Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I’ve watched the show since day one and have never missed an episode. I loved this show. I was also shocked that it was the last episode. I did not hear that it was being canceled. Weird. I guess all good things have to come to an end eventually. I’m just glad I got to see 7 years of a really good show. Not many left out there. The last episode was true to form though. Except maybe for fast forwarding so long (7 years, and 41 years), but how else were they suppose to do it? I really liked… Read more »
I was shocked and saddened when I realized I had just watched the last episode of Medium. I will miss every character dearly. I really loved that show and as usual one of the good ones is cancelled. Good luck to the cast and crew.
horrible ending, I cannot stop thinking about Joe being dead. Medium was my favorite show, I got so much happiness from watching their happy little family, and now I am still so sad that Joe is dead!! WHY KILL JOE?? What purpose did that serve? Really disappointed the show is ending, and even more dissappointed in HOW it ended. What a let down.
Loved you all like a part of my family. The end came too sudden, I was not ready for that. I guess, Mr.Raitings, this show was not explicit enough for you?
I hate to see medium cancelled it is one of the few shows that is murder, jail, rape etc it is interesting and informative and something good to watch. I think it should be a bad dream and stay on
I TOO, WAS COMPLETELY SHOCKED WHEN THE ANNOUNCER SAID; “STAY TUNED FOR SCENES OF MEDIUM SERIES FINALE” I HAVE DVD-R AND HAD TO REWIND TWICE TO BE SURE I HEARD CORRECTLY. PLEASE BRING THE SHOW BACK….. THE WRITERS CAN HAVE THE WHOLE THING BE ANOTHER “DREAM” AND JOE IS ALIVE, ETC…. THE FINALE EPISODE, IN MY OPINION, WAS TERRIBLE… NOT THE ACTORS, BUT THE WHOLE IDEA AND WRITING OF IT. JOE DYING, FAST FORWARD 7 YEARS, THEN JOE’S ALIVE, THEN JOE’S DEAD, THEN 41 YEARS LATER ALLISON DIES AND REUNITES WITH JOE. IN ONE EPISODE, LESS THAN AN HOUR, THE… Read more »
What a shocker! I’d heard nothing about the series ending and it was one of the few shows I can stand to watch. Who wants reality shows? We LIVE in reality; why add to it??? On the other hand, the writers did a good job and kept me watching the episode with gusto!
I am just heartbroken about the series finale. I don’t understand why the writers would choose to go in that direction. Allison and Joe completed each other and the fact that they made her wait 41 years later to die so she could be with him just plain out sucked. This series could have ended much better and on a happy note. To be honest I don’t know if I can ever watch a rerun episode again knowing how it all turns out in the end. I loved this show and I have been a devoted fan every season and… Read more »
I CRIED LIKE A BABY WHEN JOE DIED. I CRIED FOR AN HOUR EVEN AFTER THE SHOW HAD WENT OFF. HOW CAN YOU TAKE THIS WONDERFUL SHOW AND CAST AWAY FROM US? ALL I SEE COMING ARE LOUSY SICKENING REALITY SHOWS (WHICH I DO NOT AND REFUSE TO EVER WATCH) AND THEN I HAD ALLISON AND JOE AND THE KIDS AND THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY AND LEE SCANLON TO LOOK FORWARD TO-PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS SHOW FROM US!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!! I AM BEGGING YOU!!!!!!!!
A wonderful series that was a part of my life -it was here as I was searching for answers that led me to Mrs Dubois ‘ books – OUTSTANDING actors and I will greatly miss our time on Friday nights. Blessings to Patricia. Jake. Miguel. & all
The final episode was all at once, funny, sad, euphoric, melancholy and as usual, a complete freak out. Bravo, Medium creators!
Allison had to deal with other’s deaths and losses the entire series run. That she should have to face the same fate, that we ALL do eventually, makes this show and it’s characters even more real to it’s fans.
The imagined pain she and her family went through is awful, but the ending ultimately was indeed, a happy one.
Can’t see why they decided to kill Joe. Loved the show, wish it could go on, but all good things come to an end. Still, why leave a bitter taste ??? Why not leave the DuBois family to live quietly & happly ever after??
The finale was a bit confusing at first, but all of the Medium episodes make perfect sense at the end. It was fitting to have Allison and Joe end the show together…great episode. Thank you to the cast, crew, writers, etc. for a great show. I am one of many, many fans and will miss the series, but will definitely never forget it. I hope the main message of the show was clear that there is life after death. For those in the cast…good luck on your future endeavors and know that there are many of us out there who… Read more »
