Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

It hurt to see my fave show go, but I thought it went out in true Medium fashion. I am pleased with the ending, NOT that it ended. But who is ever happy when their favorite show ends?……NO ONE!
THE ONLY GOOD SHOW ON FRIDAY NIGHT BESIDES CSI NY..
WHY DO YOU PUT ALL THE GOOD SHOWS ON THE SAME TIME AS OTHER STATIONS HAVE THEIR PROVEN SUCCESSFUL SHOWS.
I WATCH TV ON WEEKENDS OR SHOULD I SAY I WOULD IF SOMETHING WERE ON.. SO INSTEAD I WATCH MOVIES.
Words can not express how I feel. I am both upset and disappointed that the show has been cancelled. This was a great show and will truly be missed.
WTH HAPPENED IN THE LAST Forty five fears of Allison’s life?? What have her girls become? Is the youngest a Medium who charges big money to talk to the dead?? Is Arial really a lawyer and the ATA?? .Who did all the girls marry ,did they have boy’s and girls. did each girl name one of there boys JO??? or josephine?? WE NEED AT LEAST A Six hour three PART special to fill in all the blanks that tell us what happened over the next forty two years of Medium. Each two hour movie will cover fourteen years in Allison’s… Read more »
Watched every episode over the seven years, so last night was like saying goodbye to the Walton family – so poignant, and very well done. I’m glad Joe was killed off, because it brought closure for me. So long, Alison Dubois, and thanks for one of the best dramas and families to ever hit the TV signals. I’ll miss you.
It was bittersweet — I love all the characters and really didn’t want to see anyone die. Then the freaking TWC went out and I didn’t have to! It came back on just in time for me to see everyone wave goodbye. I’ll miss Medium and hope the last episode will be on Hulu so I can watch it.
I was suprised to see the show end, have watched the show from the beginning. I will miss this one.
It was a sad thing for the show to go, but it was a good ending.. I wish you would bring it back, maybe try another night..
Sorry to see the show end! I was a faithful fan for years. The last show was good but short and bittersweet (should have been a two hour show). I was sorry to see Joe die. Please bring the Medium back!!!!
Sad to see Allison die suddenly and alone in an assisted living facility. (shed a few tears)
Happy to see Joe & Allison reunited in the afterlife.
Sad to see Medium come to an end.
I am very upset medium is off the air. The stories were consistently well written and performed. I looked forward to each new episode.
Let’s be honest… I cried a lot. I loved this TV show, am very sad about the end… but hey, the love between Allison and Joe was so strong, I do think it was a good idea to end this great show. Will miss the DuBois a lot…
Why did it have to end? There were endless story lines with Bridget and Marie and Alison’s brother that could have kept this series going for many years. I am so disappointed! I have watched every episode since the beginning. I was so blindsided by this turn of events. I had no idea they were even THINKING about dropping it. I really hope a public outcry will change minds.
i really hated to see the show end and it was sad to see joe die, but this was the first series whose ending i loved whereas all others have left you hanging and/or possed off-sad to see it end-gonna miss it! but i have all seasons onl dvd so i can still watch reruns anytime i want
Like many others, I had no idea this was the series finale! I can’t believe I actually got teary-eyed over this, but I really liked everyone on the show, and I love Patricia Arquette, she is awesome. I enjoyed the relationship that she and Joe portrayed. Shame on you, CBS. I hope some cable network at least picks it up and we can see reruns!!
