Some not-so-great-news for The Great Indoors. Today, CBS announced they’ve cancelled the TV series after only one season.
The sitcom follows an adventurous magazine reporter (Joel McHale). His world is turned upside down when the magazine goes online-only and he’s assigned to head the digital department. The cast also includes Stephen Fry, Susannah Fielding, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Shaun Brown, Christine Ko, and Chris Williams.
Ratings have been a struggle for The Great Indoors over the course of its first season. When the show debuted in October, it brought in a strong rating of 1.91 in the 18-49 demo and 8.814 million viewers. However, by the time the sitcom ended in May, the series finale brought in a 0.70 rating in the 18-49 demo and only 3.905 million viewers. That’s a significant drop.
Not to mention. CBS moved the show from Thursday to Monday nights in the middle of its freshman season—not a good sign. When we asked viewers if The Great Indoors should be cancelled or renewed, only 73% voted for a renewal. That’s a majority, but only a few hundred voters participated. It looks like CBS didn’t think The Great Indoors was great enough to keep around.
What do you think? Did you watch The Great Indoors? Do you think it should’ve been renewed?
Loved the show!
Movie Joel McHale! We need you in more movies!
This show deserves a season 2 i thought the script was crafty. I remember being sick and watching the first episode. I laughed so hard and even though my body was sick, mentally i was relaxed!
It needs Season 2.
Yes!! Please give it another chance with a second season!! A refreshingly different kinda sitcom!
Show was often weak … but I watched it anyway.
McHale really deserves a break … I’d watch him read Shakespeare … for the smart-ass editorial he’d no doubt throw in.
Thank you for bringing this sad mess to a quick end. Someone has just got to find Joel McHale the right vehicle.
I really enjoyed the show. Really made me laugh. Each person brought something to the show. With that said, if they are really certain about ending the series, I would hope that the powers that be in Hollywood take note of these fine actors and actresses, and find them roles in their shows. (Yes I know their agents have to be involved too) I am glad I was able to enjoy the full season of funny though, and at least Clark got his kiss. I will miss Ester. She was the perfect amount of “Ester.”
I enjoyed the show, but I think one big issue was not enough Stephen Fry. He was barely there for a bunch of the episodes.
I agree. I think less Christine Ko (she came across at times as a ‘very bad’ actress, and just a ‘bad’actress the rest) and more Steven Fry would have definitely helped the show.
You are correct. When he used “Kirkland Signature” as a name for a vodka luring Jack to have a drink with him was priceless. That joke alone deserved a second season.
Loved it! great ensemble cast. Should have been given a chance at a second season! They kept Superior Donuts and canceled this? Really? Too bad for The Great Indoors…. 🙁
The only couple of episodes I saw of this were pretty not good. Not surprised it’s getting the ax. There’s a place for Joel McHale on prime time. This isn’t it.
I believe there was a problem ‘behind the scenes’ because this performed much better than shows like ‘Man With a Plan’ & ‘Superior Donuts’ SO WEIRD, this obviously wasn’t the best, but it was one of the better fates on CBS.
iPhone changed ‘fares’ to ‘fates’, to anyone left wondering. At least we were introduced to Christine Ko, I hope she has a successful career ahead of her. She deserves it!
This was a horrible show. Not surprised at all.
This show was the BEST of the “newcomers” in the 16/17 season. CBS is definitely WRONG TO CANCEL IT. I hope some other “less successful” network noticed its potential and picks it up. The cast is absolutely delightful, but the quick “inside” jokes were apparently too subtle for today’s “target” (read: “dumbed-down, under-educated”) audience. I wish a certain person hadn’t ruined the word “Sad.”…
I enjoyed the show. It was a good comedy up against so many awful reality shows, which I don’t watch any of them, Im really sorry to see this show go.
