Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I didn’t realize I was catching the last episode, so the death of Joe was kind of a shock. I felt sad because I have always thought those two portrayed a realistic and loving relationship between a husband and wife. It was an excellent episode but I don’t think it needed to end in such a sad way. I think I would have liked to have seen about 10 minutes of the actors talking about their characters, the show, their relationships with each other and their future projects.
Love this show! will miss it very much. Hated that they had Joe die, but loved the end when he was there waiting for her!
The demise of the show will leave a void for me. The show did an excellent job creating a family that didn’t seem to be from the writers imagination, but a look into the the lives of people that became real for an hour every week. I hope the production people along with the actors realize how much fans like myself appreciated the quality that was presented.
I’ll miss you guy’s.
i loved the show medium. i was saddened at the last episode. i really enjoyed watching it.
I am still sad from watching this episode. I hadn’t realized it would be the last one. My heart is raw from it. Joe was my favorite character, and their marriage represented a sort of ideal for me, so when he died——-at first I didn’t believe it. Convinced myself it must be another dream episode. Then, to find that he really was dead, that the grief would be fresh and new………oh, heartbreaking.
Bravo to every cast member, and thank you all for many entertaining years. And I hope to see Mr. Weber on screen again soon!
I hated to see this show end. Still don’t understand why such a great show ends and
silly reality shows stay on. I will miss it.
I loved the end show. I think it dealt with the emotions that viewers might go thru with
the ending of this show. Very good insight. I first did not like Joe dying. However, did
like the ending with Joe and Allison being together forever.
please PUT THE SHOW BACK ON. COME ON FANS PROTEST.
I found the finale very disturbing. Allison and Joe had such a wonderful relationship and by killing Joe off, Allison was left alone and her young daughters were left without a loving father. Another thing that wasn’t well thought out was how old Allison would be in 41 years – I reckoned about 82 to 85 years old which is still fairly young and she wouldn’t just die sitting in a chair. I’m going to miss this series. I suppose it was too much to expect an intelligent show about a functional family to last.
OMG! I am super sad about Medium being canceled, what a GREAT show. All of Patricia Arquettes work is superb. I’ve never cried over a series finale, like I did with this show. I also have to say, that I had a HUGE crush on Det.Scanlon, lol. The real Allison Dubious wrote a book that I would suggest everyone read..
Thanks for a great 7 seasons, Scarlet !!
I hate that this show ended, it always kept my mind interested, I am not ready for it to end, I was interested in the way the characters were growing and progressing
A little untralistic at time, but what could one expect with a gifted family ?
The last session was a surprise, because I didn’t realize it was the last session, but it was well written and preformed…
Really sorry to see the show end; however, I thought the ending was well done. I’ve loved watching for the past several years. Have not seen the earlier episodes. I will miss all the characters a lot.
I hated it! I don’t care that Allison and Joe got to be together again after 41 years…it left me with the terrible knowledge that she and her daughters had to go through their whole lives without him. Why did the finale have to be about such devastating loss? I have watched the show from the beginning and actually really enjoyed it. I was so glad that CBS picked it up and couldn’t understand why NBC let it go. I too loved the dynamic between Allison and Joe. Honestly, though, after seeing the real Allison DuBois recently on a reality… Read more »
Love the show and the finale was great except it was so sad. I wish is was possible to leave an opening to have some future shows. I will certainly miss this show.
I was surprised, didn’t know it was the last show, made me double sad. I think that since the REAL Dubois was seen being an obnoxious cow on the housewives of beverly hills that I was really dissapointed, I like Patricia Arquette better than the real deal. The Real Alysson has been gobbled up by fame and a pride for herself that is beyond attractive….
I’ll really miss the show, NOW THERE’S NO TV SHOW ABOUT YOU ALYSSON DUBOIS, wow, people might forget you….
I’m a bit heart broken – I love the show, have been a faithful viewer and had no idea when I was watching last nights episode that it was the series finale. I was even sad when I got up this morning as I don’t have too many shows that I really enjoy. I will indeed miss Medium. Loved Joe & Allison’s relationship.
Loved the final episode!! Thank you so much for letting the characters say good bye to us the loyal viewers. We will miss our Friday nights with Medium!!!
