Fans of ABC’s summer drama, Scoundrels, may have noticed that the series isn’t on the schedule any longer. Has the show been cancelled?
Scoundrels revolves around the West family, a clan that’s had many run-ins with the law. Dad (David James Elliott) has been sent to prison and his wife (Virginia Madsen) is determined that she and their kids not follow him. The TV show’s cast also includes Leven Rambin, Vanessa Marano, Carlos Bernard, and Patrick Flueger (in a dual role).
The series debuted on June 20th to a disappointing 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.23 million viewers. In week two, viewership dropped to a 1.0 in the demo and 3.66 million viewers. The numbers got even worse in subsequent weeks. It hit a demo low 0.6 and, the finale attracted the fewest number of total viewers, just 2.73 million. Those are some terrible numbers for a major network, even for the summer months.
Only eight episodes of Scoundrels were produced and, to ABC’s credit, they aired them all — despite the low ratings. Unfortunately, the network has little reason to want any more. So, no, ABC has not officially cancelled Scoundrels but, it is highly unlikely that they’ll order a second season.
What do you think? Why do you think Scoundrels didn’t fare better? Is it a better show than the ratings reflect?

..and yes! We tried to find it tonight to see what happens after Wolf walks in and you just cut if off!!! WHAT????????????????????????????????? People just don’t know yet that it’s now on because most people DVR stuff. If it was advertised more and you would show commercials so people could find it!!!!!! PLEASE DON’T TAKE IT OFF!!!!!
Great show!!! Should have been promoted more. Please continue this excellent entertainment. Reality shows are garbage.
As far as I am concerned there are only 2 good shows on, which are Scoundrels and Mad Men. I totally agree with everyone who wrote that they are tired of the same types of shows. Too many reality shows, too many crime and too many medicals shows. Boring, Boring, Boring!!! When I saw Virgina Madsen on The View, announcing this new show I had to watch it. She is one of the best top of today. I think that all of the actors capture your attention. I am so disappointed to find tonight, after researching for the last 20… Read more »
I LOVE this show! It’s one of the few shows that my husband will watch! Please don’t take it off. The acting is so good and it’s such a fun show!!!!! It just hasn’t been advertised enough. People haven’t found it. Also, summer months are hard on Sunday evenings. People are gone or outside or church or whatever. Try them one more season. PLEASE!!!!
I enjoyed the Scroundels show. I thought it was entertaining and out of the norm…too many crime scene shows on tv. It wasn’t the best show ever but I would watch it if it was on. I have missed the last 2 weeks from being out of town on vacation, so to my surprise the show isn’t on the tv line up tonight. Boooo!!! Bring it back for a second try!!!! Thanks for reading!
People dont like to see how things are in life they want fluff and white picket fences things that are not real.Pretty sad huh. one more good show down the tubes lets watch some more american idol what a jooookkkeee.
Not used to new shows in the summer. So I just DVR them until I can watch them all at once. I assume they were all set for short runs. As a David James Elliot fan I’d like to see the show back. And it did seem like a cliff hanging ending perfect for a return in 2011.
One more thing. Although I love Brother’s and Sister’s, Scoundrels is a more realistic version of Brother’s and Sister’s. Kind of normal people living in a normal house, normal problems, without the underlying “wealth” of Brother’s and Sister’s.
Well, I actually really liked the show, call me juvenile if you like? I was really looking forward to watching it this Sunday. I kind of think that it’s a bunch of crap to leave those of us who do enjoy the show, not knowing what happened next? Anyone else agree? She was kissing the detective and Wolf walks in, and that’s it, that’s crap. We were just starting to hit the climax people, come on, please air a few more, please. We need to know what happens next!!!!!!!!!
Andrea,
I agree that we were definitely left hanging at one of the most important parts of the show. Wolf catching Cheryl kissing Mack. We need another season to find out what will happen.
first sitcom in years that i loved i am tired of reality tv i want more sitcoms
I loved the show. I think it should have been a fall show when more viewers are not on vacation.
Not to be annoying but…
I watched Scoundrels once and I thought it was too juvenile and nonsensical to waste time watching..Guess you could blame me for the declining audience.
On the other hand I think if “The Gates” got the earlier time slot (9pm in my area) they would have an even larger audience…it’s that good.
ABC, the land of “Lost”, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, V, Brothers&sisters and other really good shows could put on such an unfunny comedy 🙁
If you need to have a comedy, bring back “Better off Ted”!
I liked the show – the finale did not show until 12:00am in the morning after football – how can you get a fair rating in that time slot? Please come back next summer and please show the reruns again.
I wasn’t sure about the show at first, but it grew on me. I had to see it each Sunday. All the cast members are good. Patrick Flueger does a great job in his dual roles. Great camera work and editing. I for one would love to see it come back another season.
I never watch reality shows, have had enough cop shows, and what’s with the vampire shows – I could go on and on.
Please bring back Scoundrels. Please, please, please.
I completely agree with you Jean. I happened catch the show when nothing else was on and I was drawn into it. It grew on me too and now I’m upset that they may take it off the air. Believe me, I’ve been bustling around tonight trying to figure out why it wasn’t on.
Again, I agree with you on the other types of shows out there. They all end up being the same boring thing. You can only endoure so many reality, cop, hospital, and vampire shows.
Please, please, keep Scoundrels on the air. This is the first show that feels like you’re actually watching something with a plot. I swear, one more reality, cop, medical or CSI type show, I’m gonna SCREAM. TV is all but crapp now. This show feels like a mini series. I couldn’t wait to see the next show, and I’m NOT a TV fan anymore. Please keep this show on, give it a chance. People have to “catch on” to something sometimes and then POW, they’re hooked.
Leave the show on. the acting is superb. Special kudos to the actor who plays three characters.
