The journey has ended. If you haven’t heard the news, Netflix has cancelled Marco Polo after only two seasons of 10 episodes each. All of the second season episodes (including the defacto series finale) were released on July 1, 2016. A Christmas special aired last year.
The historical drama, which was initially developed for Starz, follows the early years of the famous 13th-century explorer as he travels through the Mongol Empire. The cast includes Lorenzo Richelmy, Rick Yune, Benedict Wong, Claudia Kim, Remy Hii, Olivia Cheng, Mahesh Jadu, Tom Wu, Gabriel Byrne, and Michelle Yeoh.
Netflix doesn’t release “ratings” for their programming but, because the show has been cancelled, one can guess that they didn’t feel like ordering a third season made good financial sense. That doesn’t mean, however, that the series didn’t have its fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, season two has a 94% approval rating.
What do you think? Should Netflix have ordered season three of their Marco Polo TV series? Would you have watched? Was two seasons enough?
I watched Marco Polo in 2016 and again in 2020. I thought historically. It was wanting
But that’s movie land for you. I would certainly watch season 3
Marco Polo is by far one of their best originals, they actually have a few really good ones, off the top of my head I think of Altered Carbon, Nightflyers, The Last Kingdom, The OA and of course Marco Polo. The problem is that back then they didn’t advertise their originals as well as they do now and barely anybody had even heard of shows like Marco Polo or the OA, and so naturally they lost money on them. Another issue is that they were shows that took a while to show how good they really were, hell the OA… Read more »
I for one would have loved to see a season 3 of marco polo. I love historical dramas. I wish Netflix would renew for season 3 and that would be the final installment. Please guys……think of how many people enjoy this show and makes them happy to watch. Shouldn’t that count for something?
I watched this back when it first came out n followed it into season 2. Killed me that they canceled it do to lose of money. Honestly I thought it was amazing and rating cites hold this show in high regards. Started re-re-rewatching it again lately n I beg you Netflix please renew this amazing show!
I just finished watching “Marco Polo”. I thought it was a new show as I hadn’t noticed it until recently. Is it too late to do a third season? I want to know what happened. You left us with a massive cliff hanger.
I’m so mad at Netflex!! I loved this series-it only got better and better with each episode-I was tempted to discontinue watching -still considering. Please bring back season three if only to wrap it up and provide a satisfying conclusion!
Its January 2020, I just binged watched marco polo and man!!! I can’t believe this show got canceled! It’s up there with game of thrones! I was expecting a season 3 after i watch to find out this show got canceled years ago!! What a shame!! This cast of actors was marvelous!
Absolutely! Who wouldn’t? There isn’t a whole lot to watch based off the time and setting of Marco Pollo! 100 eyes is totally awesome!! I loved the series and am very upset that they cancelled I would definetly watch a third season and more. They have to make a third season they can’t just leave it at how it ended. Still so many un answered questions!
Especially at this point in history, politics and culture, this series both educated and entertained. But perhaps because it was so fact laden, it was politically incorrect to continue illuminating history. Great acting, casting, research, set design, everything.
I would have watched a 3rd and most probably much more if it kept delivering like it did.
Great show with outstanding characters and beautiful locations. Of course that means it gets cancelled for less expensive TV drivel.
This show was fantastic, I am so saddened it was not picked up for a 3rd season. We have so much of the same trash on TV, this show was unique with great, great actors.
I’m so pissed, I absolutely loved this show if they did a third season and only released it on DVD/bluray I’d buy it. This show has a great combination of historical characters and creative license, it’s beautifully visually stimulating. Netflix has a bunch of other programming that’s near worthless, cancel that garbage and keep this wonderful show, or sell it to some other company with vision. Everybody I’ve recommended this show to absolutely loved it. In fact one of the people I recommended it to gave me the news of it’s cancellation and expressed their disappointment. I’m really disappointed in… Read more »
I agree! When I found ‘Marco Polo’ I decided to keep Netflix, I had grown tired of the network seems like an endless sea of worthless programming. I don’t believe every film has to be high budget, but it seems more and more the network has turned bleak. I don’t mind reading some subtitles if I choose to watch a foreign film. Now it seems every other movie is in anything but english. I’m sure some would consider me shallow, I’m an American paying for an American streaming service. These days any film maker right of Joseph Stalin or Chairman… Read more »
Yes, we would have watched it and we are very sorry that Netflix cancelled a third series.
