The Muppets TV show on ABC has been cancelled after its first and only season. It’s still not easy being green, or covered in felt of any color. Season one of The Muppets premiered September 22, 2015 and earned a 2.87 in the 18-49 year old ratings demographic and drew an audience of 9.005 million viewers. The cancellation was expected. Despite the strong premiere numbers, in the first season overall, The Muppets averaged a 1.26 in the demo and brought an average total audience of 4.016 million viewers.
Those averages do not tell the whole story, though. Episode 16 of The Muppets, its first season and series finale, garnered an anemic 0.88 in the demo, with a total audience of just 2.733 million viewers. The show never really recovered after its winter hiatus, between December 8, 2015 and February 2, 2016.
As the latest installment in the Muppets franchise, The Muppets TV series was framed as a mockumentary TV show. The series features the lives of the Muppet crew on Miss Piggy’s Up Late with Miss Piggy TV talk show.
Although Kermit (Steve Whitmire) and Miss Piggy (Eric Jacobson) have, shall we say, “consciously uncoupled,” he convinces the reluctant porcine pretty to consent to the “documentary.” Piggy’s head writer is Gonzo (Dave Goelz). Scooter (David Rudman) is her booking agent.
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Goelz) runs the props department with Beaker (Whitmire). Sam Eagle (Jacobson) is the head of ABC’s standards and practices.
The Up Late with Miss Piggy TV show band is Electric Mayhem, led by keyboardist Dr. Teeth (Bill Barretta). Floyd Pepper (Matt Vogel) plays bass. Janice (Rudman) is the guitarist. Zoot (Goelz) is the saxophonist. Naturally, Animal (Jacobson) is the drummer.
Kermit’s best friend Fozzie Bear (Jacobson) is a standup comedian. His human girlfriend’s parents are against their relationship. He hopes landing the role of Piggy’s sidekick will improve his standings.
Pepe the King Prawn (Barretta), who was born Pepino Rodrigo Serrano Gonzales in Madrid, is a staff writer working for Gonzo. A new pig, Denise (Julianne Buescher), works in network marketing and is, for a time, Kermit’s new main squeeze. By the finale, “Because…Love,” Kermit and Piggy’s feelings for each other are once again, front and center, but course of true love never did run smooth.
What do you think? Did you watch The Muppets TV series on ABC? Did ABC do right by cancelling it, or should it have renewed The Muppets?
Loved it! It should come back on!!!!!
Loved it! I want it back!
They definitely should’ve renewed it. There’s hardly any comedy tv shows suitable for kids now. I’ve got a 12 yr old daughter & she’s got no idea of what comedy to watch now that The Muppets were cancelled. Does anyone suggest anything funny & age appropriate for her? Thanks
LISTEN HERE THIS SHOW WAS WONDERFUL. IT BROUGHT ME CLOSER TO THE CHILD WITHIN ME. I AM A STRONG 20 YEAR OLD WOMAN IN AMERICA WHO JUST WANTS MORE OF A GENTLE LOVING FROG AND A STRONG INDEPENDENT PIG. I’D LOVE TO SEE THAT THIS GENERATION CAN BE INTUNE WITH THE BEST OF THE LITTLES THINGS SUCH AS THIS SHOW. MISS PIGGY TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE COMFORTABLE IN MY OWN SKIN AND NOT TO BE OWNED BY A N Y O N E. I NEED MUPPETS IN MY LIFE WE AS AMERICANS NEES MUPPETS TO REMIMD US TO CHERISH… Read more »
hubby and i would gladly have continued watching this series. Possibly not as good as original run back in the 70s80s but certainly colorful characters and cute plot lines. Some of the lesser characters were better developed or better featured in this series than before. We chuckled at every episode.
I liked the show and was disappointed that they cancelled it though not entirely surprised. Though plagued with ongoing elements I didn’t like, such as showcasing characters I didn’t care about or disliked, such as Janice, and NOT showcasing fan-favorites I wanted to see, such as Pepe, deep down I felt it needed to get better. I guess the American viewer wasn’t ready for “humanized” Muppets, or care about characters they didn’t care about.
I LOVED, LOVED this show! As someone who grew up watching the muppets, I looked forward to each and every episode. SO, SO disappointed to see this only given a one-season chance. No other show or characters like this on TV. Bring them back!!
They should have never broken up Miss Piggy and Kermit. Also the muppets was for all age groups so just having today’s celebs don’t work. They use to have celebs for all ages I used to watch these with my grandad. And most importantly you need comedy and there was not much of that in the series.
Ad far as The Muppets go, I never really thought much about it.
Please renew the Muppets. I think they deserve another chance.
They screwed It Up From The Get Go It Was Stupid To Have Piggy And A Late Night Talk Show But I Hope They Bring It Back In A Couple Years To Try Again With Out The Stuff They Had This Time
After 2BG (2 Broke Girls) this was my favorite show of the season 🙁 It was just too funny to see the muppets in the real world. So sad to see it go… So long to Kermit and the Gang, you’ll always have a place in my heart
Of course you cancel this wonderful show. Have to make room for the junk you put on. I LOVED this show. Please, please, please bring it back.
Say it isn’t so, loved the mid season REBOOT! 🙁
I blame the changes made at winter break. Before that it was funny, after…not so much.
