Last night, ABC’s The Unusuals debuted in the post-Lost timeslot. The network’s had high hopes for the quirky crime drama but many critics have deemed it to be “usual” fare at best. What do viewers think?
The Unusuals revolves around a unique group NYPD detectives that all have secrets. They also have twisted senses of humor, which is helpful since every day could be their last. The series stars several TV show veterans like Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Adam Goldberg (Head Cases), Harold Perrineau (Oz), and Terry Kinney (thirtysomething), as well as Jeremy Renner, Kai Lennox, Josh Close, and Monique Gabriela Curnen.
Last night, the Unusuals premiere attracted 6.84 million viewers and a 2.2/6 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. That’s better than last week’s Life on Mars finale in overall viewers (5.86 million) but it’s essentially the same rating/share in the demo. These aren’t the numbers that ABC was hoping for.
On top of that, there was a significant drop off midway through the episode. There were 7.44 million watching when the episode began and by 10:30, 1.19 million had dropped off. That’s not a good indication that those people will return next week.
Considering that a premiere typically represents a show’s best numbers, none of this is a very good sign for the show’s future.
Did you watch the show and if so, will you be back for more? Worth keeping or time to let it go already?

I cannot believe ABC cancelled this show. There is never anything good to watch anymore, so to finally get hooked on a great show like this and then have it get cancelled is terrible. A very bad move by ABC. Is there ANY way to get it back????
One of the best new shows to come out in years. Cannot believe that it has been cancelled. When we have real talent, fabulous writing and over the top humor, how can the public not recognize how really good this show is. I am so disappointed to lose it. Reality TV is NOT the way to go, so very silly.
The Unusuals is funny, insightful, and addictive; a cross between Barney Miller and Hill Street Blues, right down to having the jail cell right in the office next to the policeman’s desks. I’m still getting the word out for my friends and family to tune in and it gets the ax? What is ABC thinking?? Remember ages ago when Monk premiered on ABC to be exact, it was quickly cancelled, but thankfully went on to become a cable cult classic. The Unusuals is a thoughtful, creative hour of quirky detective stories. I have frankly gotten quite attached to the characters… Read more »
The Unusuals simply has heart. It emits a “real” feeling like you already know the characters, and how long does it take to have that with most new shows? It draws you in like the “Law” part in Law & Order and continues with great twists and turns.
I really love this show. I’m really tired of all the reality shows they keep that are so stupid & embarassing. This show is witty, funny, & I love that there is not a lot of blood & guts on the crime scene like so many other shows. I think the character are great. I can’t wait to watch every week to see what is going to happen with them next. Please don’t let them take this show off the air. I would really miss it.
I have seen a lot of great shows canceled before they had time to draw an audience, but canceling this one is probably the worst mistake of all of them. This show instantly hooks viewers with its in depth character development and its distinctively charming personality, and I would be willing to bet a lot of money that if it were allowed to stick around long enough, it would easily maintain a huge loyal fan base for many seasons to come. If this show had come out in 2003 or 2004 when the HDTV market enticed people to watch network… Read more »
Keep the show, I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
i think the show is great. amber tamblin is fantastic in her role and her partner and her mix well together i think abc is making a hugh mistake taking this show off .i used to be a csi:new york fan till this show came on then i started watching this show. if it does not comeback then abc will lose another viewer and back to csi:new york i go.
They did it again… fing idiots. I don’t think I will watch any show until it has at least three seasons under its belt. Every time something good comes on, they cancel it. If it is a good show (and this one was very, very good…) give it some time and word of mouth will build an audience… Instant gratification is not a successful business model.
KEEP IT! Please! The show is great.
Please being it back! We love it!
This is the best show on ABC! The writing is wonderful, intelligent, quirky, great acting! It would be a huge mistake to not bring back this show.
The show is refreshingly different from the usual cop dramas. This has a good balance. The characters are quirky and interesting. KEEP IT!
Great show, the actors portrayed the characters superbly. The writers appealed to a mature audience, please bring it back next season.
KEEP IT>>>>>>the brainiacs at the networks are so inept they should be running AIG …It is a GREAT show ..give it a chance and advertise it on the network instead of these retarded reality ,contestant shows
