It looks like Cristela Hernandez has a bright future ahead of her — unfortunately the same can’t be said for the Cristela TV show. ABC has cancelled the sitcom after one season of 22 episodes.
On Cristela, a young Mexican-American woman (Cristela Alonzo) works to become an attorney while juggling her responsibilities to her traditional family. The rest of the cast includes Maria Canals-Barrera, Carlos Ponce, Terri Hoyos, Gabriel Iglesias, Sam McMurray, Justine Lupe, and Andrew Leeds.
The sitcom debuted in October 2015 and attracted a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.5 million viewers. That was a decent start for a Friday night show but the ratings lost quite a bit of steam over the course of the season, falling as low as a 0.8 demo rating with 4.1 million viewers.
Those numbers weren’t good enough to mandate a second season so ABC has decided to cancel Cristela instead. The final episode aired on April 17th.
What do you think? Did you like the Cristela TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed? Why do you think it didn’t attract a bigger audience?
Cristela was a great show, and it was just gaining some traction. Friday nights is a hard time slot, too, so the fact that she completed a full season is still an accomplishment. I agree with all the comments about the positive aspects of the show and what it represented. I don’t even watch network TV anymore, but I would watch that show, and only that show. Cristella, if you can read this, don’t stay with ABC if they don’t come to their senses and renew. Take this to Netflix or somebody else. You need to keep producing this show.… Read more »
I think that it if Cristela had a bright future ahead of her that ABC should make another season to show her reaching her goals with her family. The family on Cristela acted as a really family that most ABC shows don’t have. Like Scandal. PLEASE bring back Cristela.
I really loved this show. So sad that no matter how well Latinos do, the networks always find reasons to cancel our shows. How hard do we have to work? Cristela keep up the fight. You are so talented that you can’t help but succeed. We must be a threat to other talent out there because Hollywood continues to hold us back. TOO BAD.
I just now learned Cristela was amongst the new shows that didn’t make the freshman cut. I actually loved the show. The entire show, like its cast, was dynamic and funny.
Maybe, instead of it being a fall-spring season show, it could’ve been a summer season show. [Unfortunately, it did compete against “Cold Justice” and “Undercover Boss,” and that’s if it’s just solely a viewability ratings problem.] Either that, or, it can be picked up by other networks, like TBS, OWN, or WeTV that can appreciate it as a megahit; just not totally lost as a 1-season wonder…:-(
I thought Cristela was a positive role model not only for Mexican -Americans like myself but, also for young women who are over weight. I think it was about time we had a positive program with and about Mexican-Americans. Was this also a race issue to cancel the show?? Let’s look around and see who has more TV programs our there. Cristela showed a lot of Mexican American issues and values. We need to programs out there showing our culture and our progress not just the “bad” part!! I hope you reconsider and give us Mexican Americans a break on… Read more »
I wish you would reconsider your decision and give Cristela an another chance. This show was a positive role for Hispanic. At this present time we do not have show to represent us on television. But yet there are show of other races who seem to get more show series and time.
I was greatly disappointed when I hear the news, please reconsider it and give the show another chance.
Thank You
This was a big mistake I am tired of seeing the same famlies on ABC and cristela was very relatable I felt a connection with her. Her sarcasm and wit was perfect. This show was also very clean and perfect for the family. We need more Latinos on tv!
Please put it back on. This is my best show I ever saw. And its very funny. Who cares about ratings. It’s show thats count. I was wait for the show every Friday comes. Please ABC put it back on for me. Every time sunday- Thursday cames there nothing to watch. Every Friday come my best show comes on. Thank you.Rebecca Marez. I love Cristela
Hopefully some smart network like Fox will pick up the show . It’s a great show about a real family not a bunch of psycho drama infested people trying to act like a family
are you kidding me? It was one of the best shows of 2014-2015!
Cristela was one of the better sitcoms on tv, and you cancelled it?? Why?? Cristella Hernandez brought something fresh and funny into the homes of millions every week. She reaches a part of AMERICA that a lot of AMERICANS forget about. I seriously think ratings had nothing to do with why this show isn’t coming back for a second season. I think the reasons behind why it got cancelled are more racially and and politically charged than anything else. Big mistake ABC, big mistake, huge!!
I agree 150% —- You said it perfectly Cynthia!
I so agree with you Cynthia. Seems like the networks keep putting Mexicans and Latinos on the back burners. Let them remember we are becoming the majority. What will the do when we have the vote? Hmmmm?
I think Cristela was a great show and ABC should have gone for a second season because I think the ratings would have improved. It was funny, witty and a sitcom the entire family could watch. Bring it back ABC!!!
me and my son liked the TV show and it was one of the good show I let him see
Please bring back Cristela, I love that show!!!!!!!!!
I think Cristela was an extremely good show. I loved everything about the show. We need more shows like that on TV. Cristela brought back the old school family tv shows appeal. ABC is terribly wrong for dropping the show. They will lose a lot of viewers now with one of them being me. To the cast of Cristela I applaud you guys and the show wasn’t cancelled because of poor ratings, it was just ABC being political because they other shows on that network that truly sucks and have no rhyme or reason for still being on air.
