Bones has been a quiet hit for FOX but the same can’t be said for its spin-off, The Finder. FOX has now cancelled the low-rated series after one season.
The Finder is a procedural series that revolves around a man (Geoff Stults) with the extraordinary ability to help people find the unfindable. Other castmembers include Maddie Hasson, Mercedes Masohn, and Michael Clarke Duncan.
The spin-off debuted on January 12th to a disappointing 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.50 million total viewers. It was fourth in its Thursday night timeslot right out of the gate and lost nearly 30% of the all-important demo from its compatible lead-in, Bones. This was not a good start.

Things picked up a bit in the following weeks, thanks in large part to the show having FOX’s blockbuster American Idol as a lead-in. Still, the numbers weren’t as high as they should have been.
After seven weeks on the air, FOX put Finder on hiatus and then moved it to Friday nights, giving its Thursday timeslot to Touch. If The Finder could maintain a healthy percentage of its viewers after the switch, it would likely garner a renewal.
But that didn’t happen and Finder’s numbers dropped like a rock. In its first Friday airing, the freshman series attracted a 1.1 demo rating — an episode-to-episode loss of 53% — with just 4.03 million viewers. The numbers for future episodes fluctuated a bit but didn’t really get any more encouraging. The network could do just as well or better by running cheaper reality programming.
The season finale of The Finder is set to air this Friday night and there won’t be any episodes after that. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall early enough and won’t leave viewers hanging with any major unresolved storylines.
What do you think? What went wrong with this show? Why do you think The Finder failed to attract a bigger audience? Was cancelling the series the right decision? How would you have fixed it?
Let Netflix Pick up the series…. seems like the demographic you are searching for is prone to be a Netflix Viewer. Maybe take this into consideration next time you try and target towards a younger viewer audience.
This program is so clever, funny, interesting and original… LOVE it! . Haven’t found any program I’ve enjoyed this much in years.
Needs to come back and be promoted. Who do we call to lobby for its return?
OOPS…. black man….not main
There won’t be another. Michael Duncan was an intricate character.
As stated, they would have to find as good an actor and change
relationship to main character. No changing to to a woman, either.
Must be a black main that Walter can relate to as he did w/Michael.
Sorry folks, Hollywood screwed up again and did not tweak during
season. RIP Mr. Duncan
The only reason it failed not enough promoting the show. I just found on Netflix for 1st time and I’m upset! Are you kidding me?!
I never heard of the show it should have been a top contender. I found it on Netflix have watched through 3 times since. When I watch a show 2 times it is good. 3 times it is awesome. It should have made it!!!
Maybe Netflix will pick it up. It was a very good show and deserves a second season.
Excellent series!!!
We watched it when it first came out & have thoroughly enjoyed it over & over on Netflix.
Totally disappointed that it wasn’t renewed & Netflix should pick it up & continue the series like they did with Longmire!
Found this show by sheer accident on Netflix. I had so much fun watching it. I knew there was only one season, and I knew that MCD had passed away, but didn’t realize the show was from 2012. Nor did I ever hear of it before Netflix. I was hoping there had been a second season that hadn’t made it to Netflix yet. Really bummed about the way the series ended. It wd be nice if Netflix were to take it over and produce more seasons after finding a suitable character and actor to take over Leo’s bar. Just sayin’!
I loved the show. Yes Netflix brought it back . N Netflix is what everyone is on now in days. Internet. Not everyone what regular television anymore. Season 2 is a must . Netflix it should go to quick. There I’m sure will be most viewd. Like bones n Izombie..
Thank you Netflix for having this show. Really enjoyed the whole series. Sadly, shows like this take a long time to develop viewers. If this show had been on a different network like USA maybe it would have lasted.
I’m really sad that the show got canceled. It had to end in a bad way but overall the show was amazing. I had lots of fun watching the series. I would love to see more TV shows like it.
Whatever went tragically wrong during air-time, I think Netflix has brought this series into the light and breathed new life and interest into it. I adored this show much more than I ever enjoyed Bones! Bones is fine and all, don’t get me wrong, but I personally thought this was a much more exciting, eccentric, entertaining, amusing, and overall engaging show. Very sad to see that there won’t be a continuation. I’d LOVE for there to be more!
Make season 2 it did not end right and it is really good when you get in it i want to see more one more season you cant tell if its going to do good or not unless you do season 2
I watched the whole season in two weeks and absolutely LOVED the show. So disappointed that there’s no season two. They really left it unfinished with that last episode, so I when I looked to see when the next season would air, I was really bummed. I think the views would have been a lot better if they would have promoted the show more.
