There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

My husband and I loved to watch the Unit, I can’t believe it has been cancelled. The story line was always good and there are so many things on TV that are not worth watching. Wish CBS would reconsider.
This is ridiculous this show should have never been cancelled.. THey really need to bring it back and play it earlier in the day instead of so late and it will have a better audience than what it did. I looked forward to this show every week and hope that it comes back.
It is a sorry state of affairs when a show with over 9 million viewers gets cancelled because the average age of the viewers is over 50. Perhaps NBC could pick up The Unit and replace Len0’s primetime mess or any network could use The Unit in place of the mindless quasi-realty shows.
I think that CBS should be ashamed!!! I have been a regular viewer of “The Unit,” since it first aired in 2006. This is a GREAT show with exciting storylines and characters. At the very least, CBS should air a final season or a TV movie bringing things to a close; since season four left us hanging in the balance waiting for what happened next!!!!! I understand that everything comes down to money in this day and time; but do you really think that we need to be watching another “reality” show? I can’t believe that the major networks are… Read more »
Once again, great show gone. I swore I wouldn’t get hooked on another CBS show when they canceled Jericho and I did. Interesting plots, decent cast and of course it came down to money. When are the executives going to find out that they better pay attention to those who are actually watching TV – even if they are old. I would say almost 10 million people watching a show would be a big deal. Sitcoms are all the same and are rude and crude and getting worse every season. Reality shows are boring for the most part. I agree,… Read more »
They should at least do either a final season or a movie that brings everything to a close instead of leaving things as if it would continue and didn’t the way season 4 ended
What is not to like about a covert special opperations group of people that don’t exist on paper. If anything they should have just changed the time slot. Atleast bring it back for a real ending.
They killed this by putting it on too late for people who have to wook, now we are stuck with reality blazae and sit-coms.. I have started going to sleep even earlier at night , now.
If I could only watch one show a week, this would be it – hands down.
what the hell! this was one of the only shows i enjoyed watching!
I am very disappointed in finding out that The Unit is Cancelled. I have been waiting and waiting for it to return. This was a very realistic show. I looked forward to watching it every week. There are so many senseless shows that are aired everyday. What a waste – to remove this series! CBS get it right and bring back this show!
I can not believe this show is cancelled!!! I was recently introduced to it and I am extremely disappointed that it will not longer be available. I love the characters and the storyline. I am actually refusing to watch CBS until I recover from this news. Best of luck to the actors involved, I hope to see you in the future. Especially MAC!
Boycott CBS! What a stupid decision. The Unit was one of the best shows on TV period.
We were waiting on the return of The Unit when I decided to check out when the new season started. Can’t believe it was cancelled!!! PLEASE bring it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Am REALLY disappointed!!! Just found out The Unit was cancelled … have been looking for ads telling when it was to start again for the season. Darn! If viewership was down, then PROMOTE it! It was such a good show and I don’t think many people knew about it …
What about re-runs? I’d like to, at least, be able to watch them again.
DARN!!! Just can’t believe it …
I was grateful for sleuth showing The Unit. I just think it is a shame CBS was so short sighted. I remember when Col. Blake left MASH. The episode was wonderful. Col. Potter shows up. Another memorable show. My point is, imagine Master Sgt. Blaine leaving the unit at the end of season 5. The last episode of the season shows Jonas and Molly saying good bye and Mack taking lead on the next mission. In season 6, Col. Ryan dies saving his men. He is replaced. The fans of the show would always remember those characters and embrace the… Read more »
