It’s the news that fans of Merlin have been waiting for. Syfy isn’t repeating NBC’s decision to cancel Merlin after one season.
Like Smallville, Merlin presents a new look at the younger days of a legendary fictional character. The series stars Colin Morgan, Angel Coulby, Bradley James, Katie McGrath, Anthony Head, Richard Wilson, and John Hurt.
As you may recall, NBC ran the first season of the BBC program last summer. The ratings weren’t very good so they cancelled Merlin. Fortunately, the program moved to another NBC-Universal company for season two.
Season two of the fantasy series ran on Syfy from April until early July and attracted an average of 1.7 million viewers. That’s good enough for the cable channel to want to renew the show for season three.
Of the news, Merlin creator/executive producer Johnny Capps said, “We are thrilled that Syfy will be broadcasting the third series of Merlin… The upcoming season will add an exciting new twist to Merlin’s ongoing struggle to protect Prince Arthur, as well as thrilling audiences with bigger and bolder action sequences, stunning CGI monsters, mysterious villains and comic fun for all the family.”
The BBC had already ordered a third season of 13 episodes last December. Filming reportedly got underway in Wales in March.
There are no specific dates yet but it’s expected that season three of Merlin will begin airing in the UK in the latter part of 2010 and pop up on Syfy in early 2011. No word on the release of season two on DVD.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that Merlin is returning to Syfy for season three?
My family is very excited that Merlin is returning for season 3! My husband and I watch it every week with my daughter, 10 and son, 8. Sometimes my kids watch each episode twice! We love the relationship that Arthur and Merlin have developed and we laugh all of the time at the things they say and do…… We can’t wait for the 3rd season to begin! Thank you Shine Limited & Syfy and all others responsible for keeping the Merlin series going!
Yes! Love this show and was so hoping SyFy would renew it. Our 11 year old daughter loves it and we all watch it together.
SOooooooooooooooooooO, glad to have merlin return for the 3rd season. To bad NBC wasn’t smart enough to keep it. GO SyFy
I am sooooo very happy that Merlin is being renewed . I love that show! So many of my shows has been cancelled that Im really happy that Merlin is coming back.
Love this show! So glad that they’re bringing it back for a 3rd season. It’s nice to see fun, entertaining family show instead of all these reality TV/dating shows. Thanks Syfy!
Awesome news! Love the Merlin series!
Love Merlin! Great Show! Sure wish we can see it sooner in the US, but definitely worth wait for. Hope they continue with a Season 4. Thanks Syfy, best decision ever, we all thank you.
So….glad to hear you are continuing with the series of ‘Merlin’. A show for all ages.
King Arthur and Merlin have been around in folklore a long time, for people to enjoy.
I am absolutely happy that Syfy picked up Merlin. I was dissapointed that the other channel discontinued it. Its their lost. I love Merlin show and I look forward every week to watch it. Can’t wait to see the 3rd season.
Oh hooray!!! I still miss Dr Who which vanished from SyFy only to pop up on BBCA (which I don’t get), so I’m glad we’ll get to see more of this fun little show next year.
Actually every Dr. Who episode you see has already appeared on BBC America first.
The new series at least.
Same for Torchwood.
Those shows are shot on the other side of the ocean and they see them before we do.
It is the reason I even watch BBC America, those shows and Being Human…
And just so all know, it isn’t just US Channels that have bad people deciding show continuance or not, it happens the world round.
A few years ago, they cancelled Primeval. A great show. 2 seasons, although abbreviated…
SyFy did show them though.
hi grandizer, just heared a new season of primeval is being film in america
with a mostly new cast a hybrid prodution i belive.just thought you would like to know, phil
A wonderful show. So nice to have something to watch that’s worthwhile and keeps the interest of myself and my mother and aunt. All of us over the age of 50.
Fantastic news! Can’t wait until it airs!
VERY glad! Loved the sneak peek they had at San Diego Comic Con this year and the third season looks AMAZING!
Terrific! My family is hooked on this show! It’s fabulous. NBCs loss is your gain. It is still rather shocking to me that it is not the runaway hit in the US that it is in most countries of the world. I think that says something not very flattering about the jaded taste of TV viewers in the US. Good for Syfy!
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so happy now I love all things Merlin I am happy a network has realized they have a great show and to stick with it great job SYFY I give you a trillion stars for this one =]
