Did Carlene finally take down Amanda? We’ll never know. ABC has cancelled GCB after one short season of 10 episodes. There won’t be a “second coming” or a second season for this show.
Based on the novel Good Christian Bitches, GCB follows a former high school mean girl (Leslie Bibb), now a single mom and widow, who returns home to Texas and tries to make amends with the women that she used to torment. The show’s ensemble cast also includes Lauran Irion, Colton Shires, Annie Potts, Kristin Chenoweth, David James Elliott, Jennifer Aspen, Brad Beyer, Miriam Shor, Mark Deklin, and Marisol Nichols.
This dramedy debuted to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demograpic with 7.56 million viewers. That wasn’t a great showing but it was far better than what ABC had been getting with Pan Am earlier in the season.

Most shows see their ratings decline in week two but GCB’s actually grew, a sign that there was some positive word of mouth helping the series.
Over the course of the show’s short season, the numbers fluctuated a bit but it ended up averaging a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.87 million viewers. On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative demo performance of shows on the network, GCB had a “C-” grade.
It was firmly “on the bubble” between a cancellation and a renewal but ABC ultimately decided to cancel it. A slightly-better rated bubble show, Scandal was renewed. If that new Shonda Rhimes series had done a bit worse, GCB might have been renewed.
As it is, GCB has been cancelled. Some Christians and organizations objected to the show as they felt the original title was demeaning to Christians. Some called for boycotts but its difficult to know if that had any impact on the ratings or the network.
The last episode of GCB aired on May 6th. It wasn’t intended as a series finale so some ongoing storylines were left unresolved.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that GCB has been cancelled and won’t be returning for season two? Do you think the show was demeaning to all Christians? Do you think the objections had an impact on ABC’s decision to cancel it?
Maybe ABC could replace GCB with something funny that isn’t so bigoted!!!!
GCB sucked! The jokes were stereotypically predictable. What a bore!
REALLY!!! This show was actually funny and you are taking it off. Why? Of course I’m still irritated that Pushing Daisies ended…Give GCB another chance!!!
GCB was so entertaining! My whole family looked forward to it every week. It was refreshing to see something besides a show about murders. Please give it another chance, just change the name so some people wont find it offensive. My family goes to church every week and we were certainly not offended by the name or the humor. We found it very enjoyable! Please bring it back!!
Very disappointed at the cancellation of another really entertaining show. I am very tired of the “reality” shows that are as far from real life it’s a joke! I hope the networks wise up and bring this show back. Incidentally, I’m 71 years old and I thought the show hilarious!
I am seriously angry right now. I could never imagine how much a t.v. show mean’t to me. GCB had a strong impact on my Sunday nights if you all would join me in not watching ABC for a while to let them know what their missing and put the show back on I also encourage you all to take part in GCB petitions online. This is a serious problem that needs to be changed!!!!
How could they? The funniest new show on tv in years! I can’t believe they canceled it. All of my friends love it, along with their hubbies, surprisingly. Had they given it another season it would have becone a top producer. I am sure of it!
They didn’t cancel Sopranos because it might have offended Italians. I know so many people just like these characters! It is a great show and hope someone else picks it up.
finally we get a great show that really makes us laugh an they go an shut it down. meanwhile a “reality” show gets picked up in its place or for another season. i am so sick an tired of those so called “reality shows” they are no ones reality an for the idiots out there that think they are watching REAL LIFE drama. here is a “reality check” for you IT IS FAKE!!! IT IS SCRIPTED!!!! ABC,CBS,NBC an everyone else out there PLEASE for all of our sakes please bring back the old shows an quit canceling winners like GCB

What in the world????!!!! This was the best show this network has offered us in years! WOW! Even my Sundays are opening up now.
Ok, don’t know how I submitted that…
As long as they don’t completely mess up the show, any other network out there would be a winner if they scooped this up. I certainly hope that we have not seen the last of this show that honestly was like no other. Even my kids liked it, and they are not usually into these sort of shows.
Man I’m so upset! I love that show! I give up everytime I like a show they cancel it!!!!
I can’t believe ABC cancelled my favorite new show!! Why can’t networks gives shows a chance to get off the ground anymore? Didn’t cheers almost get cancelled after a season or two, I mean really, GCB is the funniest new show on t.v. right now, I love these ladies. Please, tell me another network will be smart enough to pick this show up! Someone start a petition!
The show is ingenious with a great cast that has wonderful chemistry. Being a Christian, I knew that this was not intended to be offensive, but educational as there is always a lesson embedded in each show. The characters have difficulty living Christian principals, just like many of us, and go through their trials and tribulations, trying to tie their decisions to faith and in the end, the ‘lesson’ still holds true. The network should have thought this through more thoroughly as this was a show that was entertaining while carrying a message about what it is to be a… Read more »
