Last year, NBC hoped that Sean Hayes and Michael J. Fox, two stars of hit NBC sitcoms from yesteryear, could once again bring big ratings to the network. It didn’t work and both Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show were cancelled.
Undaunted, NBC execs made a deal earlier this year for a new multi-camera sitcom starring veteran Bill Cosby and executive produced by The Cosby Show’s Tom Werner. The untitled comedy, expected to debut Fall 2015, would have seen Cosby playing the patriarch of a multi-generational family who shares his wit and wisdom.
As a result of the multiple rape accusations against Cosby in recent weeks, the network has now cancelled the project. In light of the news, it seems likely that the new show would have been a tough sell to audiences and advertisers alike.
Yesterday, Netflix announced that they were scrapping plans to release a new Cosby comedy special the day after Thanksgiving. Titled Bill Cosby 77, the special celebrates the comic’s 77th birthday.
What do you think? Do you agree with NBC’s decision? Would you have still watched a new Cosby show, in light of the disturbing allegations?
I really think its absurd that something that happened 20/30 years ago can actually make news today its just one of those things were wealthy are being ill-treated for the sake of their hard earned money .
What ever happened to “Innocent till proven guilty” in this country?!? NBC has made some of the worst decisions in the past decade! That’s why they will always be behind CBS in the ratings! And as for Netflix putting their 2 cents worth in? Who cares! I can’t even believe that the discredited accusations of people could drive down a life long entertainer without anyone really waiting to see what happens in the end? I’d watch his show as I grew up on watching the Cosby Show and still remember some of the wisdom of that family. That’s ok, I… Read more »
Every single one of his accusers has been discredited. None of them have provided anything more than words for proof. The stories could almost be photocopies of each other, and as a final nail in the coffin of the hateful group of women out to get their names in the news… Janice Dickenson, a known fame-monger has jumped on the bandwagon. Not a single former cast member has EVER come forward to support these claims, and if this were his pattern, SOMEONE of merit would have seen something, or been among the accusers, giving them the only ounce of credibility… Read more »
Well said, I couldn’t agree more. NBC needs to get their “stuff” together. I can’t imagine anything Mr. Cosby would be associated with isn’t a real problem solver for this network!
It’s really too bad that Robert Culp(Cosby’s co-star on I-Spy) has passed away. I am sure he could enlighten us all on how long this behavior has been going on. At the time the world was his oyster!
Thank you for removing my reply. It was nothing but honest questions, but that says a lot about you “tvseriesfinale.com” guys, doesn’t it.
Your reply to Bud hasn’t been removed. Not sure why you can’t see it. http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/nbc-kills-new-bill-cosby-tv-series-34781/comment-page-1/#comment-1916998
No matter what the outcome is…I will always be a fan of Bill Cosby and continue to support & watch the Cosby Show reruns, Fat Albert cartoons, and his comedy specials.
“No matter what the outcome is…I will always be a fan of Bill Cosby”
Really? If it’s found that Bill Cosby drugged girls and forced himself on them… you’d continue to be a fan of his? Wow.
People still love Michael Jackson and there was more than just accusations to prove what he did.
Can we say payoffs????? What possible other reason could the accusers have at this late date………………………
I am with you. However, every network, and Netflix, etc. have pulled all Cosby reruns. I think this is actually the intended outcome. Bill Cosby must have ticked off some powerful people for slime like this to ooze up out of the sewers and make such vile accusations (which appear to be photocopies of the same script) against him. I find it truly amazing that, with as close as the Cosby Kids worked with him, and with impressionable women on the show who seem to “fit his type”, not a single one of them EVER had a problem. None of… Read more »
The problem is it is all accusation. Nothing has been proven in the court of law, so you can’t say he (or anyone accused) is getting away with it. Politicians, media figures and other high profile people are easy targets for people to accuse. Some have been true, but conversely, others accusations were raised to smear someone, for publicity and/or for easy money (thinking some would pay hush money to keep an accusation, true or not, from being revealed) Now whether this saga is true or not, I do not know. But I will not judge a person before facts… Read more »
Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty. How do we know who is telling the truth?
