As you may have heard, How to Be a Gentleman received mostly negative reviews. While many critics like the actors, few liked the script the script. After last night, it seems the viewers don’t seem to be all that crazy about it either.
Per the fast affiliate numbers, How to Be a Gentleman attracted a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.96 million viewers. It was in second place for the timeslot, well below The X Factor on FOX.
While a 2.7 isn’t a terrible number on its own, the new CBS sitcom lost 44% of the demo audience from lead-in The Big Bang Theory. What’s more, when compared to last season’s premiere of $#*! My Dad Says, the network was down 32% in the demo and 29% in total viewers.
The entire season of $#*! My Dad Says averaged a 3.0 demo rating and ended up being cancelled so, unless Gentleman improves, this level of numbers isn’t going to cut it.
NOTE: Season ratings and averages for this series are now available.
What do you think? Did you tune in? Will you watch again? What’s your gut instinct? Will it end up getting renewed for a second season or cancelled?

I liked it better than I would have expected. I don’t like “meatball” characters like the one played by Kevin Dillon because they’re pretty one-dimensional, but I enjoyed the other characters enough to tolerate him. I’m surprised it didn’t do better with the BBT lead-in, because they’re both in that “nerd-humor” vein. I found it to be rather “Frasier”-esque, and see potential in it… but apparently I’m in the minority. Oh, well…
Didn’t see much to enjoy of this show. It’s off my list of must see.
This show doesn’t deserve to be on CBS. I expect a lot more from the top network when it comes to its shows.
I loved this show! i loved the cast! I can’t wait to see where they take it and I hope word of mouth swells. It’s a great show with an unparalleled cast. Everyone is so strong. I think there’s a lot of great potential. Dillon reminded me a lot of his Brothers performance in something About Mary. I think he’s got some great comedic chops and I think he’s got great chemistry with the lead, Hornsby.
I’m really excited to see where it goes. Most pilots are slow and clumsy, that’s to be expected. it’s unfortunate that in today’s ADD Twitter Fed mentality, we don’t give things time. I remember that Big Bang Theory’s Pilot got roasted. the critics hated it and it’s a huge success now. So hopefully America will be right again on this one!
I can’t wait to see what they do next Thurs!!!!
I enjoyed it as well! I remember him as “The Hutch” on Joe Schmoe, and I loved this guy!
I really enjoy the show It was great all CBs need is to give more chance to it and dont think just about canseling the show …Im sure It will improve…and became one of the best show…
____ My Dad Says was a great show, and really should not have been canceled. That being said (As I think that is one reason that viewership is down so far) I think How to Be A Gentleman is a show that has promise. It didn’t knock it completely out of the park, but if they ever decide to give this show a chance, It could develop into something really great. Of course nobody ever allows that to happen, so I am afraid that this show is doomed, but in my opinion the show should be given a chance to morph into what could be a true comedy classic.
