There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

I can’t believe CBS would cancel “The Unit.” My wife and I love this show. Its themes of honor, commitment, and love for both country and spouse are rare in TV-land these days. I’m glad that Mamet decided to leave the door open for it to be picked up, either by CBS or another network.
this is sad all the good shows always gets canceled and the bad ones stay on. How are they just going to leave us hanging like that. This show should not be canceled, they are not taking into consideration DVR, people are taping the shows to watch later every week, I do
The Unit is a show that presents the very character that this country is built on. Hard work, dedication, loyalty, trust, respect, love, honor, and most importantly faith. CBS you have made a big mistake in canceling a show that puts hope and pride in the hearts that need it the most. Please reconcider your actions for it will only be harder for the audience the show is ment for and attracts to function in this crazy world we live in. The unit is what it states, it unites americans and instills its values in our children. I invite more… Read more »
This is crazy. The best show on CBS (besides Survivor) is gone. Count me in on a Petition. Now I have no reason to watch CBS.
Really a shame with Obama degrading the military, America needs a show that show how competent and great our special forces are.
Freakin’ BS! My favorite shows (The Shield)-and the Unit- both GONE! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Way bad play on CBS’s part. The network is really spiralling down…. No more CSI’s no more Survivors, COME ON——-I need a new FAV show, and there is very little out there.
Thank GOD for football!
Let’s petition to get the UNIT back !!! Cmon PEOPLE!
This show is great! I think CBS is stupid for wanting to get rid of this show. It’s action-packed…and keeps you on edge. As a female…I love it. My boyfriend is in the military & he loves it too. It fits a lot of audiences….Bottom line, we need season 5.
Idiot, Idiot, Idiot!
CBS must be kidding. One of the best shows in TV with a low budge and cancelled because the estimete ranking? CBS should make a poll just to have the real sense out there. It sems to be that CBS prefer broadcast forensic shows or reality shows where the espectator see the actor arguing all the time. Stupid decision.
I live in the UK and love “The Unit” it is a breath of fresh air from other programs that over dramatize. “The Unit” brings not only the action but shows the lives of army families and the strives and troubles they have to endure. I don’t know much about the USA politics of the film industry but my friends and I are devastated that this program is canceled and hope that the powers that be rethink their strategy or another studio takes it on and continues the show. Please! more people write in…
IN A TIME WHEN ALMOST EVERY SHOW IS THE SAME THE UNIT WAS A REFRESHING CHANGE. NOT ONLY DID IT KEEP YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT, YOU COULD ACTUALLY WATCH IT WITH YOUR WHOLE FAMILY. AND AS AN AMERICAN IT GAVE YOU MORE APRRECATION FOR THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR US ALL EVERYDAY AND GO UNRECOGNIZED. MAYBE IF IT WASN’T PUT ON AFTER SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL THE VIEWERS WOULD HAVE INCREASED. LETS FACE IT CBS HAD A HIT BUT WAS UNABLE TO PLACE IT WHERE IT COULD SHINE. TO BAD. HOPEFULLY… Read more »
Unbelievable…it’s half as cheap and still rating 9m a week plus overseas sales. CBS, have you lost the plot? Just another example of how the networks are dumbing down. Very disappointed.
What are you boobs at CBS smoking.. I can’t believe that you cancelled The Unit. You are crazy, You put on trash like Survivor and all of those trashy reality shows, then have the balls to cancel the best show on TV. Then we are further insulted with the likes of Katy Couric and David Letterman. Thank god I have Satellite and do not have to watch CBS
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read that “The Unit” had been cancelled! The absolute nerve of CBS to cancel such a hugely popular show especially when we need encouragement & motivation from a show that portays a highly skilled military unit doing our men & women in uniform overseas justice! This show helps us justify & gives us reasons why we’re overseas let alone here in the US defending our beloved country from terrorists, taking care of our military families & putting their lives on the line to keep us “the land of the free and the home… Read more »
BRING IT BACK!!! One of the few shows on TV that the writing and acting so good.