There is no smoke without fire. Why he never denied all the allegations? How easy was for a former model and beautiful woman to come forward and say what happened, suddenly out of the blue, just to be mean or what? Even more, why he settled an understanding with a former accuser if nothing happened? Why such a powerful network such as NBC, with lots of lawyers, will cancel such a profitable show, unless they knew it will all become ugly?
ABC, there can be smoke without fire. And one does not have to go public to deny allegations, some times ignoring someone is the better way to go, especially if the accuser is not truthful. And people will come out of the blue to claim something, in this day and age, they may believe this is how they will become famous – they were the one who was X’ed by Y. People and companies do settle out of court even if no one is of fault, just to get rid of the matter. That happens all the time in all… Read more »
Couldn’t have said it better myself. This is exactly what these accusers are hoping for, a huge “out of court” settlement. Why Watch you are totally and completely correct!
I believe it would be a bad idea,he’s way of speaking of others and criticizing will come back and hurt him more than help him. He criticize one of the girls in his show, which would really make you wonder what that really was all about.
I agree with NBC
We all respected Cosby and that’s why I think this is so hard and sad.
What explanation can you give for women who do not know each other
coming forward with the same claims?
It sounds like he has been here before. He settled a different situation out of court by paying off that person.
Also the obvious–women rarely lie about rape and sexual assault.
NBC is right to do this
I suggest you do some research because false rape and sexual assault accusations happen more often than activist groups want the general public to know.
Absolute FACT!!!!! I think these women just see easy $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
It’s called “piling on”. One ***** reads about another ***** complaining about Cosby. Maybe he tried to help her career and she just was no damned good. Well, now it’s HIS fault, so pile on! Me too! And guess what? INSTANT PUBLICITY, the kind these women could not buy if they set themselves on fire! Especially Dickinson. Never have I seen someone so desperate to be relevant – and failing so badly. Under normal circumstances, half of all rape complaints are FALSE. Under circumstances like these, where the women are playing for money, recognition, leverage and publicity – I don’t… Read more »
I think this whole situation is a total and complete travesty of justice! None of these allegations are new and have already been discussed to death. If these were true a court of law would have intervened and Cosby jailed. Now even Hollywood has sounded off on this in recent days and they believe an injustice is being propagated against Cosby. We have a political system that runs rampant with REAL LIFE scandal and a total disregard for the truth. Now there seems to be a slanderous attempt on Mr. Cosby which I believe is total BS, where’s Sharpton on… Read more »
I agree with NBC….Bill Cosby is trully a funny man, but to have this accusations which may or may not be true….generally rings with some truth.
Don – I have some beach front property to sell you. We can go look at it some time when the tide is out.
Liberal media will stop at nothing to smear a good man’s name. I would never believe anything NBC said about anyone — good, bad or indifferent, especially about Bill Cosby. This is NBC’s loss. Dateline and the Blacklist are the only shows I watch on NBC.
So Carol, how would you feel if that happened to you or someone you love or know and the accused is someone well respected and w/lots of $ and they’re getting away with it?
I’m taking a wait and see attitude. ALL these women can’t be lying!
How do you feel about Bill Clinton? He was accused of raping several women and look how everyone treats him. He’s considered a modern hero and his wife, who helped cover it up, is a feminist icon.
EXACTLY!!!!!!!
Ah, but Bill Clinton DENIED the charges. He told the world he never had sex with that woman, Monica Lewinsky.
Even with forensic evidence against him.
Of course, these days Clinton hangs out with a billionaire who owns his own island and has the reputation of spiriting underage girls there to have sex parties… Not that Bill would do anything like that… even though he’s been to the island several times… with underage girls. Just ask Clinton. I’m sure he’ll tell you the truth. /sarcasm
Yes, all those women CAN be lying.
As for believing NBC… Do you remember a guy named “Brian Williams”? His helicopter was shot down, he helped Moses part the Red Sea and he personally led the D-Day charge on the beaches of Normandy.
i loved cosby much more than i’ll ever love the cosby show! I wish someone would make a show with cosby…
I really don’t care one way or the other. But the problem is all too common today, being found guilty by the court of public opinion, instead of a court of law.
And the wealthy getting away with it! Oh, and let’s include athletes.
