As Merlin wraps up its second season on the air in the UK, the cast and crew have received some good news. They’ll be going back to work for a third round of episodes.
Merlin tells the story of the legendary wizard’s early adulthood, living in the court of King Uther, Arthur’s father. The series features Colin Morgan as Merlin, Bradley James as Prince Arthur, Anthony Head as King Uther, Katie McGrath as Morgana, Angel Coulby as Gwen, Richard Wilson as Gaius, and John Hurt as the voice of the Great Dragon.
In the UK, the ratings were strong enough for BBC One to renew Merlin for a second season back in December 2008. Season two began airing in September 2009 and will finish on December 19th. While viewership has dropped a bit, the ratings are high enough for BBC One to greenlight a third season.
In a statement, Controller Drama Commissioning Ben Stephenson said, “With its mix of magic, adventure and humour, Merlin is perfect Saturday-evening family television, and we are thrilled that Shine Television will be creating a new series for BBC One. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures our popular young wizard, and his friends in Camelot, will go on in series three.”

Johnny Capps, Executive Producer of Shine Television (which produces the show), added, “Merlin is ready to burst back onto BBC One with more action, romance and, of course, magic to delight fans of all ages. After the thrilling finale of the current series audiences will be left wondering what happens next — and with so many of Merlin and Arthur’s adventures yet to unfold, we can’t wait to continue the story.”
Unfortunately, it’s still up in the air as to when or if the second or third season of Merlin will be shown in the US. An NBC network spokesperson tells us that the network has yet to make a decision on whether they will air another season. The ratings for season one weren’t very strong so, realistically, the chances don’t look all that good.
If NBC decides to air season two of Merlin, the series probably won’t come back until next summer, at the earliest.
If NBC doesn’t want it, the series could be picked up by another outlet. Or, at the very least, fans will eventually be able to purchase season DVDs. The first season has already been released in the UK and will no doubt be released in the US.
What do you think? Would you like to see NBC air the second and third seasons of Merlin? Would you buy them on DVD?

I enjoyed Merlin very much. I would be in complete favor of NBC picking up the series for season 3. I watch every episode and look forward to each week of watching Merlin.
uwielbiam przygody melina są świetne mam nadzieję że będzie 4 i 5 sezon
I really enjoy this show and hope that one of the networks picks it up. Surprisingly enough, children aren’t familiar with King Arthur, Merlin and so on…Bring it back.
Yes!!!!! Please pick up Merlin. My whole family loves it and my friends too! I hope whole heartedly that some american channel picks it up. It would be their lucky day when they made the choice to air Merlin. The sooner the better. That means like NOW please!!!!!!!
merlin should be on tv in the us if not ill be upset. syfy has shown season 1 and2 now im waiting for a third
Do it pleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaassssseeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, I would watch a Season 3 and a Season 4. It’s the only NBC show I watch, and I will be buying the US releases on DVD. (Lord save us from those excruciating reality shows!)
you know what i love merlin but i only have nbc and syfy could you please please PLEASE PLEASE show it there i would love to watch it as soon as possible and my allowance stinks so please show it there.
i dont like foreign movies but when i watched merlin i said to my self this is what am looking for,i have watched it like ten times over and i do hope that the season 3 will be out very soon.
Here’s my suggestion. Bring Merlin back! Put HALF the ad space behind it that you do for some of the shows that NBC airs that aren’t even a tenth of the quality and you’ll get viewer ship. If people do not know it’s out there how do you expect it to compete. Also…take it to prime time…screw Sunday nights…slap that thing on a Tuesday or Wednesday at say 7pm and you’ll have a hit and BBC One can keep making episodes. It’s ALL about marketing.
Merlin is my favorite show . and all my friends love it , i hope they air it in the US or im just gonna have to move to the UK ( merlin’s worth it ) i was so sad when i finished watching the second season ( i almost cryed ) because i would’ve had to wait like a half of a year to see season three , lol . but yeah , it’s better then any US show i’ve ever seen , and i cant wait to season 3 comes out.. and hopfully there’s gonna be a season… Read more »
