In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I have been waiting for the new episodes to start and had no idea it had been canceled. This show is hilarious and I am incredibly saddened that I can now only watch it in reruns. I love good sitcoms, but they don’t come around very often. This was one of the best!! CBS you screwed up for losing it in the first place and ABC you screwed up by not grabbing it while you had the chance. Hopefully another network will get smart and put it back on the air.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Christine and the crew. I am so very dissapointed to hear there won’t be any new adventures. Personally, I think they are making a huge mistake by not bringing back the series. There are way too many dumb reality shows on the networks nowadays. Maybe I’ll get a reality show of me watching reruns of “Old Christine”!
Paula, that is hilarious. I would probably watch that reality show, hee hee!!!
Just started watching this on Lifetime. It’s hysterical. Too bad it won’t be back.
I find it amazing that this show was cancelled. I love the reruns and would love to see new shows. I have never laughed so hard. With a society hell bent on reality tv its nice to see a hilarious sitcom finally. Please bring this show back for a new season. Being a single mom it really makes me laugh at myself.
This show is SO FUNNY!!! Why do they always do away with quality shows and all we are left with is crap? PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!
i loved this show . this made me laugh .and out of the shows now new and old this was a keeper. please bring it back
What is with these networks? – more anxious to introduce new reality show losers than keeping quality talent and writing on the air….
I can’t believe no more Christine, it was one of the show we actually looked forward to watching. Why??
This was a great show. I don’t know why they took it off the air!
i cant believe they cancelled that show. i loved it! julia might be a better christine than she was elaine, and she was a TERIFFIC elaine. please someone pick up that show. and they could of at least of had the decency to have a season finally.
I swear, the major networks have no idea what people like! This show was FUNNY. I looked forward to it each week. It really makes me not want to get interested in new shows – they’re just going to be ripped off the air…
i loved this show! its sad to have it be cancelled….all of uswho have dvr always have it taped. i wonder if the network was counting the amount of people who recorded the show. i know i did… ill miss this sitcom.
This so was so funny, I’m sorry I just found it. Other people were telling me to watch it but maybe because of timing I never caught it but what a loss. I loved her in Seinfeld and she was great on New Adventures too! Please bring it back if she will take you back! Wear can I get that cut out black dress she wore on the 5th date episode with Burton….
What is it with these networks???? They take great shows off and there’s so much crap left on!!!!! I loved Christine. Unless it’s reality with people being killed or chefs yelling at a bunch of morons it’s no longer worthy of being on TV. We need more shows that make us laugh. My Name Is Earl was hilarious, Third Rock From the Sun what hilarious, and so was Christine! There’s only a couple of funny ones left…. Two & A Half Men and Hot In Cleveland. Just watch… they’ll be the next to go.
THIS IS THE FUNNIEST SHOW EVER ,WHY DID THEY CANCEL IT, I WOULD ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO WATCHING IT, I WATCH THE RERUNS BUT I WOULD’VE LOVE NEW ONES. WHO EVER IS IN CHARGE OF THIS, PLEASE BRING IT BACK. I HONESTLY CAN’T REMEMBER THE TIME I LAUGHED SO HARD WATCHING ANY OTHER SHOW.
