There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Just great! Let’s keep the stupid stuff on (Suppernanny, The Bigest Looser, The Sinpsons, King of The Hill, Ungly Betty, Shark Tank, etc). But remove any and everything from TV that depict what our armed forces and special forces have to deal with to keep the is country free.
My wife and i stumbled upon the show and were instantly hooked. We are currently doing a season 1 marathon with intensions of buying more seasons. My question is what can a viewer do to help get this show back on. If every viewer that likes it donated $10 that would give them a tidy budget to continue with it. Does anyone have any more realistic ideas
This was an awesome series. I know many disappointed fans. Bring it back.
I can’t believe what I’m reading. I was wondering why we haven’t seen previews for season 5. Why didn’t they put it on another night. Maybe that would have brought in a different audience. I personally loved the show. Actioned packed like 24. Bring it back.
I didn’t watch The Unit but my grandmother did so bring it bck for her……as long as you don’t mess with NCIS we will be good PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don’t mess with NCIS.
Couldn’t you cancel some of those crazy, no meaning, shows that are on CBS. We watch very little CBS shows because there aren’t many that we like. Keep the NCIS, NCIS LA, Extreme Homemake Over, Burn Notice, the Leverich, White Collar and shows like that on. The Unit was one of our favorite shows. Glad 24 is coming back too.
i LOVE THIS SHOW!
I hate that you have taken the Unit off.It was a great show and I looked forward to watching it on Sunday nights.Bring it back.Get rid of ncis LA and bring the UNIT back!!!!!!!!!
Bring it back and get rid of CSI Maimi or one of the other CSI’s. This show is much more interesting and realistic.
Bring.It.Back.
i am currently rewatching the first three seasons of this show with a friend of mine and i gotta say this is one of my favorite shows ever. unfortunately i feel its too smart for the general public. this show should get grabbed by showtime or hbo and revamped (keeping the cast of course.)
I agree completely. It is a fast-paced, well-written and realist show. It is really unfortunate that CBS cancelled it. The forensic/law shows and the medical dramas are really a dime a dozen. The Unit was so unique and the cast was great.
I love the Unit, why would you kill such a show that is different from csi, and law and order, cold case, etc… that is why prison break was also so good. Bring back the UNIT.
I love this show. I have all four seasons and really hope thay bring it bakc. The Unit is so much more realistic and entertaining than any other show I have watched. I am tired of all the CSIs I want the Unit back.
Hmm. a buddy of mine started watching the show with me and he was instantly hooked on the show up until i told him it was cancelled. He was quite upset even though watching a few episodes. So he wanted season 1 for Christmas but instead he ended up getting all four seasons. Nice isn’t?? So he’s on a tv series marathon at the moment. Now, I do agree with what most of you had mentioned earlier from mindless sitcoms and reality shows. I liked CSI and NCIS but it got old after they started having too many of them… Read more »
CBS is nuts…it’s like they wanted this show to fail, if it did not have a hug viewing population it is because THEY KEPT CHANGING IT’S TIME SLOT!! The last two seasons it was a watch that time slot hide and seek game to see if it was coming on almost nightly. I think is was on of the best shows on any network. Myself and all my friends miss it to the point that we think about boycoting CBS. And…CBS if anyone is reading this Big Brother sucks!!!!!!!!!! I am not in the military nor am I married but… Read more »
My family cannot believe this show has been canceled! What a stupid move on the part of CBS! There are way too many reality TV shows on that are lame, utterly senseless, and just mind numbing to watch. This show represented some of America’s finest doing what most people wouldn’t do for millions of dollars and they do it under cover and for government pay! I suppose the trust is too much for CBS and the fact that older viewers loved the show and the casting was fab too! Please reconsider or let another network pick it up, as happened… Read more »
