After four seasons, Supernatural has never been hotter and it’s already been renewed for season five. So why do the show’s stars and creator want to call it quits?
Created by Eric Kripke, Supernatural revolves around the Winchester brothers and their ongoing battle against demons, and any other hellion you can think of. Older brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) followed in the footsteps of his demon-hunting father (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) while Sam (Jared Padalecki) tried to make a break from the family business and lead a normal life. When Sam’s girlfriend is killed in a similar manner as his mother and the brothers’ dad disappears, the good-looking heroes set out on a crusade of their own.
Recurring characters are played by Jim Beaver, Genevieve Cortese, Misha Collins, Katie Cassidy, Lauren Cohan, Samantha Ferris, Julie McNiven, Nicki Aycox, Alona Tal, Samantha Smith, Sterling K. Brown, Chad Lindberg, Robert Wisdom, Charles Malik Whitfield, Adrianne Palicki, Fredric Lehne, and Colin Ford.
With the series’ mythos and world fully established, why would the show’s creator, Eric Kripke, and the stars want to end the series? Well, Kripke says that he’s always envisioned the Winchester boys’ story as a five year arc and intends to keep it that way. He recently told Entertainment Weekly, “Despite what the network and the studio may or may not want, I don’t have more than five seasons of story.”
Though it’s unlikely that the CW execs will be ready to let one of their most successful shows go, they may not have a choice. Kripke says, “I certainly would be willing to make sure there are enough villains and heroes around to continue a new story line, and I would be around to answer a few questions — that’s it. I’m outta here. There’s no way I’m doing season six.”

If that were to happen, Supernatural might have to shift focus to Bobby, a demon, the angels, or some new characters. The contracts for Kripke, Ackles, and Padalecki all expire after next season and the actors aren’t planning to stay either.
While the actors love the show and their work, they’re tired of the grind. Ackles says, “We don’t live at home. We don’t sleep in our own beds. Our families aren’t here. Our friends aren’t here. Our girlfriends aren’t here. To do it for another five years, or whatever, I don’t know if I could handle it.”
Padalecki agrees, “I enjoy working, but what’s the point? Do I just want to keep on doing photo shoots and work so I can get more famous so I can do even more photo shoots and work and fly to more places to do more press? …I get sick of talking about myself.” The actor says he doesn’t want the show to become cheesy, with the characters becoming too old to realistically do their jobs. He says, “I think I’d rather leave [the viewers] wanting more than get to the point where they boo you off the stage.”
CW President Dawn Ostroff says that, if the show continues to be popular, she’d certainly want the show to go on. She feels however that it’s too early to address making that a reality. In truth, the small network might even not have the resources to make that happen. As Ackles says, “They’d have to back up a Brinks truck.”
While last week’s episode culminated in a huge fight between the two brothers, you can expect next season’s finale to be even bigger. Kripke is planning to end it all with the battle to end all battles, one between heaven and hell. Ironically, that little fight sounds about as hard as it’s going to be to get a sixth season of Supernatural.

I looove supernatural. its one of the best shows on tv but i definitely think it should end after 5 seasons.
thats how it was planned out from the beginning and we dont want the show to become bad. its better to quit while its still good.
besides where do you go after the apocolypse??
and i cant imagine the show without ackles or padalecki
im glad too, that season 5 will be the end, but i would still like to see more like season 6 or so, but they cant make season six, somehow, because there is nothing else to write about, unless if the ending of season 5 ends up not a happy ending, so yeah, but, there’s one thing they could do, A Movie maybe. about Dean got married, Sam goes to school, they both found a beautiful wives or girlfriends and had children, and so the children continue the legacy.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are u frigen serious no season 6….
man, im really gonna miss em (jensen & jared) but like come on!!!!!!! no season 6…. Like OMG!! there has to be a season 6!! but u must admit they have been working theyre asses off for us viewrs and if they dont wanna do another season we should respect theyre decision
I think that it’ll be good to end at 5 seasons. I mean, I LOVE this show, but where do you go after the apocolypse?
Supernatural is the best show on television right now. And I believe Kripke is a genius! However, if he envisions the show to end next year, then I say we should respect his wishes. He gave us five good years and I’m absolutely alright with it. I agree with Thomas London. It is better for a show to end with a big bang rather than stretch it out and allow something so wonderful to fizzle into crap. And I don’t know if this is relevant, but I think for Supernatural to end with five seasons fit perfectly. Maybe I’m a… Read more »
I’m sorry to see Supernatural ending after Season 5, but in a way I’m glad. That way it won’t overstay it’s welcome like some shows on the CW, that should have ended with a new original ending, instead of copying 70 overused years of mythos.
you have to have season 6 and up i mean it
I’m a British viewer of the series and i personally would be gutted if it ended. Supernatural has had some of the funniest TV moments i’ve seen for a long time! However i feel a show only works if all those invoved in it are happy to keep it going. As much as i would hate to see it go i think that without Erik Kripke at the helm it would struggle to keep to the standard we’ve all come to expect. I’ll will miss looking at those two pretty pretty boys though……
sam and dean make the show and the fact that this show could go on making money, for quite some time due to them and because the show is so awesome!!!!! why cancel something that could make so much more money at the same time increase viewers. the public loves sam and dean!!!! this show deserves at least six seasons and a better conclusion after the last finale.
After last night season finale. I wish Eric would stop after season 5.
Finally a smart producer, it’s always better to go out on top, and with a series finally, instead of limp out or get canceled in the middle of a story. I personally think 5 years is long enough for any series. I never got why a series would go on and on until they lose viewership, and then get canceled. KUDOS. go out with a bang and on top.
Ok, the end has beey alreay started, and i hope brothers will be together in 5-th season.
Отлично, конец уже начался, и я надеюсь, что братья будут вместе в пятом сезоне.
This is kind of disappointing since I only watch 3 shows on the CW. Supernatural, Smallville, and Reaper. Smallville is closing in on its final season. Reaper probably won’t be back next year. Now Supernatural only has 1 season left? Unless they cook up some more plans and release their Robin/Batman series. As long as it’s the same caliber as the shows I listed above. I may have to say farewell to the CW. Gossip Girl and 90210 are just to ridiculously stupid and cheesy for me to watch 1 episode or even want to. I’d even enjoy a Smallville… Read more »
I think that EW article was bull. Jensen said his contact expired AFTER season 6. And here’s what Misha had to say: -What have you heard about season five being the last season?- Misha Collins: I have heard rumblings here and there. But I have also heard that its, by no stretch of the imagination, true. Or a done deal. Or that anyone actually knows that. I think there are a lot of rumors going on. I talked to Jared and Jensen about it when we were in Australia. Basically, they said that when the show was conceived, Eric Kripke… Read more »
i have been watching and catching every single episode since i have saw the first episode in season 1. i started having a fever on supernatural and thought the storyline might be gonna be the same length as smallville. i hope, and i believe all supernatural fans will hope there will be a season 6, hence the actors ,Older brother Dean (Jensen Ackles) &Sam (Jared Padalecki) , they will continue acting in supernatural. “there are always interesting and hilarious ideas to be created, it’s only the fact that whether you wanna create it or not…thats why we have a brain… Read more »
