I’m so confused about the choice to cancel Harry’s Law. I am a woman in the middle of the 18-49 demographic and I love watching Kathy Bates and Mark Valley. I hated seeing Human Target cancelled but Ollie makes it worth it.
I’m embarrassed. I was supposed to be talking about GCB but was typing while watching Harry’s Law. The same ideas apply though because I love watching David James Elliot. I AM a Christian and I have no problem with the show. What they depict is accurate of all the evangelicals I know, especially the ones from the south.
There is a petition on savegcb.com to bring the show back…maybe if enough of us speak up they will bring it back.
GCB was awesome…I want it back please!
GCB- bring it back!!!!
This was the first show I’ve watched on ABC in years. It was truly a funny, well-written sitcom. So long ABC in my household – again.
GCB is amazing!!! I hate that whenever a good show with cleaver writing is on TV, their networks cancel it. How do you renew Bachelor Pad or Bachelor and Bachelorette but not GCB. It is funny, up beat and hilarious. I am so disappointed in ABC for not renewing this show. The cast works so well together and it is good television.
You’re kidding me? This show is a hoot! I’m sooooo going to miss it.
What! I can’t believe it! Bring it back! I want my GCB! Who the heck is making all these sucky decisions at ABC? They cancelled some great shows and kept stinkers like Cougar Town (which isn’t funny anymore since there are no cougars on it and it needs a new name0), Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23? Or The Bachelor series (I know we’re all sick of that one…do these camera hugging freaks ever make it to happily ever after?) Then they come out with boring dramas like Missing, Scandal, and Revenge?!! YAWN, then change the channel in search… Read more »
Yet another of my favorite programs bites the dust because some religous fanatic groups decide to take offense. This is getting really old. How long is it going to be before they bring back the Inquisition of Old? They’re already subjecting our programming to it. All this talk about religous freedom…how about a little entertainment freedom? Besides, most “christian” people I know tell me they don’t even own a TV or allow their families to watch it. So why are they getting so huffy? Why are we having someone else’s moral attitudes rammed down our throats whether we like it… Read more »
Tell me what survey allows the thoughts and views of an 18 year old and a 49 year to be compared???? Dumb move ABC!!! I agree with Kathleen once Housewives is gone…onto GCB!!! Bring it back!!
I CANNOT beleive ABC cancelled this show! I was completely infatuated with it. Why do they cancel shows the minute they are starting to get good and draw an audience??? I swear if Pretty Little Liars ever gets cancelled im blocking ABC from my programming!!!! I will watch horrible FOX over this nonsense
I think that they should have come up with a season 2…..with Desperate Housewives ending I think that GCB would capture the Housewives audience!! I am very disappointed in the decision to cancel GCB! I could never get enough of these crazy girls!
I truly enjoyed GCB– It was my sunday night guilty pleasure! I hope another network will pick it up. At times, this show had me laughing so hard, I was crying. Sorry to see it go. Guess it will be “the Client List” on sundays…
You have got to be kidding me why didnt you try surveying the over 50 group oh thats right we don’t count… what a shame the show was witty, smart, and yes bitchy so what give…. your keeping Scandal… thats real life on the news we don’t need it in the entertainment arena too. Such as waste of good talent.
