Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I really did not care for the ending. It just seemed too final. The entire series really focused on the relationship between Allison and Joe and to have him die just seemed unfair to the viewers. I wonder if the ending had anything to do with the fact that the actress (Patricia) and her husband are divorcing??? The real Allison and her husband are fine, and it would have been nice if the show continued to mirror the real life of the real Allison. I have to say I cried. I have been watching since the first episode and it… Read more »
Hated the final episode. Love the show and they should have stuck to the real life story. If Joe is still alive in real life why kill him off. I am sure the real guy was not too happy about it. I am so tired of series ending on a sad note for once can’t everything work out after all it is television and the writers can do whatever they want.
Why did they take off my favorite show?
What a disappointment!
The ending was really unique and touching but my problem is, I lovedthe show and never missed it. Well, life goes on. Or not.
I thought this was the best ending to a show, the writers did a great job, we know that Allyson and Joe will be together throughout eternity.
Medium, why would you cancel one of the best telvision shows ?????
This is very sad!!!! One of my favorite shows. They have had so many clever story lines over the years it will be tough to do without. Hopefully it will be back. Anything is possible. That whole episode could have been a dream. Who knows – maybe in a year or two another network will pick up the show and the new show will open with us finding out that Allison was really married to Bob Newhart (with Bobby Ewing in their shower).
The episode was very good. Sad to see Medium go. Was one of my favorite shows.
I was really taken off-guard by the show’s ending – I hadn’t heard a thing! It was one of my favorite shows, primarily because it was so different from the run-of-the-mill comedy or drama shows, and I loved the family dynamic. My husband & I will miss it!!
I am so sad to see the show go. Although I liked this episode I was shocked to see how it ended. Medium will be truly missed.
I was sooo completely stunned!! This is my number one gotta see show!! Now what will it be?? I had no idea the show was ending and wish with all my heart there was a way to change it…
Love the interaction of the family. Loved the way Alisons dreams came to her and how she was able to help so many others!!
When I sat down to watch Medium last night, I was not aware that it had been cancelled. Slowly, I realized that it was the series finale. I’m very sorry to see it go, but I thought it was well done. I wonder, however, how Allison managed all those years without Joe’s level headed practicality.
Sad that a great show ends, but sooner or later they all do. This was a perfect ending. The entire theme of the show was carried thru in this one last episode. Not an edge of seat show but it leaves you feeling that all is well with Alison’s world. We’ll miss this one!!!
I really enjoyed the episode, and hate that this is the end of a great show. All of the actors were so natural – they interacted like a normal family should. The only thing I didn’t like about the show was the graphic murder scenes…a little too much. BUT….overall it was one of the best shows on TV and I NEVER missed an episode! I cried like a baby at the end….because it was so touching and heart-wrenching, and also because it was the last show…………..Please bring it back somehow……………………………………….. (and I don’t mean re-runs!)
Didn’t like the show because of Joe’s death. Allison and all three daughters are psychic and help strangers but not one of them had a dream that could have prevented Joe’s death? Besides the psychic plot Medium was a family show for its portrayal of a complicated but loving family. Joe and Allison’s relationship was the cornerstone of the family and killing him off was like a slap in the face.
