Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I was shocked that it was the end. I do not feel satisfied that Allison and Joe, one of the great modern television love stories, spent most of their lives separated. At the very least, Joe should have been around the whole time as a ghost, not standing around waiting and watching and out of sight, as was implied. I would have greatly preferred a less dramatic show as the last one. A minor problem and all the family together. Allison and Joe together through the years.
I loved the finale episode. I will miss the show very very much, although the way it ended was the best I have ever seen a show end. I loved the closure. I did not know that it was the finale episode, which made it rather shocking as the storyline unfolded, however the ending was GREAT. I loved seeing the family grow through pictures and the message to great grandma and then the REUNION after Allison dies 41 years later was great. IF we could all leave here and land in the arms and lips of our greatest love…awe…was a… Read more »
I want Medium to return. It was the top rated show in it’s time slot. I don’t understand why it was cancelled. Not everyone like or watches reality TV. Medium was a great series, well written, great acting. I hated the ending. The real Joe, didn’t die, why did they have to kill of Joe. They had canelled the series why couldn’t they just have a happily everafter. Did they do this so the fans couldn’t try to get it back. Well get real, we still want Medium back on the air. Just do a re-write and have Allison wake… Read more »
I loved the show and will miss it dearly. All the cast members were very good in their roles. However, I found the killing of Joe to be rather disappointing. As viewers we all saw the man having to traverse the “extraordinary” gifts of his family. He managed to live through it all and remain sane. You have to give the man credit! You would think that the writers would have given this man a happy ending. He was unemployed, went into partnership with a lunatic, had a host of crazy bosses but remained faithful to his family, life and… Read more »
This last episode of Medium was like a nightmare. I kept waiting for Allison to wake up and change things. I couldn’t believe this was the end of the series. I’m going to surely miss this show. It was one of the few shows I watched on Friday night.
I’m kinda pissed off. I didn’t know it was ending. I never read the title of the episodes or watch previews because I like to see the stories unfold without knowing anything ahead of time. So I was having my own reality check when Joe woke Allison from her dream. I DVR a lot of shows and sometimes they may sit there for up to 3 weeks before I get around to watching them, but, not this show. I loved it and I will really miss it. 🙁
I am still reeling from the shock
I really loved the series and all the characters so i shall be so sad not to be able to see more
I certaily would have liked that one to be a dream and for me to be able to watch it next week
It was a poigniant end. The only way it could have ended, touching and beautifully.
Plus the way each of the characters waved and thanked everyone was a delight. My heart goes out to each and everyone of them as they look to future endeavors, but I shall always remember the family that entered my home each week and delivered such grand entertainment.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I shall certainly miss the Dubois family.
I thought the season finale was great. I hate to see the show go away. I have loved the show since its first episode on NBC. I still want more Medium. I wonder if they finished other episodes before they decided to cancel? If so, I hope a network will pick them up and show them. I guess I just hate to see the show go away. I enjoyed the slient good-bye from each cast member at the end; goodbye Mr. District Attorney, Lee, Marie, Bridgette, Ariel, Joe and Allison.
Im upset about the cancellation and I really do not like the way it ended knowing too, that she can dream the future, how come she didn’t predict about what’s going to happen to Joe. I know that everybody dies but because of the nature of the show, they still can manipulate the next season as just a bad dream and make it like a whole lot of streamline of episodes since Brigette can see the future and Marie can dream so many things -esp. Ariel… Hey. whoever created this is brilliant and beautiful…. I Love it, im such a… Read more »
Im upset about the cancellation and I really do not like the way it ended knowing too, that she can dream the future, how come she didn’t predict about what’s doing to happen to Joe I wish it will continue again and make the last episode…. I think its the best show ever, since she has that capability to predict and see, the writers can also create a beautiful new season and make that last episode all but a bad dream….. Whoever wrote this scripts, I applaud you its very beautiful my kind of series. I’m such an avid fan…… Read more »
: ( I am so sad that it is over. It was so unexpected! I didn’t realize until the end that I was watching the series finale! I wish that the networks would create more wholesome shows like this one. Shows that depict a healthy family where the husband and wife love and respect one another, where the husband and wife are still happily married and love their children and have healthy perspectives on life. (I know, there was the whole seeing dead people in dreams thing, but…) This was a great show! I miss it and am sad to… Read more »
I was also surprised that this was the last episode. It never got to the “jumping the shark” point so I thought it would last a bit longer. I can say that with the let down of having one of my favorite shows cancelled that the final episode was a great goodbye and very satisfying. Thanks to the writers for a smooth jerking of the rug from under the fans’ feet. It didn’t devastate as much as it could have..: )
I had no idea that Medium was being cancelled. I absolutely loved the characters and their dynamics. The series finale is the saddest thing I’ve seen in a long time. Amazing how we get so attached to the characters. It would have been better if Joe had not been killed and the season closed off with everyone moving on with their lives.
It would be wonderful if it was brought back, but, after this last episode, not sure how that could be done. However, stranger things have happened and, I for one, would love to see the show return
I will miss this show enormously. I had no clue that this was the season finale! What a sad, sad ending–and yet, fitting. They met each other in the afterlife and will be together for all eternity. But why did it take her 7 years to hear from him? Allison was able to connect with dead people, why not Joe?
It didn’t take her 7 years to hear from him. The part about her being a lawyer was just a dream. The “real” part started when she woke from the dream, saw Joe who said he had really died and she had to learn to live with it. Then reality jumped ahead 41 years to the day she died. One of the best series finales I have ever seen. It tied everything up, that the kids grew up and got married etc., that Allison had lived a long, hopefully fulfilling life, and that in the end, hopefully the ones that… Read more »
You missed the point. He wasn’t dead 7 years that was the dream within a dream. He was showing her how successful she was going to be without him.
