There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

My whole family watched all the episodes of THE UNIT from season 1 to 4, we love the series very much…as well as the characters…even the callsigns…we used in our pc user name…snakedoc..dirtdiver…coolbreeze…redcap…hammer_ head…betty_blue…dog_patch. we we’re shocked when I heard that CBS canceled this show…my wife was so sad…coz the love story of couples (jonas&molly, bob&kim, mack&tiffy)…not yet done. this series not only in war and tactics but it’s family bonding stories too. SEASON 5 pls come out!!!! CBS pleaseeeeee!
I am in 29 and my wife is 30. I’m a veteran and The Unit is the most accurate show to the military that I have seen. I love the show and feel that the slot that it was placed in on Sunday during football season killed its ratings. Many people watch it on DVR. During football season the show is pushed back anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes back and some people miss the show. It gets frustrating trying to keep up with when it comes on. This is the only show that I would watch on CBS. Please… Read more »
Tony, you are so right! I set my DVR to record 10 minutes early and as long as one hour later just so that I didn’t miss it the show!!!! Stupid football. LOL
please bring this back… this show is awesome… great cast/characters/stories and drama!
55 is bs for an average age – I am 31, and most of my friends are 30’s
I live in Australia and S4 just finished here, so pretty please CBS bring it back!
My wife and I are in our 20’s and we think the show isn’t the best ever, but it’s certainly one of the only worthy things to watch.
MY HUSBAND AND MYSELF(WE ARE IN OUR 40’S) ARE HUGE FANS OF THE UNIT, I DON’T BELIEVE IT GOT CANCELED, WE ARE SO TIRED OF HAVING ONLY THE OPTIONS OF NOT SO GOOD SERIES/REALITY SHOWS ON T V, PLEASE CBS GET IT ON THE AIR AGAIN!!!
Come On CBS bring back The Unit. . . I realy love this movie and I want and hope you will reconsider and put the show back on the air. Bring it BACK!… Bring it BACK!… Bring it BACK!… Bring it BACK!… Bring it BACK!… Bring it BACK!…
Come On CBS give the public what they want, More Unit .
this show was great and is a great loss to not have returned. many of my friends still in the military belive it is one of the best show here was. really wish it would return.
I can not believe a show as well written, directed and performed as The Unit has been canceled. It is an absolute shame. Hopefully there will be enough folks pushing for it’s return that CBS or better yet FOX will pick it up. It would be the perfect lead in for ’24’.
It saddens me that yet another network is cancelling a great show. Because of work I don’t get a chance to watch a lot of T.V. which with all the reality grap on, I’m not missing much. But CBS is making a great misstake. I stopped watching Ghost Whisperer as soon as they, “Jumped The Shark”, by killing off Jim only to bring him back in the body of another man. When will networks listen to the viewers instead of the idiots in suits and give US, The Viewer the programs that “WE” want. Bring back The Unit.
I wonder why they kept loosing viewers. The only part I really didn’t like about the show was the cheating wife part of the show. Although it does happen I think it’s still a small part of life that doesn’t need air time.
My husband and I love this show and hope that it will come back. We are trying to buy all the season so that we can watch them whenever we want and hope you will reconsider and put the show back on the air.
Is there a bigger picture that I don’t understand? Unlike the “Reality/Competition Reality/Celebrity Reality/Scripted Reality/All Crap shows-Etc.”- what else does American Television offer. Most of the ideas and content we get to see are actually stolen from the UK. Have we really lost all of the creativity that made this country great. AND for the writers of The Unit that had enough thought to remember what make this country great, threw in a stroy line and had it aired into several not-so-unbelievable episodes that hopefully keep our country remembering the same. I am truly disappointed in the decision. Unfortunately, I… Read more »
I was in the military for a while and am now a disabled vetern and I miss the military and when me and my wife started watching the unit it gave me the feeling of being with my friends and the commraderie that went with the show along with the loss of some of the characters you follow along with the ups and downs of the situations on the show. Yes The Unit should still be going because my wife and I love the show we just started watching season 1 again.
I first heard of The Unit through a friend and am now instantly hooked have watched the 1st 3 season in a matter of a month an im loving it, the characters the plots everything about it has me hooked. I really do hope that they carry on with the show, ive recommended this to a few of my friends and they to are hooked, i think what the problem is, is that i dont think its on here in the UK on the main channels hence not many people watch it so far ive managed to get i think… Read more »
