There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Does anyone have an exact address where I could give CBS a piece of my mind?
Why cancel The Unit – its one of the best shows on TV in the UK. At least its not another reality rip-off show with wannabes acting like trash all the time. The stars of this show can really act.
I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU WOULD CANCEL SUCH A GREAT SHOW!! IN AN AGE WHERE TV SHOWS ARE POORLY WRITTEN AND ACTED, THIS SHOW SURPASS ALL OTHERS. EACH WEEK IT KEPT YOUR INTEREST AND PROVIDED YOU WITH AN INTELLIGENT SHOW KEEPING YOU GUESSING AT EVERY TURN. NOW I CAN HONESTLY SAY THERE IS NOTHING ON TV. CBS YOU HAVE ONCE AGAIN DISAPPOINTED ME.
This really “SUCKS” One of only shows that aren’t “REALITY BS” and the network cancels it. I understand decision making is hard some time but this is just WRONG.
I cannot believe CBS would do this. The Unit is the best show on TV. —-by far. I am not sure how I can punish CBS. Any ideas?
we love the show and we are no where near 55. i’ve been an army brat my whole life and this is the most realistic show that has ever been out there that really show what army is really about. i will not be watching cbs anymore since there is nothing left on that network worth watching now!!!!
ok It’s official..
people who decide what goes and what stays are morons…
I REALLY HOPE someone picks this up
this has been one of my favorite shows out there..
and lets see ohh yeah Galactica is gone now..
hrmm no reason to keep cable without good shows..
I have watched this show from day one and have waited up patiently every sunday nite no matter what time it was to watch was going to happen next even after making the loyal fans wait when writers decided to go on stike and leave the public hanging on for signs of life. This is the best show on air amongst all other networks. I garuntee if the unit is cancelled CBS will more than likely regret pulling it and lets not for get without a trace being pulled as well. CBS has lost there minds as well as viewers… Read more »
The Unit will be back if the fans do there part. Contact All State Insurance(the major advertiser) and demand they put pressure on CBS to bring back The Unit.
Then prepare to Boycott All State Insurance if they do not bring it back. This is how things are done in T.V.land. Money talks and ******** walks.
Always follow the money.
Whose dumb assed idea was it to put it on Sunday night, second show after the football game? I’m surprised Cold Case survived. You never knew what time the damned shows would start! No wonder the ratings slipped. CBS – most of your shows are trash. The Unit and Cold Case are and were gems in our book. Why dont you replace the Unit with one of the brainless reality shows, they dont cost much to make. Netflix is looking like a good possibility in our future. Hope you jerks go bankrupt, but then us taxpayers would have to bail… Read more »
Hey Comcast, pick up the UNIT and pay for season 5. That’s an easy 9 million viewers that will switch to your service for a 2 yr contract… and dump CBS. It’s what they call a no-brainer.
The unit is one the best shows on right now. Change the air day & time, maybe near foxes24 time slot and forgo the Sundays at 10…t here is a HUGE audience out here and the cast is superb! Also, much more patriotic and without the “propagandized commentary” that 24 and others espouse! CBS has some great shows on right now and this is one of them. PLEASE RECONSIDER!
Well this is one more reason not to watch any TV on Sunday nights. I guess I will just read a book. When I see what little it cost to produce this show and compare it to quality of other shows that cost twice as much it must mean the same dunder heads that ran the US automotive industry must now be in charge of prime time line-up at CBS.
PLEEEEEEEEZZZ!!
DON’T CANCEL THE SHOW. I BEG OF YOU!!
I LOVE THIS SHOW…..
Oh No, not another CSI or reality series! What were they thinking by cancelling The Unit? This was the best show on TV with the story lines and episodes that left you hanging on edge discussing with others what the next episode would intel. This show needed a lot more publicity. I talked to a lot of people who had never even heard of it before. Goodbye CBS.
