Back in December of 2016, WGN America cancelled its fantasy drama, Salem, after three seasons. General Manager Matt Cherniss later said it had run its course and told the story it was meant to tell. Will the Underground TV show perform better or last as long or even longer? Cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.
Set in 1850s Georgia, Underground stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Jessica De Gouw, Alano Miller, and Christopher Meloni. The WGN America cast also includes Christopher Backus, Marc Blucas, Reed Diamond, James Lafferty, Amirah Vann, Bokeem Woodbine, Aisha Hinds, Jasika Nicole, Michael Trotter, Jesse Luken, Sadie Stratton, and Robert Christopher Riley. In the second season, John Legend will guest star as abolitionist Frederick Douglass. A historical drama, Underground follows the heroes of the Underground Railroad who harnessed every bit of their wits, strength, and grit in order to escape slavery and live as free men and women.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The first season of Underground averaged a 0.32 rating in the 18-49 year old viewer demographic and 993,000 viewers.
What do you think? Do you like the Underground TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a third season on WGN America?
5/30/17 update: WGN America has cancelled Underground. Details here.
No Underground shouls stay, its one of the only good show on TV.
Please keep this show on the air, its a staple in my home on wensday night. I love this show.
I am stunned, once again that Underground (Salem) would be subject to cancellation. Both of the shows were well acted with intelligent writing. Please keep this show or at least make it possible for some other network to give this show a chance.
PLEASE KEEP THIS SHOW, It’s one of the best shows that depict BLACKS in a positive light and it includes some history.
How does it depict us in a positive light-it’s a slave narrative?! Well, anyway, it was still a good show.
What QUAC means, Corduroy, is that the black characters are portrayed with positive characteristics – integrity, tenacity, wisdom, etc.
Good behavior was renewed with a 0.19. SYFY renews show with ratings worse than this all the time.
Sharknado series
Sharknado series were tv films on the channel, not a tv series. Unless I’m mistaken, which I don’t think I am in this. I suspect it’s that ratings for Underground had dipped down so low from it’s initial 1.1 million person viewership in season 1 to 400,000 by this end of the 2nd season. I don’t know. I see Andrive Dice Clay and his 190,000 viewers got renewed for another season on Showtime. Maybe it’s the networks and many things that factor into a show getting axed or not. I see so many awesome shows just get wiped out. Sense8… Read more »
I feel the show should continue on at least until the point emancipation. It’s an fantastically written story line with amazing actors who bring it to life. #UndergroundSeason3
Excellent show! Excellent acting!Excellent writers! The adrenaline running heart-thumping show also have a lot of great history lessons. It would be a disservice to cancel this show!
Underground is my favorite television show. I love the story line and the acting. I have been watching since season 1 and am still watching. Please let Underground return for season 3.
I look forward to seeing the show every week it is enjoyable and most informative
Please renew this show. It has been the highlight of television watching for my family and I. We finally get to see a different side of a horrible event.
The ratings aren’t good. However, Good Behavior was renewed with the same ratings. Many shows on SYFY were renewed with WORSE ratings. Nothing would surprise me.
“UNDERGROUND” Is the best series on tv. The entire cast is phenomenal. Director, Anthony Hemingway is great! (The Wire. Treme. Redtails) Misha Green, show’s creator, has a goldmine with this series. This story needs to be told because it’s not being told and the younger generations need this. I’m 53 years old, and I need this. After ep6 of season 2 featuring Aisha Hinds carrying an entire ep alone, I watch the recording every day. WGN would be smart to keep this series. I’m a forever fan and my Wednesdays belong to #Underground. Phyllis. New Orleans.
Yessss Ms Phyllis I definitely concur, you hit it right on the head Underground is phenomenal. I’m stuck Wednesday nights to this series, I’m on the edge of the couch with anticipation of what’s about to happen…I would hope that WGN would keep this show on for years to come…
Sincerely, Isyss Leea
A loyal Underground Fan
The acting is great. America need shows like this. The history need to be preserved. Better than reality shows that are fake and violent.
I agree 100% with everything that you just posted. I emailed WGN and basically stated that it would be a mistake to cancel this show, and to to please consider the return of “The Outsiders”. There is a market out there for quality television and storytelling, and WGN was willing to be that station that reached out to those particular viewers. For some reason, it has become about ratings and money, and less about great acting and storytelling.
The ratings drop from the first episode of season #2 to the second episode of season #2 is huge. I wonder if it has anything to do with the major character death in the season premiere.
Love this show #,yes keep it on TV best show on
Yessss Tamika I totally agree “the best show”
Maybe they can find another network to continue it on. I haven’t heard anything yet though. the ratings were pretty dismal at 400,000, but the way people talk about Underground, it would seem like ratings would be higher, you know? I think if it was on another network like OWN or NBC, it could’ve faired better but who knows. I don’t know.
