Last night, ABC’s The Unusuals debuted in the post-Lost timeslot. The network’s had high hopes for the quirky crime drama but many critics have deemed it to be “usual” fare at best. What do viewers think?
The Unusuals revolves around a unique group NYPD detectives that all have secrets. They also have twisted senses of humor, which is helpful since every day could be their last. The series stars several TV show veterans like Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Adam Goldberg (Head Cases), Harold Perrineau (Oz), and Terry Kinney (thirtysomething), as well as Jeremy Renner, Kai Lennox, Josh Close, and Monique Gabriela Curnen.
Last night, the Unusuals premiere attracted 6.84 million viewers and a 2.2/6 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. That’s better than last week’s Life on Mars finale in overall viewers (5.86 million) but it’s essentially the same rating/share in the demo. These aren’t the numbers that ABC was hoping for.
On top of that, there was a significant drop off midway through the episode. There were 7.44 million watching when the episode began and by 10:30, 1.19 million had dropped off. That’s not a good indication that those people will return next week.
Considering that a premiere typically represents a show’s best numbers, none of this is a very good sign for the show’s future.
Did you watch the show and if so, will you be back for more? Worth keeping or time to let it go already?

Keep it.Give it a shot.If it doesn’t work after a while, cancel it and move on.But you have to give this show a chance-some shows are late bloomers-maybe “The Unusuals” fits that category.
I thought the characters were interesting and the story intriguing, even if a little too comical at times, but if the show can find the right balance between comedy and drama, I think it will be good. Worth at least another look.
People, it’s time to wake up and realize we need shows like this to stand out amongst the crowd of well-known shows just for variety’s sake. If networks don’t allow the show to grow on viewers and decide at the last moment when ratings start to surge, then the end result would be hours of non-stop reality TV shows all day long. Hopefully, that won’t happen but if it does, what’s the point of having HD TV if THERE”S NOTHING WORTH WATCHING ON IT?!?!?!?!?!?! Goodness, what happened? It’s like viewers have poor tastes these days. And “Watchmen” sadly underperformed at… Read more »
My gradson and I enjoyed the show, we were, missing Mars, so we watched together, usually record shows in that time slot. Its is a shame these reality shows are taking over, and all the good dramas are dying off.
I thought th show was pretty good. do the executives realize. most people tape thing s and watch later. there is not one show that I watch when it is on. I always dvr everthing and watch later. most of the people I know do the same thing. are those numbers in there. probably not. most people dvr so they can get through commercials. serious I am done watching anything on ABC just lost and that will be over soon enough. I will not try any show on ABC again. I am all set wwith them. cancel all the shows… Read more »
no surprise if this show gets cancelled. i mean sara conners chronicles being cancelled, medium being cancelled, fringe, eleventh hour and reaper. intelligent shows cancelled. i think iqs in this country have dropped if shows like bachelor, and american idol are the top rated shows. dancing with the stars? pleez. i guess its time to stop watching tv shows because the ones i enjoy are continually cancelled. why support the networks when they insult my intelligence by keeping garbage on and cancelling quality shows
loved the show. Will definitely watch it every week. We have a dvr so we will either tape or watch it live. Some great actors.
Or Maybe everyone IS MOURNING THE LOSS OF LIFE ON MARS???? YEA THINK!
it may be a little low in the numbers starting out but give it a chance…i’ve been waiting for months for the pilot and i wasn’t disappointed…its got a great group of actors and i’d like to see more
Figure that it’s 10pm to begin with and people are ready for bed….add to that the fact that people are mentally exhausted after watching Lost …pass-out city. Whatever’s on after Lost at 10pm is a “Lost” cause. No one’s watching. It’s not the show. It’s the schedule. Plus any cop show up against CSI and Law & Order is gonna come in 3rd unless one of the others is a repeat.
This show isn’t too bad, but there’s a lot of people still bitter over Life on Mars getting canceled who won’t be watching this. As a show it’s clever but not as intriguing and charismatic as Life on Mars. Without actually comparing it to anything, it still wasn’t exceptional. I hate to say it, but with the numbers this got and if it continues to slide, it’s gonna be canceled much sooner than LoM was (LoM shouldn’t really have been canceled in the first place.) But if anything, it will teach ABC a hard lesson about torquing off audiences by… Read more »
Wow, the realism. Just like real NYPD Detectives. Except for….everything. What garbage. At lease Life on Mars was a purposeful escape from reality. This is just same feces, different flies.
THEY TOOK LIFE ON MARS OFF FOR THIS???? YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME! As far as comments on the show–so so. Amber Tamblyn as a hard nails detctive? Who’s in charge of casting? I keep expecting “God” to pop up and give her advice, lol. It’s an OK show, but, it’s not “unusual” it’s just like all the cop shows that have come before. Ever notice how there’s always a rookie that comes from a wealthy family, but doesn’t want anyone to know, so they wont be “treated differently?” Same thing is going on on “southland,” which while still all… Read more »
I really liked the Unusuals and will definitely be tuning in every week. Hopefully it is not canceled…but that is my luck…I start to like a new show and they already give it the boot. I sure hope I am wrong this time!
liked it…bring it back
