Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

The finale is still haunting me…I can’t shake it. Now THAT was good emotional entertainment that had an impact.
There are so many people posting about the finale…why weren’t these people so vocal during the run of the show? That would have kept it alive for at least this full season instead of 13 eps….
This episode sucked! It sucks that the show is cancelled. It was my favorite show! Boo on CBS!
I’m in the UK. I found this show by accident. I love it so much. I have watched the finale but didn’t realise it was until at the end of the show. I’m “gobsmacked” that such a good program with life yet in it and with such good characters and actors. My husband did say perhaps that final episode could be a dream and another network could perhaps bring it back. That comment stopped me crying. I don’t know why but I have never cried at a tv program finishing before. However I do wonder if the actors would return… Read more »
I loved the show, loved the last episode. Like many others I didn’t realize Medium had been cancelled and this was the last episode. Wish it would be brought back.
Add me to the list of fans who will miss this show terribly. This was my favorite show of all time…and I don’t watch much TV. I thought the whole series ( including the finale) was well written ,directed, produced and most of all performed flawlessly. I will miss this show more than you will ever know.. Thank you Glenn Gordon Caron for a wonderful show.
I did like the show. I am only a recent follower (and now widower I suppose) but I found the cast skilled and the writing to be one of the more cerebral despite its fantastic premise. I suppose that is a bit contradictory but one only need watch one CSI episode (or any from the other franchises) to see them ask us to waltz with similar unbelievable partners and premises.
All this from a man that is still holding out hope someone brings back Firefly…
I cried…I had no idea what was going on, and hated the whole jumping ahead 7 years concept. Then at the end, I thought maybe it was all a dream, like had happened so often.
When I saw what was happening, the final bows were being taken, and I was so mad…then I cried. I have loved this show from the beginning, through the rough spots and the boring episodes. It’s over.
CBS once again did a disservice to its fans. I am mad, angry, sad , depressed, The abrupt ending with no warning is what makes me the angriest. Could they have not let the season finish. They could have announce the cancellation and let us get use to the idea while watching the last 8 or so episodes.
Thanks CBS for showing how little you care about your viewers
I’m so sad. I love Medium and have been a faithful viewer all along. The finale was fine as far as finales go. It was, however, quite unexpected.
Joe and Allison are one of my all time favorite TV couples. I absolutelyj HATED to see Joe die like that! Especially when I didn’t know it was the series finale until halfway through the episode. I’m glad they’re together at the end, but still! I am going to miss this show a lot. Friday night TV sucks, but even more so now.
I, too, am upset that the show has been cancelled. We just watched via DVR tonight…not realizing anything had happened to the show. With the ending the way it was, my husband and I looked at each other and both said, Did they cancel the show? It was good TV unlike many reality shows that aren’t. We will miss it!
I am so upset the sow is over. Thought the episode was very good but want the show back.
I think you should bring this show back !!! They did it with Dallas. Everytime you get a good show; you pull the plug.
I am devastated that this show is over! I thought it was over amonth ago and when I seen it on a couple weeks ago and again I thought they brought the show back? I hated it but loved it, I just don’t know what I’ll do on Friday nights now?
I’m so dissappointed so see this great series end way too soon…I’m not thrilled with the finale…there was still a lot of life left for the program, and I will miss these great performers! Thanks for the memories.
